(10/214) Police Intervention Against a Worker Protest in Ankara…

It is learned from the news coverage of 15 October 2024 that, the police intervened against the workers and union executives who were on hunger strike at Kurtuluş Park in the Çankaya district of Ankara on October 15, 2024, within the scope of their resistance demanding average wages and recognition of union rights, and detained 37 people on the grounds of ‘endangering public security’. It is learned that all workers and union executives who were on hunger strike in the park were detained after the intervention. It is reported that 1 worker (Eyip Can) fainted during the intervention and was not taken to the hospital for 40 minutes. Detained people were released on the same day after statement procedures by the police.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 16, 2024, that, workers were prevented by the police from entering Kurtuluş Park to continue the hunger strike on October 16, 2021.

(10/215) Attack on a Cemevi in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of 15 October 2024 that, a person came to Garip Dede Dergâhı Cemevi in the Küçükçekmece district of Istanbul and demanded to pray and perform ablution, and that the cemevi was attacked because his demand was not accepted. It is reported that the attacker was detained by the police.

(10/216) Attack on a Party Building in Bursa…

It is learned that on October 16, 2024, the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) district office in the İnegöl district of Bursa was attacked by a person, and material damage was caused. It is reported that the person was caught by DEM Party members and handed to the police.

(10/217) Racist Attack Against a Women’s Protest at a University…

It is learned from the news coverage of 15 October 2024 that, a group of men, reported to be members of Ülkü Ocakları (Grey Wolves), attacked women students at Koç University in Istanbul, who were making a statement against femicides and chanting ‘jin, jiyan, azadi’ (women, life, freedom) in Kurdish. It is reported that no one was injured in the attack.

(10/218) Racist Attack in Ankara…

It is learned that on 15 October 2024, the words ‘Jin Jiyan Azadi’ written in Kurdish on a wall called ‘Women’s Wall’ at the Middle East Technical University (METU) campus in Ankara, was scribbled over. It is stated in the news reports that the writings in Turkish and Farsi were not touched.

(10/219) Party Executive Detained in Malatya…

On 16 October 2024, DEM Party district co-chair Süleyman Bozkurt was detained in a house raid in the Darende district of Malatya. The reason for the detention could not be learned.

(10/220) People Detained in Diyarbakır…

On October 16, 2024, 15 people were detained in house raids in Diyarbakır on the allegations of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ through the investigation against DEM Party’s ‘Freedom Rally’ which was banned by the Governorate of Diyarbakır. The names of the detainees could not be learned.

(10/221) Soldier Intervention Against a Protest in Şırnak…

On 15 October 2024, the police intervened in the Peace Mothers’ Assembly members who gathered in the Silopi district of Şırnak demanding “No to war, peace now” and detained 22 people including Şırnak Cizre co-mayor Abdurrahim Durmuş, Democratic Regions Party (DBP) assembly member Gögercin Aras, DEM Party Mardin provincial co-chair Necla Acıbucak, DEM Party Cizre district co-chair Yılmaz Sanrı and 3 journalists (Zeynep Durgut, Mahmut Altıntaş, Derya Ren) by using torture and ill-treatment. It is learned that DEM Party Başverimli town co-chair Lezgin Kösen was wounded during the intervention and was taken to hospital for treatment. It is also learned that Abdurrahim Durmuş, co-mayor of Cizre municipality, Silopi municipality council member Abdulvahap Admiş, and DBP member Sadun Aklant were wounded in various parts of their bodies. The names of detainees are as follows: Perihan Nayır, Nurten Sancar, Baran Bakin, Davut Kalkan, Dahila Admış, Aynur Ayas, Perihan Nayır, Mehmet Akman, Lezgin Kösen, Şırnak Cizre co-mayor Abdurrahim Durmuş, DBP council member Gögercin Aras, DEM Party Mardin provincial co-chair Necla Acıbucak, DEM Party Cizre district co-chair Yılmaz Sanrı, Sarun Aklant, journalists Zeynep Durgut, Mahmut Altıntaş, Derya Ren. It was reported in the news reports that the Mothers of Peace Assembly members continued their protest in front of DEM Party Başverimli town office.

