(04/116) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of April 18, 2024, that Seda Baykan, a prisoner kept in Diyarbakır Women’s Prison, was kept in a single room and was allowed to use the right to ventilation only during working hours for 3 hours in total, was constantly woken up every hour for checking, and could not meet the prosecutor in charge of the prison for 1 year, It is learned that the prison administration did not deliver an issue of a magazine she subscribed to which was not subject to a recall warrant, that her request to buy stationery for drawing was rejected by the prison administration, and that the stationery her family sent by cargo was not delivered to her on the grounds that ‘you can only get it through the institution’.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 18, 2024, that Mehdi Boz, a prisoner in Elazığ High Security Prison No 2, had problems in access to treatment despite having many health problems including thyroid gland cancer, his check-ups every 6 months were delayed, he was not able to get his cancer medication, he was subjected to ill-treatment of correction officers and received a medical report documenting the physical violence he was subjected to.

18 people including union executives who were detained during the police intervention on April 16, 2024, against the strike of factory workers in Kemalpaşa district of Izmir on March 7, 2024, on the grounds of not getting their rights, were released on April 17, 2024, after statement procedures.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 18, 2024, that Şırnak Bar Association and Bar Association chair Rojhat Dilsiz, who took the allegation of sexual assault of a woman by a specialist sergeant in Şırnak on April 12, 2024, to judiciary, were subjected to insults and threats on social media.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 18, 2024, that Ankara Administrative Court No 5 evaluated the application of Somali citizen Mohamed Isa Abdullah, who was forced to close his restaurant in the Kızılay district of Ankara, due to systematic police raids on his restaurant between 2021 and 2022, and ruled that the police practice was based on racist prejudices and discriminated against the restaurant owner.

Mohamed Isa Abdullah applied to the Human Rights and Equality Institution of Turkey (TİHEK) about the pressure and discriminatory statements he was subjected to, and after TİHEK decided that there was no violation, he applied to the administrative court.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 17, 2024, that, a total of 3 content on https://www.sozcu.com.tr, https://www.odatv.com and https://www.takvim.com.tr related to a news report of The Sun newspaper on health tourism in Turkey was banned to access by Izmir Criminal Peace Judgeship No 1 on April 16, 2024, on the grounds of violation of personal rights.

The Ministry of Interior announced on April 18, 2024 that 60 people were detained in operations conducted in 14 provinces.
