(07/024) Prisoner who Lost His Life in Prison…

It has been reported that Gürkan Türkoğu, a prisoner who went on a 266-day hunger strike in protest of conditions in Type Y and Type S prisons and was later taken to a hospital where he underwent forced medical intervention, lost his life on July 5, 2026, at the hospital where he was receiving treatment.

It has been reported that S.G. (28, male), a prisoner held at the Urfa T-Type Prison, lost his life on July 4, 2026. News reports claim that S.G. committed suicide.

(07/026) Interventions, Detentions, and Bans Related to NATO Summit Protests…

On July 2, 2026, police intervened in a march organized by the People’s Liberation Party (HKP) in Ankara and detained 19 people, including party officials and lawyers.

On July 4, 2026, it was reported that the Ankara Tuzluçayır branch of AKA-DER was raided by police, and seven people present at the association’s building during the raid were detained.

On July 4, 2026, at least 9 people were detained during home raids in Hatay.

On July 5, 2026, police intervened in a march organized by the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) in Ankara and detained 139 people. It was reported that at least four people were injured during the intervention.

On July 5, 2026, 61 people were detained during home raids in Izmir.

On July 5, 2026, during home raids in Ankara, 46 people were detained, including academic Sibel Özbudun and writer Temel Demirer, as well as members and leaders of political parties, unions, associations, and platforms.

On July 5, 2026, as part of an Istanbul-based investigation, 39 people—including Ezgi Önalan, President of the Istanbul Branch of the Association of Contemporary Lawyers (ÇHD), and branch member Yunusemre Işık—were detained in operations carried out across eight provinces.

On July 5, 2026, 12 people were detained during home raids in Adana.

On July 5, 2026, in Izmir, five members of the Free University Movement were detained following a general identity check conducted on the road. They were heading to a protest in Ankara.

According to news reports on July 5, 2026, it was learned that four people (Ümit Deniz, Yusuf İzzettin Can, Emine Esmer, and Bedirhan Oğuz) who were detained in Adana on the grounds that they were distributing leaflets were released by the magistrate’s court under house arrest.

On July 5, 2026, during home raids in Kocaeli, five people—including members and officials of a political party—were detained.

On July 5, 2026, during home raids in Urfa, EMEP Provincial Chair Can Güleç and provincial official Cemalettin Özden were detained.

On July 5, 2026, 11 members of the Resistance Tent were detained during home raids conducted in five provinces. It was reported that a decision was issued restricting lawyer visits for 24 hours in connection with the investigations.

On July 5, 2026, T24 foreign news editor Buse Söğütlü, Bianet reporter Abbas Vural, and Odatv editor Ceren Erdoğdu were detained.

(07/028) Journalist Detained in Şırnak…

Journalist Berfin Ay was detained on July 5, 2026, during a road checkpoint at the entrance to the Cizre district of Şırnak. The reason for the detention could not be determined.

(07/029) Trial in Istanbul Involving Journalists, Lawyers, and ESP Members…

The trial of 23 individuals—including lawyers Sezin Uçar, Özlem Gümüştaş, Gülhan Kaya, and Ali Haydar Doğan from the Law Office of the Oppressed; İsminaz Temel, news director of the Etkin News Agency (ETHA); reporter Havva Cuştan; and members and executives of the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP)—continued on July 6, 2026, at the Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 27. The indictment seeks to punish the 23 individuals for the crimes of “being a member of an organization” and “spreading organizational propaganda.” The court adjourned the hearing until December 8, 2026.

(07/030) Journalist and Others on Trial in Istanbul…

23 people, including journalist Zişan Gür, were detained after police used physical force during a protest on March 23, 2025, in ’s Fatih district, where police used physical force to detain participants.The final hearing in the case filed at the Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance No. 26 against the 66 individuals took place on July 3, 2026. The court acquitted all 66 individuals of the charge of “violating Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations.”

Of the 66 people detained, 26 were remanded in custody by the magistrate’s court to which they were referred on March 26, 2026, while 40 were released under judicial supervision. The 26 who had been remanded in custody were released on April 10, 2025, following the acceptance of the indictment filed against them and a decision to release them on bail.

(07/031) The Trial of Comedian in Istanbul…

The trial of comedian Tuba Ulu, which was initiated at the Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance No. 13 on the grounds of a joke she made about Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent during a performance, began on July 6, 2026. The indictment seeks to punish Tuba Ulu for the crime of “inciting the public to hatred and hostility.” The court adjourned the hearing until July 14, 2026.

Onur Yiğit, the mayor of the Balçova district of İzmir, who was released on June 30, 2026, under house arrest, was removed from office by the Ministry of the Interior on July 3, 2026.

(07/033) Districts in Istanbul Where Protests and Events Are Banned…

According to news reports on July 3, 2026, the Şişli District Governor’s Office in Istanbul banned all events—both indoor and outdoor—within the district’s borders for one day, on the grounds of calls for protests over the arrest of comedian Deniz Göktaş.

The Kadıköy District Governor’s Office also banned, for the same reason, gatherings, press conferences, vehicle blockades, rallies, events, marches, sit-ins, human chains, and similar actions and events within the district’s borders for two days, from 8:00 a.m. on July 4, 2026, to 11:59 p.m. on July 5, 2026.

(07/034) Event Canceled in Istanbul…

According to news reports on July 3, 2026, an event planned at Maçka Park in Istanbul’s Şişli district regarding the arrest of comedian Deniz Göktaş was canceled following the district governor’s office’s ban.

(07/035) Social Media Accounts Blocked…

According to news reports on July 4, 2026, it was learned that access to the X social media account belonging to Halkevleri had been blocked.

According to news reports on July 4, 2026, it was learned that access to the X social media account belonging to Sol Haber was blocked on the grounds of protecting national security and public order.

According to news reports on July 4, 2026, it was learned that the website of Nupel Haber—which had ceased operations—was blocked by a decision of the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) on the grounds of protecting national security and public order.

According to news reports on July 4, 2026, it was learned that the website of the news platform “Özgürüz,” along with its social media accounts on X, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube, had been blocked pursuant to a July 3, 2026, decision by the Ankara 10th Criminal Court of Peace, citing the need to protect national security and public order.

According to news reports published on July 5, 2026, the Instagram account of “Genç Hayat,” a supplement to the Evrensel newspaper, was blocked at the request of the Information and Communications Technologies Authority (BTK).

According to news reports published on July 5, 2026, the X account belonging to the “Marxist Thought Communities” was blocked.

According to news reports published on July 6, 2026, it was learned that the website https://devrim.org.tr/, belonging to the Revolutionary Party, was blocked at the request of the BTK.

According to news reports on July 6, 2026, it was learned that access to the Instagram social media account belonging to Sendika.Org was blocked on the grounds of protecting national security and public order.
