(06/174) Suspicious Police Death…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 24, 2024, that, Ş. A., a police officer on duty at Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) Protection Department, was found dead at his residence on June 24, 2024. The cause of death is reported as suicide.

(06/175) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 24, 2024, that 32 prisoners in Diyarbakır Prison Campus got poisoned from the dinner given on June 23, 2024, and were taken back to prison after treatment. It is also reported in the news that the food in the prison has been out of order for 10 days due to the Eid holiday and prisoners have health problems due to the food, there are frequent water cuts in the prison and the water is dirty when it is available.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 24, 2024, that 12 prisoners in Adana Kürkçüler T Type Prison No 1 were transferred to Adana Suluca Y Type Prison against their will on June 6, 2024. 12 prisoners, including ill prisoners and prisoners in need of nursing support were kept in single rooms, there were no refrigerators and fans in the rooms, and prisoners were only taken out to the courtyard for 1 hour a day. The names of the prisoners transferred are Hacı Alağaş, Mehmet Emin Ado, Necmettin Kıpçak, Vedat Bayram, Ümit Çakır, İmran Esmer, Mehmet Çağla, Hasan Şahin, Mustafa Özer, Erbil Ermeğan, Celal Ercan and Şehmus Mutlu.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 25, 2024, that the books sent to Kemal Yiğit, a prisoner in Rize L Type Prison in Kurdish, were not delivered to him on the grounds of ‘not being possible to provide enough translation for examination’.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 25, 2024, that prisoners Rojda and Leyla and Hatice Kaçmaz, whose last names are unknown, in Alanya L Type Prison were forced to ‘repentance’ by the Prison Administration and Observation Board, and that the release of prisoners who reject to do so was postponed.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 25, 2024, that Hatice Kaymak, a prisoner in Alanya L Type Prison, has completed her sentence but her release has been postponed for 2 years due to disciplinary penalties given by the prison administration and her refusal to repentance.

It is learned that the appeal made on June 25, 2024, to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by lawyers to visit their clients PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 24, 2024, that anonymous people attacked a coffee chain in a shopping mall in the Beşiktaş district of Istanbul. It is not known whether anyone was injured in the attack.

(06/178) Administrative Restriction on Co-Mayors’ Passports…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 24, 2024, that the passports of 9 co-mayors elected from Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) were issued with a precautionary order on the grounds of a ‘general security’ demand of the Directorate General of Security and that there is no court decision on the issue. The relevant governorates have notified the co-mayors about the injunctions.

Co-Mayors whose passports have been issued with an administrative injunction: Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Co-Mayor Serra Bucak, Dicle Co-Mayor Hacı Akengin, Kayapınar Co-Mayor Berivan Gülşen Sincar, Ergani Co-Mayor Şiyar Güldiken, Bağlar Co-Mayor Siraç Çelik, Çınar Co-Mayor Semra Akyüz, Silvan Co-Mayor Sevim Biçici, Artuklu Co-Mayor Mehmet Ali Amak, Akdeniz Co-Mayor Hoşyar Sarıyıldız.

(06/179) People Detained in Diyarbakır…

16 people who were detained on June 24, 2024, in connection with the attacks on the branches of a coffee chain in the Kayapınar district and a food chain in the Sur district of Diyarbakır and subjecting some customers to physical violence, were released on the same day, 1 of them on judicial control conditions.

(06/180) Former MPs on Trial…

The first trial of the case against former Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) MPs Hüda Kaya, Serpil Kemalbay, Fatma Kurtulan, Pero Dündar and Garo Paylan, for the Kobanê protests on October 6-8, 2014, started on June 25, 2024, at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 22. The court released Hüda Kaya on judicial control condition and adjourned the trial.

Hüda Kaya was arrested on November 1, 2023.

(06/181) Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The retrial of journalist İsmail Eskin started on June 25, 2024, at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 4 following the reversal of the sentence of 3 years 1 month and 15 days given to the journalist in 2017 on the allegation of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization through the press’ based on his social media posts about the curfews declared in 2015. The court adjourned the hearing to September 26, 2024.

The trial of the case against Abdullah Kaya, reporter of Dicle News Agency which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, was held at Ağrı Heavy Penal Court No 2 on June 25, 2024. The indictment demands a sentence for the journalist on the charges of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and ‘aiding an illegal organization’. The court adjourned the trial to September 24, 2024.

The trial of the case against Sezgin Kartal, reporter of Karşı Mahalle news portal, continued on June 25, 2024, at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 22. The court acquitted the journalist on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’.

Sezgin Kartal was detained on January 10, 2023, arrested on January 13, 2023 and released on June 22, 2023.

(06/184) Party Executive and Others on Trial in Şırnak…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 25, 2024, that Şırnak Penal Court of First Instance accepted the indictment against Süleyman Salğucak, DEM Party provincial co-chair Abdullah Güngen and Tufan Ertaş, for asking soldiers and police officers in Şırnak during the elections held on March 31, 2024, “Speak, where are you from?”. The indictment demands a sentence for 3 people on the charge of ‘preventing voters from entering the polling station or voting by using threats/force/violence’. The first hearing of the case will be held on October 8, 2024.

(06/185) Police Officer on Trial in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 24, 2024, that the first trial of the case against police officer E. Ç., about torture and ill-treatment of Grup Yorum member Bergün Varan during the police raid on İdil Cultural Center in the Okmeydanı district of Istanbul on May 30, 2017. The indictment demands a sentence for the police officer on the charge of ‘torture’. The court decided to hear an additional defense of defendant police officer E. Ç. on the charge of ‘intentional injury’ and adjourned the trial to November 22, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 24, 2024, that 2 content on https://www.karar.com and https://www.gazetepencere.com and 1 social media post about Demirören Holding and the increase in the exit fee for abroad were banned from access by Istanbul Küçükçekmece Criminal Peace Judgeship No 1 on June 24, 2024, on the grounds of violation of personal rights.
