(01/293) Torture and Ill-Treatment…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 26, 2019 that, open-door areas for prisoners in Kayseri Bünyan T Type Prison No 2, is covered by wire netting and 56 prisoners were given solitary cell penalty for protesting this.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 26, 2019 that, in Hatay Yayladağı T Type Prison, 23 prisoners are kept in wards for 18 people; prisoners are prevented from social, cultural and sports rights; prisoners are forced to stand in military order during roll-calls and otherwise are subjected to verbal and physical violence of the wardens.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 26, 2019 that in Rize Kalkandere L Type Prison, the heating in wardens do not work.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 27, 2019 that 10 prisoners on hunger strike in Tarsus T Type Prison No 1 and 2 other prisoners accompanying them were taken out of their wards and put in a ward for 5 people. It is also stated in the news reports that prisoners on hunger strike were not medically examined since the beginning of the hunger strike and vitamin B12 was not given regularly to them.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 26, 2019 2 prisoners Aziz Baday, Ersin Sönmez in Çankırı E Type Prison went on an indefinite hunger strike on January 25, 2019, demanding an end to isolation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan.

(01/295) Rejection to Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan…

It is learned that the appeal made on January 26, 2019 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s sister and brother along with the families of Hamili Yıldırım, Ömer Hayri Konar and Veysel Aktaş in order to visit, was rejected the same day on the grounds of limitations for prisoners in accordance with the Law on the Execution of Criminal and Security Measures Number 5275.

(01/296) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 810 days to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on January 25, 26, and 27, 2019 at 13.30 and 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on January 25, 2019, 2 people (Acun Karadağ and Nazan Bozkurt) and at 18.00 2 people (Gülnaz Bozkurt and Nazan Bozkurt) were detained.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on January 26, 2019, 3 people (Acun Karadağ, Nazan Bozkurt and Cemal Öksüz) and at 18.00 2 people (Alev Şahin and Nazan Bozkurt) were detained.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on January 27, 2019, 2 people (Acun Karadağ, Nazan Bozkurt) and at 18.00 4 people (Mehmet Dersulu, Alev Şahin, Nazan Bozkurt and Gülnaz Bozkurt) were detained.

Thus in total 15 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on January 25, 26, and 27, 2019. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

(01/297) Coercion to Uniforms and Reactions Against This…

The press declaration of TAYAD (Prisoner’s Families’ Solidarity Association) members attempted to be held in Sakarya Street in Ankara on January 26, 2019 against uniform coercion in prisons is prevented by the police. It is reported that 2 people (Sinan Yanbal and Bülent Özgül) were detained in police intervention.

(01/298) Police Intervention Against Saturday Mothers’ Protest in Istanbul…

Police obstructed all the streets around Galatasaray Square in Istanbul to prevent Saturday Mothers who rally every Saturday for 23 years in the same place to gather for the 722nd time on January 26, 2019. Upon police prevention, the group including People’s Democratic Party (HDP) MP’s Hüda Kaya, Oya Ersoy, Musa Piroğlu as well as representatives of political parties, human rights defenders and artists along with families of disappeared people gather in front of Human Rights Association (IHD) Istanbul office and started to march. It is reported that the police blockaded the street of IHD Istanbul office too.

(01/299) Prevention of Human Rights Defenders’ Event in Istanbul…

“F sit-in”, which is organized for the 3567h time by Human Rights Association (IHD) Istanbul Branch Prison Watch Committee, to demand release of ill prisoners, on January 26, 2019, is prevented by the police. The police obstructed all the streets around Galatasaray Square. Human rights defenders made the press declaration in front of IHD Istanbul office.

(01/300) Prevention of Peace Mother’s Event in Istanbul…

The police prevented the press declaration of Peace Mothers for Leyla Güven, People’s Democratic Party (HDP) Hakkari MP and Democratic Society Congress (DTK) co-chair to be held at Galatasaray Square on January 25, 2019. It is learned from the news reports that journalists following the press declaration were subjected to criminal record check by the police.

(01/301) Detained People in Antep for Social Media Posts…

6 of 7 people who were detained in Antep on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation on social media’, are arrested by the court on January 26, 2019. 1 person is released on judicial control conditions. The names of arrested people are unknown.

