It is learned from the news coverage of 8 August 2024 that, 2 militants died in clashes between Turkish Armed Forces units and HPG militants in Metina area of Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on 9 and 17 June 2024.
(08/057) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Maraş…
It is claimed in the news coverage of August 7, 2024, that on August 2, 2024, during a traffic inspection on Haydar Aliyev Boulevard in Central district of Maraş, Yunus Emre Deligönül, a local shopkeeper, and traffic police officer U. K. had a quarrel for an unknown reason and U. K. sprayed tear gas at Yunus Emre Deligönül and inflicted verbal and physical violence on him. It is also reported in the news that Yunus Emre Deligönül obtained a medical report from the hospital documenting the physical violence and filed a criminal complaint against U. K., and traffic police officer U. K. filed a complaint against Yunus Emre Deligönül for insulting him.
(08/058) Racist Attacks in Kayseri…
It is learned from the news coverage of 8 August 2024 that, after the racist attacks targeting refugees/asylum-seekers, which started in Kayseri on 30 June 2024 and continued in various cities of Turkey, approximately 3000 Syrian refugees/asylum-seekers left Kayseri, and at least 24 workplaces of Syrian refugees/asylum-seekers were closed down.
Syrian citizen human rights defender Taha Elgazi stated the following to the press: “In Kayseri Organised Industrial Zone (KOSB), 24 workplaces, mostly textile workshops owned by Syrians or where Syrians worked in large numbers, were closed down. Because thousands of Syrians were working here. When such an attack happened, people became anxious. Thousands of people left the city. Those who run the workplaces could not find staff’.
(08/059) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…
On 7 August 2024, the Batman branch of the Human Rights Association (IHD) made a press statement and stated that some prisoners in Batman M Type Prison were subjected to strip searches while entering and leaving the prison and during hospital transfers, and were forced to stand up during phone calls and closed visits, that prisoners were forced to stand during roll-calls, letters written in Kurdish by prisoners were not sent out of the prison, letters written in Kurdish sent to prisoners from outside the prison were scribbled or not delivered, wards were provided with a small amount of water and prisoners were not given the necessary cleaning materials for cleaning the wards.
It is learned from the news coverage of 8 August 2024 that Osman Çağlar, a prisoner in Ağrı Patnos L Type Prison has been kept in a single room for 2 years. It is also reported in the news reports that the water supply in the prison is dirty and prisoners have to buy drinking water by their own means.
It is learned from the news coverage of August 8, 2024, that, the release of Ramazan Karataş, a prisoner in Konya Ereğli High-Security Prison was postponed for the 3rd time for 6 months by the decision of the Administration and Observation Board, on the grounds of ‘lack of remorse’ and ‘loyalty to an illegal organization’. Ramazan Karataş’s release was postponed by the decision of the Administration and Observation Board for 9 months, one for 3 months, and 2 times for 3 months each.
On 8 August 2024, it is learned from the news coverage of August 8, 2024 that, Vahdettin Erdemci, an ill prisoner in Konya Ereğli High Security Prison was subjected to physical violence of the wardens on duty in prison and was wounded in various parts of his body. Vahdettin Erdemci’s son Devran Erdemci made the following statements about torture and ill-treatment to which his father was subjected ‘My father has COPD and asthma. He also has chronic illnesses. They took my father to the infirmary by beating him and dragging him on the floor. My father had scars on his hands and face. His skin was peeled off. They were subjected to violence there (…) My father told me that they were told things like ‘We will enter here and search you naked by force’. My father repeatedly said, ‘(…) This is not Van, this is Konya (…) you are a terrorist‘’.
(08/060) Prevention of Right to Access Health in Prison…
It is learned from the news coverage of 8 August 2024 that Osman Çağlar, who is kept in Ağrı Patnos L Type Prison, has health problems and cannot access treatment.
Osman Çağlar’s mother Hatice Çağlar stated the following to the press about her son’s inability to access treatment: “My son is not being treated despite his illnesses. He has a heart disease. Due to the torture he was subjected to, he developed diseases in his urinary tract. He had no illness before his imprisonment. He got sick in prison”.

It is learned that the appeal made on August 8, 2024, to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by lawyers in order to visit their clients PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded to.
(08/062) Gendarmerie Intervention Against a Protest in Urfa…
It is learned from the news coverage of August 7, 2024, that in the Ceylanpınar district of Urfa, Dicle Electricity (DEDAŞ) went to Yoncalı and Yeşiltepe neighborhoods of Ceylanpınar district of Urfa, accompanied by gendarmerie, on the grounds of electricity debts, and detained 13 people who protested the electricity cut-off. The names of detained people could not be learned.
(08/063) Party Executives and Others Arrested in Osmaniye…
4 of the 5 people [Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Osmaniye Central District Co-Chairs Sevgi Aydın and Faruk Kahraman, Hakan Kahraman and Murat Kahraman] who were detained in house raids in Osmaniye on August 6, 2024, on the grounds of “making propaganda for an illegal organization”, were arrested by Osmaniye Criminal Peace Judgeship on the charge of “making propaganda for an illegal organization” on August 7, 2024.
One person, Hivda Kahraman, who was detained through the same investigation, was arrested for the same reason and on the same charge.
(08/064) Obligation to Petition for Weddings in Van Bahçesaray…
It is learned from the news coverage of 8 August 2024 that the district governorate of Bahçesaray of Van imposed a petition requirement for weddings.
It was reported in the news that the following statements were included in the information message sent to the mukhtars by the district governorship: “To the attention of our mukhtars: When there is a wedding in your neighborhood or hamlet, the owner of the wedding will submit a petition to the district governorship at least two days before the wedding and bring it to the gendarmerie. We will notify the person about the issues to be complied with regarding the wedding’.

It is learned from the news coverage of 7 August 2024 that, online game platform Roblox’s website https://www.roblox.com was banned from access on the grounds of ‘protection of national security and public order’ by Adana Criminal Peace Judgeship No 6 on 7 August 2024.
It is learned from the news coverage of 8 August 2024 that 3 news reports on https://www.sozcu.com.tr, https://www.gercekgundem.com and https://12punto.com.tr, which contain the name of Ahmet Burak Erdoğan, the son of the President, were banned from access by Istanbul Anadolu Criminal Peace Judgeship No 9 on 7 August 2024, on the grounds of violation of personal rights, and the content was ordered to be deleted.
