On August 16, 2018, 1 soldier died and 3 soldiers were wounded due to explosion of preplaced material in rural areas of Kömür town of Adıyaman’s central district during an operation of security forces.
(08/145) Co-Mayor Detained in Adıyaman…
On August 16, 2018, 8 people including Yusuf Yuka, DBP member co-mayor of Kömür town, are detained in house raids in relation to death of 4 soldiers, on the charge of ‘aiding and abetting an illegal organisation’ in central district of Adıyaman. It is learned that detained people are taken to Adıyaman Gendarmerie Command.
(08/146) Prisoner’s Spouse Being Forced to Take Off Prosthetic Leg at Visits…
It is learned that HDP Ankara MP Filiz Kerestecioğlu presented a parliamentary question addressed to Abdülhamit Gül, Minister of Justice, on August 15, 2018 about a prisoner’s spouse who was forced to take off her prosthetic leg during prison visits. It is reported in the parliamentary question that, Çiğdem Ergün, wife of Ramazan Ergün who was being kept in İzmir Aliağa Şakran Prison for 19 months, was forced to take off her prosthetic leg and go through X-ray scanners.
(08/147) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…
The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling for a while to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on August 16, 2018 at 13.30 and 18.00.
It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on August 16, 2018, 3 people (Mehmet Dersulu, Emre Ünlü and Gülnaz Bozkurt) and at 18.00 3 people (Acun Karadağ, Mahir Kılıç and Emre Ünlü) were detained.
Thus in total 6 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on August 16, 2018. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.
(08/148) Rejection to Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan…
It is learned that the appeal made on August 16, 2018 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s lawyers in order to visit their client was rejected the same day on the grounds of limitations for prisoners in accordance with the law on the execution of sentences and security measures (law no 5275). With the last rejection, it was the 781st time that appeals for visiting Öcalan have been rejected so far. Abdullah Öcalan has met his lawyers on July 27, 2011 for the last time.

3 of 15 people including HDP Mersin co-chair Sevgi Aktaş and HDP provincial executives who had been detained in house raids on August 15, 2018 in Mersin, are arrested on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation on social media’ and on the grounds of an anonymous witness. 11 people are released provided that 7 of them on juridical control conditions. It is learned that additional detention time is given for Kadir Beştaş, and he was taken to Police Headquarters once again. The names of arrested people are: Fatma Yıldız, Ramazan Gezicini and Saim Karasu. The names of people released are: HDP Mersin co-chair Sevgi Aktaş, HDP Mersin executives İlhami Yurtsever, Mehmet Koçak and Nasih Çetinkaya; Dilan Hazar, Ferhat Pişgin, Halil İbrahim Sinelen, Serkan Şahin, Salih Bağrıyanık, Murat Polat and Salih Eşiyok.
(08/150) Political Party Members Detained for Social Media Posts in Izmir…
Önder Eraldemir, member of Labour Party (EMEP); Menekşe Ecer, People’s Democratic Party (HDP) Çeşme district executive; and Turgut Aydın, Freedom and Solidarity Party (ÖDP) member, who were detained for social media posts on August 15, 2018 in Izmir, are released by the court on juridical control conditions and with a ban on leaving the country on August 16, 2018.

A German citizen named İlhan A. who was detained in Sarıbaşak village of Elazığ’s Karakoçan district on August 16, 2018, is arrested by the court for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.
German Federal Foreign Office has announced that 4 German citizens were kept arrested in Turkey for political reasons as of February 23, 2018. With the last arrest the number of German citizens arrested in Turkey raised up to 5.
(08/152) People Arrested for ‘Insulting the President’ in Izmir…
9 of 11 people who were arrested for ‘insulting the President’ in Izmir, are released on juridical control conditions by İzmir Penal Court of Peace No 1, as an interlocutory judgment during regular case review. The court decided to continue detention for 2 people.
11 people had been detained on the charge of ‘insulting the President’ at an entertainment place where they have gone before the meeting of Muharrem İnce, CHP’s candidate for presidency in Izmir on June 21, 2018; and had been arrested on June 23, 2018.

On August 16, 2018, 3 people are detained on warrants in Ankara and Aydın.
