It is learned from the news coverage of July 31, 2024, that 1 militant died and 1 militant was detained in a clash between the security forces and HPG militants in the rural areas of the Nusaybin district of Mardin.
(08/002) Prisoner Who Lost His Life in Prison…
It is learned from the news coverage of August 1, 2024, that one of the prisoners Mehmet Sorkun (57, m) who was referred to hospital after being poisoned from the dinner given in Denizli Kocabaş D Type, T Type and Open Prison on July 22, 2024, died after being referred to hospital for the second time due to poisoning. It is also reported in the news that an investigation was initiated for Mehmet Sorkun’s death.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 31, 2024, that prisoners with health problems in Izmir Şakran Women’s Prison were taken to the infirmary only once in three months. It is also learned from the news coverage that Ebru Yiğit, Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) co-deputy chair in the same prison, was not referred to orthopedic service on the grounds of the soldier being tired, and a prisoner with migraine attack was not taken to prison infirmary.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 1, 2024, that prisoners in prisons across Turkey, who are arrested or convicted in relation to TKP/ML cases, went on a 5-day hunger strike demanding “closure of Type Y prisons, abolition of Administrative and Monitoring Boards and lifting restrictions on social and cultural rights”. It is not known how many prisoners are on hunger strike.

It is learned that the appeal made on August 1, 2024, to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by lawyers in order to visit their clients PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded.
(08/006) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Hakkari…
It is learned from the news coverage of August 1, 2024, that 8 people were detained in the Yüksekova district of Hakkari after an identity check on July 31, 2024. It is reported in the news that 8 people were not officially detained, and their relatives were not informed about the detention and they were subjected to torture and ill-treatment and then released in a place outside the city. It is also claimed that people were injured due to torture and ill-treatment.
A person named R. T. stated the following to the press regarding the torture and ill-treatment he was subjected to: “The police officers constantly insulted me and swore at me in the vehicle. Because I objected to the insults, I was hit on my head with a radio several times. After being beaten for hours, they took my friend U.Ş. into the vehicle. The police officers said, ‘You rest for a while and we will continue later’ and subjected U.Ş. to torture in the vehicle. Then I was left on the road to Şemzînan. My eardrum was damaged due to the beatings. I still have trouble hearing.”
U.Ş. stated the following: “I was beaten for hours. Cold water was poured on my head twice. I was taken out of the vehicle with blood coming from my nose and mouth. After they poured water on my face and cleaned the blood, they started beating me again. I was asked, ‘Where is Kurdistan? I told the police officers, ‘You know better.’ Then I was beaten again and again.”
(08/007) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment under Custody in Urfa…
It is learned from the news coverage of July 31, 2024, that Müslüm Güneş, who was detained in the Karaköprü district of Urfa for making a victory sign on social media, was subjected to torture and ill-treatment at the Urfa Provincial Security Directorate and was forced to sing “Ölürüm Türkiyem” song.
(08/008) Attack on a Coffee and Food Chain in Batman…
It is learned from the news coverage of July 31, 2024, that people gathered in central Batman to protest the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, attacked a café and a food chain in a shopping mall on Diyarbakır Street, causing material damage, and attempted to physically assault customers. It could not be learned whether anyone was injured in the attack.
(08/009) Protest Prevented by the Governorate of Istanbul…
It is learned from the news coverage of July 31, 2024, that national swimmer Alper Sunaçoğlu’s solo swim protest in Istanbul against the proposed amendment to the Animal Protection Law, which is on the agenda of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), was not allowed by the Governorate of Istanbul on the grounds that ‘necessary procedures were not fulfilled’.
(08/010) People Detained While Hanging Banners in Istanbul…
On July 31, 2024, the police intervened against Socialist Women’s Assemblies (SKM) members hanging a banner on a bridge in the Kadıköy district of Istanbul with the slogan “23 women were murdered in July, perpetrators are not stray animals” and detained 2 people (Leyla Can and Dilara Su Kalpak). It is learned that 2 people were released after statement procedures at the police on August 1, 2024, on the grounds of violating the Law on Misdemeanors.
