(09/142) Journalist Subjected to Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Istanbul…
On September 17, 2025, it is learned from news coverage of September 17, 2025 that journalist Neyran Eldan was subjected to physical violence of the police officers who came to her house for a noise report.
Neyran Eldan stated the following in her statement to the press “Two police officers who came to the house on a noise report wanted to take me and my husband out, and when I asked for permission to take my medication, I was subjected to violence. They made me lie down on the floor in the house, sprayed pepper spray in my eyes at close range and put handcuffs on me (…) Then 6 police officers and a supervisor came to the house and entered even though there was no search warrant or detention warrant.”

26 of 45 people, including Bayrampaşa Mayor Hasan Mutlu, who were detained on September 13, 2025 in the investigation against Bayrampaşa Municipality, were arrested by the Criminal Judgeship of Peace on September 16, 2025 on charges of ‘embezzlement’, ‘bribery’ and ‘bid rigging’. 19 people were released on judicial control conditions.

Retired Colonel Orkun Özeller is detained on the allegation of ‘provoking hatred and hostility among people’ through the investigation against him for his remarks about Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) chairman, at Ordu Courthouse on September 17, 2025. Orkun Özeller was arrested by the criminal court of peace on the same day.

A person named Meltem Gökhanoğlu was detained in Istanbul on September 17, 2025 upon the complaint of MHP Chairman’s lawyer based on her social media posts. Meltem Gökhanoğlu was released by the criminal court of peace on judicial control conditions on the same day.

The first trial of the case against Atilla Özdoğan and Özlem Feza Sezer Bayram, through the investigation against Peoples’ Democratic Congress (HDK), started on September 16, 2025 at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 24. The indictment demands sentence for 2 people on the charge of ‘being an illegal organization member’. The court decided to suspend the prosecution against Atilla Özdoğan and acquitted Özlem Feza Sezer Bayram. The court also ruled for the release of 2 people.
Atila Özdoğan, Özlem Feza Sezer Bayram were arrested on February 21, 2025.
09/148) Nihat Kazanhan Trial..
On September 17, 2025, the retrial of the case against special operations police officer M.N.G., following the Constitutional Court’s ruling on violation of the right to life in the killing of Nihat Kazanhan (12, e) by police fire in Cizre district of Şırnak in 2015, continued at Cizre Heavy Penal Court No 1. The court decided to issue a writ of compulsory appearance for the person using the phone number registered to M.N.G. and to continue the warrant for M.N.G. with a red notice and adjourned the trial to December 12, 2025.

On September 17, 2025, 10 people were detained in operations conducted in 3 provinces through an Ankara based investigation against the secret structuring in Naval Forces Command.