(10/222) Journalist on Trial in Osmaniye…

The final hearing of the case against Erkan Yiğitsözlü, reporter of KHK TV who was dismissed from his job at Anadolu Agency (AA) with a decree with the Force of Law (KHK), was held at Osmaniye Heavy Penal Court No 2 on 15 October 2024. The court sentenced the journalist to 6 years and 3 months for ‘being a member of an illegal organization’.

(10/223) Journalist on Trial in Ankara…

The first trial of the case against T24 reporter Asuman Aranca, for her news reports on the killing of Sinan Ateş, former President of the Ülkü Ocakları, started on 15 October 2024 at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 52. The indictment demands a sentence for the journalist on the charge of ‘violation of confidentiality’. After defence hearings, the court adjourned the trial to 11 March 2025.

(10/224) Person on Trial in Ankara…

It is learned from the news coverage of 16 October 2024 that, Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 53 accepted the indictment prepared by the Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office against peace signatory academic Cenk Yiğiter, who was dismissed from his job by a state of emergency decree, on the grounds of his social media posts. The indictment demands a sentence for Cenk Yiğiter on the charge of ‘insulting the President’. The first hearing of the case will be held on 18 December 2024.

(10/225) People on Trial in Van…

The final trial of the case against 6 people who were detained and then arrested during the police intervention against the protests staged on 2 and 3 April 2024 to protest the refusal to hand over the municipal mandate to the co-Mayor of Van Metropolitan Municipality, Abdullah Zeydan, was held at Van Heavy Penal Court No 2 on 15 October 2024. The court sentenced 3 people to 5 years 11 months and 20 days and 1 person to 8 years for ‘violating 2911 Law on Meetings and Demonstrations’ and ‘resisting a public officer to prevent duty’. The court released 1 person and decided to continue the detention of 3 people. It is learned that the court did not make a verdict for 2 people and decided to release them.

(10/226) The Yusuf Akın Case…

On 15 October 2024, the retrial of the case against soldiers K.E.O., S.T., B.Y., Y.E.K., D.G. in connection with the death of civilian Yusuf Akın and the injury of Mehmet Eren during military operations in the Nusaybin district of Mardin on 20 December 2011, continued at Mardin Heavy Penal Court No 1. The court rejected the request of the complainant’s lawyer for judicial control measures against the defendant soldiers and adjourned the trial to 28 January 2025.

5 soldiers were acquitted by the court. After the acquittal, the Constitutional Court (AYM) ruled that Yusuf Akın’s right to life was violated and sent the case file to Mardin Heavy Penal Court No 1 for retrial.

(10/227) Termination of the Broadcast of A Radio Channel…

It is learned from the news coverage of October 16, 2024, that radio channel Açık Radyo, whose broadcasting license was canceled by the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK), ceased terrestrial broadcasting.

On 24 April 2024, RTÜK imposed an administrative fine and a 5-day broadcast suspension on Açık Radyo within the scope of Article 8 of the Law No. 6112 on the Establishment and Broadcasting Services of Radio and Television Enterprises and cancelled Açık Radyo’s broadcasting licence on the grounds of the statements made by a guest in the radio programme ‘Açık Gazete’ about the Armenian Genocide. Upon this, Açık Radyo applied to Ankara 21st Administrative Court for a stay of execution. The court initially ruled for a stay of execution, but upon RTÜK’s objection, the court rejected the request for a stay of execution. Thereupon, RTÜK notified the radio station on 11 October 2024 that its licence was cancelled.

On 16 October 2024, 13 people were detained in house raids in Manisa on the allegations of ‘carrying out activities within an illegal organization’.

(10/229) People Arrested in Edirne…

It is learned from the news coverage of 16 October 2024 that, 2 people who were detained in Edirne in an alleged attempt to illegally cross to Greece, were arrested by the criminal peace judgeship.

(10/230) People Detained and Arrested in Ankara…

It is learned from the news coverage of 16 October 2024 that, 4 of the 33 people who were detained on 8 October 2024 through an Ankara-based investigation against the secret structure of Land and Air Forces Commands and Gendarmerie General Command, were arrested by the criminal peace judgeship to which they were referred and 29 people were released on judicial control conditions.
