It is learned that 1 soldier died and 5 soldiers got wounded due to roll-over of an armoured military vehicle in Aralık district of Iğdır on December 25, 2018.

(12/327) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of December 25, 2018 that Mustafa Özgür Mulla, a prisoner in Silivri Prison No 6, was subjected to physical violence of wardens on December 18, 2018. It is reported that an official complaint was made to the prosecutor’s office.

(12/328) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 777 days to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on December 25, 2018 at 13.30 and detained 3 people (Nazan Bozkurt, Mahmut Konuk and Gülnaz Bozkurt). It is learned that 3 people were released on the same day.

(12/329) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Istanbul…

Türkan Albayrak, who was dismissed from her job at Sarıyer district Health Department, on the grounds of ‘personnel security investigation’ and ‘archive search’, on August 3, 2018; made a press declaration to regain her job on December 25, 2018 and attempted for a sit-in protest in front of Health Department. The police intervened into the sit-in and detained Türkan Albayrak. It is learned that Türkan Albayrak was released the same day. It is the 65th time of detention of Türkan Albayrak.

On December 25, 2018, lawyer Didem Baydar Ünsal who was on “Watch for Solidarity with Arrested Lawyers” outside of Çağlayan Courthouse in Istanbul is detained.

People’s Law Office announced that lawyer Didem Baydar Ünsal was taken to Çağlayan Police Station and was not allowed to meet lawyers visiting her.

10 people (People’s Democratic Party (HDP) former MP Kıznaz Türkeli; Iğdır co-mayor Şaziye Önder who was suspended; Tuzluca district co-mayor Mehmet Gültekin; Oya Malgaz and Vedat Yılmaz, former provincial co-chairs of HDP; Kadir Özsular, Adem Kartal, Zübeyde Kaynar, Ayşe Bağış, Cesim Katar) who were detained on December 18, 2018 in Iğdır, are referred to the court on December 25, 2018. 3 people (Cesim Katar, Adem Kartal and Vedat Yılmaz) are arrested on ‘being an illegal organisation member’, and 7 people are released.

Ali Haydar Ben, chair of Federation of Dersim Associations (DEDEF) is detained in a house raid in Istanbul on December 25, 2018. The reason of detention is unknown due to confidentiality order on the case.

(12/333) Detained Newspaper Employee in Istanbul…

8 of 11 people including Tuba Bulut, an employee of Yeni Yaşam newspaper, who were detained on December 22, 2018; are arrested by the court on December 25, 2018. 3 people are released on judicial control conditions. The names of arrested people are: Tuba Bulut, Mehmet Acun, Nurten Gündüm, Osman Beğbağa, Ercan Ekinci, Şahin Özyıldırım, Rodi Bozyel and Ömer Taşkıran.

On December 25, 2018, 6 people are detained for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’, in house raids in Izmir.

(12/335) ESP Chair on Trial…

The case against Çiçek Otlu, chair of Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP), and ESP members Ali Haydar Keleş and Bedran Çoğaltay, on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 25, is held on December 25, 2018. After defence hearings the court decided to continue detention for 3 people and adjourned the trial to March 14, 2019.

The separate cases against 12 academicians (Professor Mesut Yeğen from Istanbul Şehir University; Zeyno Pekünlü from Kültür University; PhD student B.U.T. from Toronto University; Assoc. Professor K.Ç., Assist. Professor Bülent Somay and Research Assistant Belin Benezra from Bilgi University; Reyhan Tutumlu from Sabancı University; Özge Özay from American University; Professor Murat Cemal Yalçıntan and Assoc. Professor B.Ş. from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University; Professor Fikret Uyar from Dicle University, Assist. Professor Filiz Arıöz from Marmara University) for signing the petition “We will not be a party to this crime!” on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 37 for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ are held on December 25, 2018. The court adjourned the trials of 4 cases to April 11, 2019; of 3 cases to February 27, 2019; of 1 trial to March 13, 2019; of 3 cases to March 14, 2019; and of 1 case to June 11, 2019.

The case against Research Assistant D.Ü. from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University for the same reason on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 28 is held on December 25, 2018. The court sentenced D.Ü. to 1 year and 3 months for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ and deferred the announcement of the verdict.

The case against 2 academicians (Assist. Professor Berke Özenç from Turkish-German University and Assist. Professor Yıldız Silier from Boğaziçi University) for the same reason on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 29 is held on December 25, 2018. The court adjourned one trial to April 11, 2019 and 1 trial to April 4, 2019.

(12/337) Police Officers on Trial for Death of 2 Children Due to Run Over of a Police Armoured Vehicle…

On May 3, 2017, Muhammed Yıldırım (7) and Furkan Yıldırım (6) died because a police armoured vehicle destroyed the wall of their house in Silopi district of Şırnak. The case on death of 2 children, against Ömer Yeğit, driver of the armoured vehicle and Murat Maden, the police chief who charged Ömer Yeğit, on Cizre Heavy Penal Court No 2 is held on December 25, 2018.

The indictment demands jail penalty between 2 and 15 years for 2 defendants for ‘killing of more than one person by gross negligence’.

The court adjourned the trial to February 14, 2019.

The final trial of the case against Hasan Demir, former member of Council of State, who was dismissed by a state of emergency decree, is held on December 25, 2018 on Penal Department No 9 of The Supreme Court. The court sentenced the defendant to 7 years and 6 months for ‘being an illegal organisation member’.
