According to a statement by the Council for Occupational Health and Safety (İSİG), at least 148 workers lost their lives while on the job in March 2026, including 16 women, 15 refugees/migrants, and 8 children.

On April 9, 2026, İzmir Bornova Mayor Ömer Ekşi, along with three others, was detained on charges of “aggravated fraud” and “forgery of official documents.” All four were released the same day following their statements before the magistrate’s court.

On April 10, 2026, as part of an investigation into Bolu Municipality, Bolu Deputy Mayor Leyla Beykoz and City Council member Aydan Özdemir were detained.

Umut-Sen Organizing Coordinator Başaran Aksu, who was detained on the grounds of a social media post made by life advocate Esra Işık regarding her arrest over protests against the urgent expropriation of agricultural lands around the Akbelen Forest, was arrested on April 9, 2026, by the magistrate’s court to which he was referred, on charges of “publicly disseminating misleading information” and “inciting the public to hatred and hostility.”

As part of an investigation into the Mersin Yenişehir Municipality, 31 people, including municipal employees, were detained on April 10, 2026.

On April 7, 2026, eight individuals were detained on the grounds of social media posts related to the attack on the Israeli consulate in Istanbul’s Beşiktaş district; one of them was arrested on April 9, 2026, and referred to the magistrate’s court on charges of “publicly insulting the state’s security forces” and “inciting the public to hatred or hostility or insulting them,” while the remaining 7 were released under judicial supervision with conditions including a travel ban and a requirement to sign in regularly.

The final hearing in the case filed against journalist Altan Sancar at the Ankara Criminal Court of First Instance No. 27 over a news report he had published was held on April 9, 2026. The court acquitted Altan Sancar of the charge of “publicly disseminating misleading information.”

It was reported that an investigation was launched by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office following a criminal complaint filed by the Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK) regarding a news report published by journalist Bahadır Özgür in 2022, and that the journalist went to the prosecutor’s office on April 9, 2026, to give a statement.

According to news reports on April 10, 2026, it was learned that the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against journalist Neşe İdil on the grounds of “inciting the public to hatred and hostility” based on a social media post she made, and that the journalist was summoned to give a statement.

The final hearing of the case filed at the Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance No. 70 against 49 individuals accused of participating in protests held at Saraçhane Square in the Fatih district to protest the arrest and detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu took place on April 10, 2026. The court acquitted all 49 individuals of the charge of “violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No. 2911.” Additionally, the court decided to file a criminal complaint with the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office regarding allegations of torture and other ill-treatment raised during the hearing.

The trial of Yunus Kılıç, who was charged in connection with slogans shouted during a protest in Istanbul regarding Palestine, continued on April 10, 2026, at the Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance No. 27. The indictment seeks to punish Yunus Kılıç for the crime of “insulting the President.” The court adjourned the hearing until June 18, 2026.

The Criminal Chamber, the case was reheard, and the final hearing took place on April 10, 2026. The court sentenced the four defendant police officers to six years in prison each for the crime of “tampering with official documents.”

The trial of police officer A.E., regarding the injury sustained by Ergin Tekin, the provincial chairman of the Labor Party, as a result of police intervention during a press conference held in Tunceli on July 19, 2024, began on April 9, 2026, at the Tunceli Criminal Court of First Instance No. 2. The court adjourned the hearing until June 18, 2026.
(04/073) Television and Radio Channels Penalized by RTÜK…
According to news reports on April 9, 2026, it was learned that the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) imposed administrative fines on National Channel 1 due to statements made by Vatan Party Chairman Doğu Perinçek, and on Radio Leader İzmir for reading messages from prisoners and their relatives in prisons.
