(07/082) Prisoner Subjected to an Armed Attack in Prison…
It is learned from the news coverage of July 9, 2024, that, 5 people (M. O., M. A. Ç., M. Ü., E. C. Y. and F. Ç.) cut the wire fence in the yard of Elazığ Prison and entered the prison. It is learned that M. O. reached the wards and committed an armed assault against 1 prisoner named Murat Bulut. It is reported that Murat Bulut was wounded due to the armed attack and is under treatment in a hospital.
(07/083) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…
It is learned from the news coverage of July 9, 2024, that Mehmet Darga, a prisoner in Giresun Espiye L Type Prison, has been kept in a solitary room since February 2024, for participating in the hunger strike in prisons across Turkey demanding an end to the isolation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan and a democratic solution to the Kurdish issue. It is also learned that Mehmet Darga cannot meet his needs on his own due to health problems.
Hülya Darga, wife of Mehmet Darga, stated the following to the press: “My husband has been in prison for 32 years and his illnesses are very severe. In addition to his illnesses, his teeth fell out due to torture. He cannot meet his needs because he is kept in a single room. If there was someone with him, at least they would help him. He has a lot of difficulty alone”.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 8, 2024, that the restaurant of a Syrian refugee/asylum seeker in the Çumra district of Konya was attacked with stones by anonymous people and material damage occurred in the restaurant.
(07/085) Child Subjected to Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Mardin…
It is learned from the news coverage of July 9, 2024, that S. A. (15, m) was subjected to physical violence by the gendarmerie during a house raid in Eskihisar village of the Nusaybin district of Mardin.
Zekiye Aslan, who witnessed torture and other ill-treatment by the gendarmerie, stated the following to the press: “This is not humanity. They tortured a 15-year-old boy until blood flowed out of his mouth. Is this humanity? When we threw ourselves on top of them, they started hitting us too, they started swearing at us…”

It is learned from the news coverage of July 5, 2024, that Seher Şengünlü Yılmaz, chair of Alevi Cultural Associations (AKD), was arrested in Izmir and taken to Izmir Şakran Women’s Prison, on the grounds of a 3-day disciplinary prison sentence given to her on March 1, 2024, on the grounds of ‘violation of precautionary injunction’.

On July 9, 2024, the gendarmerie conducted house raids in the Eskihisar village of the Nusaybin district of Mardin and detained 3 people including 1 child. The reason for the detentions is unknown. Names of detained people are Gülperi Aslan, Nergiz Okan, S. A. (15, m).

On July 9, 2024, at least 19 people were detained in house raids in Istanbul and Sakarya on the allegations of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The detainees whose names are known are Saliha Gür, Ayşegül Sakallı, and Erhan İvrendi.
(07/089) People on Trial for the Killing of a Refugee Mine Worker in Zonguldak…
The trial of the case against 6 people, about the death of Vezir Mohammad Nourtani from Afghanistan, who was working in an illegal mine in Zonguldak and who was left to die by the mine owners, relatives, and 2 employees after he was seriously injured in a work accident on November 9, 2023, and then his body was cremated, continued on July 8, 2024, at Zonguldak Heavy Penal Court No 1. The court decided to continue the detention of 3 arrestees and adjourned the trial to September 18, 2024.
(07/090) Person on Trial for the Killing of Cihan Aymaz…
On July 8, 2024, the final trial of the case against Mehmet Caymaz, who killed musician Cihan Aymaz on May 2, 2023, for not playing the song ‘Ölürüm Türkiyem’, was held at Istanbul Anadolu Heavy Penal Court No 22. The court sentenced Mehmet Caymaz to life imprisonment for ‘intentional killing’.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 8, 2024, that the march of Eğitim-İş from National Sovereignty Park to the First Parliament building in Ankara on July 9, 2024, to protest the Law on Teaching Profession, which will be discussed in the General Assembly of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), was not allowed by the Governorate of Ankara on the grounds of ‘not being a designated march area within the scope of Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’.