(08/011) People Detained in Izmir…
On July 31, 2024, 6 people including Nilay Güleser, co-chair of Aegean Association of Relatives of Prisoners and Detainees (Aegean TUHAYDER), were detained through the investigation by Izmir Public Prosecutor’s Office on the grounds of ‘opposition to the Law on Prevention of Financing of Terrorism’ and ‘ being a member of an illegal organization’. It is learned that 4 people (Süreyya Gümüş, Ramazan Yavuz, Halime Badur and Hanım Sever) were detained by Izmir TEM Branch Directorate in house raids although there is no detention warrant for them, and were released after statement procedures at the police. It is also reported that Nilay Güleser and Dilaver Keklik are still under detention and there is a restriction order on the investigation file.
(08/012) Party and Association Executives and Others Detained in Van…
14 people, including Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Van Co-Chairs Veysi Dilekçi and Gülşen Kurt, who were detained in Van on July 30, 2024, on the allegations of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ were released on judicial control conditions.
Names of those detained: Osman Gerçekli, Munifer Koçak, Hazal Süer, Adem Onat, Ercan Erkol, Fazıl Numaş, Hanım Kaya, Veysi Dilekçi, Orhan Bayram, Selma Cintan, Tarık Artim, Gülşen Kurt, Ayşe Minaz and Aynur Sarıca.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 1, 2024, that Hatice Gevcan, former DEM Party district chair in the Dargeçit district of Mardin, was arrested and sent to prison on the grounds of the finalization of 6 years and 3 months sentence given to her in the case against her on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’.
(08/014) People Detained in Diyarbakır…
It is learned that 5 people were detained in house raids in the Dicle district of Diyarbakır on August 1, 2024, on the grounds of dancing halay to Kurdish music and were released by the criminal peace judgeship on judicial control conditions on the same day. The names of detainees could not be learned.
(08/015) Case Filed Against a Newspaper…
It is learned from the news coverage of August 1, 2024, that a lawsuit was filed against BirGün newspaper for the news article titled “550 million TL loan to mafia”, on the grounds of Halkbank’s complaint, at Istanbul Anadolu Commercial Court of First Instance No 6, demanding 1 million Turkish Liras compensation.
(08/016) Co-Mayor, Party Executives, City Councillors and Others Under Investigation in Şırnak…
It is learned that Şırnak Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against 13 people including DEM Party District Co-Chair Songül Erden and municipality council members on the grounds of singing a Kurdish march while protesting the police prevention of the march in Şırnak on June 30, 2024 against the decision of Ministry of Interior to appoint Hakkari Governor Ali Çelik as trustee in place of Mehmet Sıddık Akış, who was elected as Hakkari Co-Mayor on 31 March local elections.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 1, 2024, that the parliamentary question submitted by DEM Party Mardin MP Beritan Güneş, demanding an answer from the Minister of National Education on the banning of the Kurdish language in public spaces and the right to education in the mother tongue, was rejected by the Presidency of the Grand National Assembly on the grounds of “expressing a personal opinion”.
(08/018) Constitutional Court Decision on Can Atalay’s Dismissal from Parliament…
It is learned from the news coverage of August 1, 2024, that the Constitutional Court, which evaluated the individual applications on the revocation of parliamentary deputy of Can Atalay, Hatay MP of Workers’ Party of Turkey (TİP) on January 30, 2024, ruled that the revocation of Can Atalay’s parliamentary deputy is null and void.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 31, 2024, that the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) imposed administrative fines on the digital platforms Blu TV and MUBI on the grounds that the movie ‘Climax’ ‘violates the principles of public morality and protection of family structure’ and imposed a sanction of removal from the catalog. It is also reported in the news that the animated film ‘Sausage Party’ on the Netflix digital platform was also subjected to a sanction of removal from the catalog.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 31, 2024, that 1 social media post of economist Selçuk Geçer, who shared the list of big companies that do not pay tax, and 2 news reports on https://www.yenicaggazetesi.com.tr and https://haber.sol.org.tr/anasayfa are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights, by Istanbul Criminal Peace Judgeship No 5 on July 31, 2024.
(08/021) Detained People…
The Ministry of Interior announced on August 1, 2024, that 55 people were detained in operations conducted in 21 provinces in the last 4 days on the allegations of having a finalized prison sentence or a wanted record, communicating via payphones, or being a member of an illegal organization.
