(08/089) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…

According to news reports on August 21, 2025, a disciplinary investigation was launched against a prisoner named İsmail Çelik, who is being held in Istanbul Marmara (Silivri) Type L Prison No. 1, on the grounds that he made social media posts through other people.

According to news reports on August 21, 2025, a letter sent to Nuriye Aslan, the co-mayor of Akdeniz district in Mersin, who is being held in Kayseri Bünyan Women’s Prison, was confiscated on the grounds that it was “objectionable.” The news also stated that letters written by some prisoners held in the same prison to PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan were also confiscated.

According to news reports on August 22, 2025, an investigation was launched by the Istanbul Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office against ETHA editor Nadiye Gürbüz on the grounds of social media posts she made about her daughter, who is in prison, and it was learned that Nadiye Gürbüz went to the İstanbul Provincial Police Headquarters to give a statement as part of the investigation.

It has been learned that an investigation has been launched by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office against at least 15 students of the Middle East University on the grounds that they participated in protests related to the arrest and detention of the Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor, and that the individuals in question have been summoned to the Ankara rovincial Police Headquarters o give statements.

(08/092) Discrimination in the Turkish Grand National Assembly…

It has been reported that the request of Peace Mothers Nezahat Teke and Rabia Kıran to speak in Kurdish during the meeting of the National Solidarity, Brotherhood, and Democracy Commission established in the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) on August 20, 2025, regarding the resolution of the Kurdish issue, was rejected by the Assembly Presidency. It was reported that the words spoken by the two individuals in Kurdish were recorded in the minutes as “a word not in Turkish” and replaced with “…” and that the two individuals spoke in Turkish after their request was rejected.

(08/093) Social Media Accounts Blocked…

According to news reports on August 21, 2025, the social media account of journalist Rojda Altıntaş was blocked by the Diyarbakır 1st Criminal Court of Peace on June 3, 2025, on the grounds of protecting national security and public order, and the account was made invisible from Turkey.

On August 21, 2025, news reports indicated that three articles published on the websites https://www.tele1.com.tr/, https://www.cumhuriyet.com.tr/, https://www.gazetepencere.com/ were subject to an access restriction imposed by the Edirne 1st Criminal Court of Peace on August 8, 2025, citing national security and public order as grounds.
