(04/124) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in a Removal Center…

According to the news coverage of April 19, 2024, a petition signed by 52 refugees in Döşemealtı Removal Center (GGM) in Antalya states that refugees held in GGM are subjected to verbal and physical violence by GGM staff and security guards, It is learned that refugees were subjected to torture and ill-treatment in a room called ‘white room’ and GGM staff and security guards threatened to take refugees to this room, one person was taken to the white room and left without food and water for a day, the food given to refugees in GGM was inadequate and of poor quality, and refugees who started a hunger strike were forced to eat.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 19, 2024, that one of the refugees in Döşemealtı GGM in Antalya, whose blood sugar level decreased, was denied sugar; and that refugees with health problems were not referred to hospitals for medical check-ups, and were prevented from going to hospitals; and that they could not get medical reports documenting torture and ill-treatment they were subjected to.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 19, 2024, that 52 refugees went on a hunger strike in Döşemealtı GGM in Antalya due to the violations they were subjected to.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 19, 2024, that Delil Ufak, a prisoner in Burdur High Security Prison, was kept in a single ward with 2 other prisoners; and that television, refrigerator, and eating utensils such as plates and forks were seized.

(04/128) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan not Responded to…

It is learned that the appeal made April 19, 2024, to the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s family and tutelary along with the families and tutelary of Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded to.

8 people who were detained on the allegations of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ during house raids in the Gaziosmanpaşa district of Istanbul on April 16, 2024, were released on April 19, 2024.

(04/130) Person Under Investigation…

It is learned from the news coverage of April 19, 2024, that Şırnak Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against Süleyman Salğucak, on the grounds of ‘opposing election law’ and ‘preventing voters from voting’, on the grounds of saying ‘Speak, where are you from’ to voters who were soldiers and police officers in Şırnak during the elections held on March 31, 2024; and that Süleyman Salğucak gave his official statement at Şırnak Security Directorate.

(04/131) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The first hearing of the lawsuit filed against journalist Furkan Karabay upon the complaint of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s former lawyer, based on a social media post he made, was held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 5 on April 18, 2024. The indictment demands a sentence for the journalist on the charges of ‘insult’ and ‘slander’. The court adjourned the hearing to November 5, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 18, 2024, that upon the complaint of the Governorate of Erzincan, the Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against journalist Duygu Kıt, on the grounds of ‘publicly disseminating misleading information’ and ‘slander’, for her news reports on a quarry project to be built on pasture lands in Ergan, a rural neighborhood of central district of Erzincan, and that the journalist gave her official statement in this regard.

(04/133) The Case of Dedeoğulları…

On May 19, 2024, the final trial of the case was held at Konya Heavy Penal Court No 8, after the verdicts against 9 people in the case about the racist attack against members of the Dedeoğulları family in Konya on May 12, 2021, in which 7 people were wounded, was reversed by Penal Department No 1 of Konya Regional Court of Appeals on the grounds of “incomplete sentences based on inadequate reports and documents that do not constitute evidence”. The court rejected the discovery request and acquitted all defendants on the charge of ‘violation of residential inviolability’, acquitted 5 defendants on the charge of ‘armed threat’, sentenced 6 defendants to jail penalties ranging from 1 year 7 months and 20 days to 5 years 3 months and 22 days for ‘intentional injury’ and deferred the announcement of the verdict for 4 defendants. The court also decided to continue judicial control measures on 7 defendants, to lift judicial control measures on 1 defendant and rejected the demand for arrest of the defendants.

(04/134) Person on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against Halise Aksoy, who was arrested on April 25, 2023, on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’, continued on April 19, 2024, at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 10. The court released Halise Aksoy and adjourned the trial to September 18, 2024.

(04/135) People on Trial in Bitlis…

It is learned from the news coverage of April 19, 2024, that Bitlis Heavy Penal Court accepted the indictment against 7 people who were arrested after being detained in house raids in the Hizan and Tatvan districts of Bitlis between July 2, 2023, and November 28, 2023. The indictment demands heavy life imprisonment for 7 people on the charges of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’, ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’ and ‘abetting intentional killing by design’. The first hearing of the case will be held on June 7, 2024.

(04/136) Constitutional Court Decision on Student Demonstrations…

It is learned from the news coverage of April 19, 2024, that the Constitutional Court, which evaluated the annulment case of 132 MPs on the disciplinary penalties for ‘distributing leaflets, hanging banners or posters without permission inside a higher education institution’ and ‘organizing meetings in closed or open spaces of a higher education institution without permission of the authorities’ in the Higher Education Council (YÖK) regulation, decided to annul these regulations on the grounds that they are unconstitutional.

According to the news coverage of April 19, 2024, the Human Rights Association (IHD) Istanbul Branch and All of Us Are Migrants No to Racism Platform announced that they filed a criminal complaint against Bolu Mayor Tanju Özcan for his discriminatory statements targeting migrants and refugees.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 19, 2024 that 1 person is detained in Kayseri.
