(11/094) Journalists Subjected to Interventions and Preventions in Diyarbakır, Batman, and Şırnak…

According to a statement released on 8 November 2024 by the Media and Law Studies Association (MLSA), at least 10 journalists were subjected to verbal and/or physical violence by law enforcement officers, prevented from reporting news, and 6 journalists were detained in Diyarbakır, Batman and Şırnak in the last 24 days.

(11/095) Municipality Councillors Subjected to a Physical Attack in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of 8 November 2024 that, during the Istanbul Ümraniye Municipality Assembly meeting held on 7 November 2024, elected municipal council members from the Republican People’s Party (CHP) were subjected to physical assault by a group of spectators. It is not known whether anyone was injured due to the attack.

(11/096) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment Under Custody in Mardin…

It is learned from the news coverage of 8 November 2024 that, E.Ö. (17, m), who was detained in Mardin on November 7, 2024, on the grounds of participating in the protests in Mardin against the decision to dismiss co-mayors of Mardin, Batman and Halfeti districts of Urfa and appoint trustees to replace them, was subjected to physical violence and threats by the police and was injured due to physical violence.

E.Ö. stated the following to the press: “I was detained by two plain-clothes police officers yesterday around 3:30 or 4 pm when I was going to the restroom a little away from the vigil. The day before, I was leading the halay at the vigil. We wore yellow, red, and green colors in the halay. When they took me, they said ‘You are too visible’. They detained me, then they swore at me and beat me. They started beating me with a baton. When I was hit on my head and face, I tried to protect myself with my hand, but my palm was smashed. Then they took me to Mardin Police Headquarters. At the police station, they told me, ‘You will leave the DEM Party. You will not go to the watch area from there‘’.

(11/097) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of 8 November 2024 that, Aynur Aşan, a prisoner in Ankara Sincan Women’s Prison was transferred to Antalya L Type Prison against her will on 19 October 2024 and was not informed where she was taken to during the transfer process. It is also reported in the news that Aynur Aşan was subjected to a strip search in Antalya L Type Prison, was threatened by correction officers and disciplinary proceedings were initiated against her, and after being kept in Antalya L Type Prison for a while, she was transferred to Izmir Şakran Women’s Prison against her will.

It is learned from the news coverage of November 8, 2024, that Celal Punar, a prisoner in Istanbul Marmara (Silivri) Prison was subjected to disciplinary proceedings by the prison administration on the grounds of ‘conducting education and propaganda activities of criminal organizations’’, on the grounds of personal notes found on a paper he threw away on October 9, 2024; and that Celal Punar was sentenced to 11 days of solitary confinement without his defense being taken.

(11/098) Prevention of Right to Access Health in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of 8 November 2024 that, Aynur Aşan, a woman prisoner who was subjected to a strip search in Antalya L Type Prison, was not referred to the prison infirmary although she had a health problem in the room where she was kept for an hour after she objected to strip search.

(11/099) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan not Responded to…

It is learned that the appeal made on November 8, 2024, to the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s family and tutelary along with the families and tutelary of Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded.

(11/100) Police Intervention in Protests against the Trustee Decisions…

On 7 November 2024, the police intervened against the protest in front of the municipality building in Batman against the decision to dismiss co-mayors of Mardin, Batman, and Halfeti district of Urfa and appoint trustees in their places. It is not known whether anyone was detained or not.

On 7 November 2024, the police used tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets against the protests staged for the same reason in Huzur, Cumhuriyet, Emekli Toki, Pazaryeri, Hilal, Karşıyaka, Petrolkent, Bağlar, Korike, Bayındır, Cudi and Petrol neighborhoods of Batman. It is not known whether anyone was detained as a result of the intervention.

It is learned that on November 7, 2024, the police intervened against the protest of the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) district organization in the Avcılar district of Istanbul for the same reason, and forced people gathered in front of the district office into the office by using physical violence.

(11/101) Party Executives and MPs Prevented from Entering the Municipality Building in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of 8 November 2024 that, the police prevented the delegation including Istanbul MP Yüksel Mansur Kılınç, Zonguldak MP Deniz Yavuzyılmaz, Ankara MP Umut Akdoğan, Istanbul MP Yüksel Mansur Kılınç, Istanbul MP Yüksel Mansur Kılınç, Zonguldak MP Deniz Yavuzyılmaz, Ankara MP Umut Akdoğan and CHP Deputy Chair Gülşah Deniz Atalar from entering the municipality building during the vigil for justice in front of the Esenyurt Municipality against the arrest of Istanbul Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer and appointment of a trustee in his place on 31 October 2024.

(11/102) People Detained and Arrested for the Protests Against the Trustee Decisions in Batman and Mardin…

Journalist Mizgin Sönük, Batman Municipality Assembly members Özdemir Çelik and Hatice Taş, Vedat Özer, and Yusuf Kaya who were detained in Batman on November 4, 2024, were arrested by the Criminal Peace Judgeship on November 7, 2024 on the charge of ‘resisting to prevent duty’.

On 7 November 2024, 3 persons including 1 child [E.Ö. (17, m), Doğan Şimdi, Süleyman Kahraman] were detained in house raids in the Artuklu and Kızıltepe districts of Mardin. E.Ö. was released the same day after statement procedures at the police.

(11/103) Syrian Citizens Arrested in Kilis…

2 people (Syrian citizens H.İ. and H.B.) who were detained in house raids in Kilis on 8 November 2024, were arrested by the Criminal Peace Judgeship on the allegations of ‘illegally crossing from Syria to Turkey’ and ‘being a member of an illegal organization’.

(11/104) Former Union Chair on Trial in Ankara…

The trial of the case against Gönül Adıbelli, former co-chair of the Health and Social Service Employees’ Union (SES), for her trade union activities, was held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 4 on November 7, 2024. The court adjourned the trial to 14 January 2025.

(11/105) Journalist on Trial in Izmir…

It is learned from the news coverage of 8 November 2024 that, the indictment against journalist Delal Akyüz, on the grounds of his professional activities and secret witness statements, was accepted by Izmir Heavy Penal Court No 13. The indictment demands a sentence for the journalist on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The first hearing of the case will be held on 10 February 2025.

Delal Akyüz was detained on 13 February 2024 and released on house confinement on 16 February 2024.

(11/106) Banned Film Screening in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of 7 November 2024 that the screening of Queer, the opening film of MUBI Fest Istanbul, which was to be held between 7-10 November 2024, was banned by the Kadıköy District Governorate on the grounds of ‘security’ and ‘provocative content that would endanger social peace’. It is reported that the festival was canceled by MUBI Turkey upon the ban.

(11/107) TV Channels Fined by RTÜK…

According to the news coverage of 7 November 2024, the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) fined Akit TV, Beyaz TV, Kanal 3, Meltem TV, NTV, Show TV, Tele1, CNN Türk, TGRT Haber, SZC TV, Halk TV and Flash Haber channels for violating the broadcast ban on the attack on TUSAŞ; Bugün TV channel for the remarks in a program on the death of Fetullah Gülen; Halk TV, NOW TV, Tele1 channels for CHP Group Deputy Chair’s comments on the solution process; SZC TV channel for various statements of Cemal Enginyurt, Ordu MP of Democrat Party.

(11/108) Banned Events and Demonstrations…

The Governorate of Van announced on 7 November 2024 that demonstrations, open-air meetings, indoor and outdoor meetings, press statements, sit-in protests and surveys, setting up/opening tents and stands, organising petitions, distributing leaflets, brochures and flyers and similar actions and activities as well as the entry and exit of people who are considered to participate in these actions and activities are banned for 3 days between 8 November 2024 and 10 November 2024.
