(10/091) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Istanbul…

On October 7, 2024, the police intervened against the march of Thousand Young People for Palestine members to the Istanbul Provincial Directorate of Commerce, to protest Israel’s attacks on Gaza, with tear gas.  It is learned that 1 person was detained during the intervention and was released afterward. The name of the detained person could not be learned.

On 7 October 2024, the police intervened against the protest in Ankara for the same cause and detained at least 20 people by using physical violence and handcuffing them behind their backs. The names of the detainees could not be learned.

(10/092) Event Prevented by the Police in Istanbul…

It is learned that the police prevented the commemoration and press statement of students and graduates of Eyüpsultan Oğuz Canpolat Anatolian High School in Istanbul, to protest the killing of 2 women, Ayşenur Hilal and İkbal Uzuner, by a man named Semih Çelik on October 7, 2024. It is reported that the police forced journalists and people coming to the commemoration out of the school.

(10/093) Union Member and Others Detained in Istanbul…

On October 7, 2024, at least 10 people including members of the Confederation of Public Employees Trade Union (KESK) were detained in house raids in Istanbul. It is learned that detainees are restricted from seeing their lawyers for 24 hours. The reason for detentions and names of the detainees could not be learned.

On 7 October 2024, Yusuf Eminoğlu, a member of the Eğitim Sen Diyarbakır branch, was detained in a house raid in Diyarbakır. The reason for the detention could not be learned.

On 7 October 2024, musicians Helim Ömerî and Azad Bedran were detained in house raids in Diyarbakır. The reason for the detentions could not be learned.

(10/096) Party Executives and Others Detained in Aydın…

7 people including Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Germencik district organization executives Görkem Özyürek and Sedanur Aydın and DEM Party Efeler district organization executive Helin Uçar, who were detained on October 4, 2024, in Aydın on the allegations of “being a member of an illegal organization” and “making propaganda for an illegal organization”, were released after statement procedures at the prosecutor’s office on October 7, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of 7 October 2024 that, the indictment of the Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office against journalist Onur Öncü, on the grounds of his comment on another journalist’s social media post ‘Dersimli actress Nihal Yalçın, who was trying to provoke the award ceremony and was gently reminded of the deadline by Tamer Karadağlı, answered “freedom for Selahattin Demirtaş” to the question “what would be the last tweet you would send”’, was accepted by Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 29. The indictment demands a sentence for Onur Öncü on the charge of ‘insult’.

(10/098) Constitutional Court Decision on the Killing of R.G…

It is learned from the news coverage of 8 October 2024 that, the Constitutional Court decided on the application on the case of R.G., who lost his life due to an explosion during a police operation in Şırnak on 23 July 2016, and ruled that R.G.’s right to life was violated and ruled to pay 200,000 TL non-pecuniary damages to the applicant. The court also decided to send a copy of the verdict to the Şırnak Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office for further investigation.

It is learned from the news coverage of 7 October 2024 that the LGBTI+ news website https://kaosgl.org was blocked from access via ‘family’ and ‘child’ profiles as of 18 September 2024, within the scope of ‘safe internet service’ provided by Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK).

It is learned from the news coverage of 7 October 2024 that, the news report titled ‘Companies that add dye to tea are announced’ on https://www.medyalaz.com website was banned from access by Rize Pazar Criminal Peace Judgeship on the grounds of violation of personal rights, on 7 October 2024.

On 7 October 2024, it is learned from the news coverage of October 7, 2024, that, 2 news reports about Green Crescent on https://www.birgun.net, and https://yurtsever.org.tr websites were banned from access by Istanbul Criminal Peace Judgeship No 2 on 7 October 2024.
