(01/030) Torture and Other İll-treatment in Prison

It is learnt from the news coverage of 6 January 2025 that 3 prisoners, who are held at Ağrı Patnos L Type Prison and were subjected to torture and other ill-treatment of prison wards, were transferred to other prisons against their will and demand. The names of the prisons to which 3 prisoners were transferred could not be learnt.

(01/031) Journalist Under Investigation…

It is learnt from the news coverage of 7 January 2025 that the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has initiated an investigation into 21 journalists, including reporters from Hürriyet, ANKA News Agency, Ulusal Kanal, SZC TV, VOA, Gazete Duvar, Evrensel, Reuters, and Medyascope, on allegations that they took photos and videos with their mobile phones during the verdict hearing of the Kobane case on May 16, 2024.

(01/032) Discriminatory and Phobic Statement…

President of Turkey’s speech following the cabinet meeting on January 6, 2025, included discriminatory and phobic remarks against LGBTİ+ individuals: “It is common knowledge that global malevolent forces are promoting policies aimed at genderlessness. The LGBT issue is currently one of the most serious threats to the existence of the family.”

(01/033) YouTube Channel Warned by RTÜK

It is learnt from the news coverage of 6 January 2025 that the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) has given Cumhuriyet Newspaper’s YouTube channel, TvCumhuriyet, a 72-hour deadline to either pay a license fee or cease broadcasting. If the license fee is not paid or broadcasting is not terminated within 72 hours, the access to the channel will be banned.

It is learnt from the news coverage of 6 January 2025 that X social media platform has blocked the accounts of Mezopotamya Agency, Jinnews News Agency, Yeni Yaşam Newspaper, and Siyasi Haber on the grounds of protecting national security and public order.

(01/035) Persons Detained in Ankara…

22 persons, among whom there are 22 who were expelled from public services by decree with the force of law, were detained on January 6, 2025 in Ankara for “acting in the financial branch of the organization.”