(01/302) Detained HDP Member in Diyarbakır…

It is learned that Çeko Mimkara, a member of HDP Youth Assembly, was stopped in a car in Diyarbakır on January 25, 2019; and that he was detained and was taken to Diyarbakır Police Headquarters. The reason of detention is unknown.

(01/303) Detained Local Authorities in Mardin…

10 people including local authorities who were detained on January 22, 2019, in house raids in Derik and Kızıltepe districts of Mardin, are released on January 25, 2019.

(01/304) Journalist on Trial in Muş…

The final trial of the case against İdris Sayılğan, reporter of Dicle News Agency which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, is held on Muş Heavy Penal Court No 2, on January 25, 2019. The court sentenced İdris Sayılğan to 8 years and 3 months for ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

İdris Sayılğan was arrested for his news reports, phone conversations and social media posts on October 24, 2016.

(01/305) Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 27, 2019 that, the indictment of Diyarbakır Public Prosecutor’s Office against Lezgin Akdeniz, a reporter of Mezopotamya News Agency, is accepted by Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 9. The indictment demands Lezgin Akdeniz to be sentenced for ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation successively’.

The case against HDP Hakkari MP and DTK co-chair Leyla Güven, for her declarations, activities within DTK and the events and actions she participated in, is held on Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 9 on January 25, 2019. The indictment demands jail penalty from 25 years to 46 years and 6 months for Leyla Güven. Leyla Güven did not attend the trial. The court released Leyla Güven on judicial control conditions and adjourned the trial.

Leyla Güven was detained on January 22, 2018, and was arrested on January 31, 2018 Leyla Güven started an indefinite hunger strike in prison on November 7, 2018, demanding an end to isolation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan. It is learned that Leyla Güven would continue hunger strike outside the prison too.

(01/307) Former Co-Chair of HDP on Trial…

The case against Selahattin Demirtaş, former co-chair of HDP, on Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 19, is held on January 23-25, 2019. The indictment demands jail penalty for Selahattin Demirtaş on the charges of ‘establishing and leading an illegal organisation’, ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’, and ‘praising an offence and offender’. Selahattin Demirtaş joined the trial via sound and vision system. The court decided to continue detention for Selahattin Demirtaş and adjourned the trial to April 24-25, 2019.

(01/308) Former HDP Executive on Trial…

It is learned that the indictment of Hatay Public Prosecutor’s Office against Zeki Koç, former member of HDP Party Assembly, for “Honourable Öcalan” expression he used in a speech and his social media posts, is accepted by Hatay Heavy Penal Court No 2 on January 25, 2019. The indictment demands penalty for Zeki Koç for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’. The first trial will be held on February 13, 2019.

Zeki Koç was detained and arrested on October 25, 2018.

(01/309) Executive of EMEP on Trial in Tunceli…

The case against Mustafa Taşkale, general executive committee member and Tunceli provincial chair of Labour Party (EMEP), on Tunceli Heavy Penal Court is held on January 25, 2019. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to March 8, 2019. Mustafa Taşkale was arrested on November 17, 2016 and was released by the court on judicial control conditions on May 29, 2017.

(01/310) Case of Furkan Foundation…

On January 24, 2019, on the hearing of the case against Furkan Education and Care Foundation executives and members, Adana Heavy Penal Court No 4 decided to release Alparslan Kuytul, founder of the foundation and Ali Alagöz the chair of the foundation on judicial control conditions. It is learned that the prosecutor’s office objected the release decision and the higher court accepted the appeal, as a result Alparslan Kuytul and Ali Alagöz are detained on January 26, 2019 and then arrested.

It is learned that the police took serious security measures around Alparslan Kuytul’s house in Adana, and his spouse Semra Kuytul who reacted to this in front of journalists, was detained in front of the house on January 27, 2019, and was released after statement procedures.

(01/311) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On January 25, 2019, 29 people are detained in house raids in Ankara.

12 of 43 people who were detained on January 22, 2019 and following days through an Izmir based investigation, are arrested by the court on January 26, 2019. 31 people are released on judicial control conditions.
