Worker Health and Worker Safety Assembly (ISIG) announced on June 13, 2024, that at least 139 workers, including 3 women, 2 children, and 7 refugees, lost their lives at work in May 2024. Accordingly, the number of people who lost their lives in labor killings in the first 5 months of 2024 was at least 738.

It is learned that the appeal made on June 13, 2024, to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by lawyers to visit their clients PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 12, 2024, that Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Batman provincial executive Barış Avşar, who was at Batman Courthouse to support a detained person, was detained by physical violence without any warrant at the courthouse.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 12, 2024, that the police used physical violence to intervene against Izmir Metropolitan Municipality employees who wanted to attend the Metropolitan Municipality Assembly meeting to protest the decision to reduce social balance indemnities from 12 thousand Turkish Liras to 8 thousand Turkish Liras in collective bargaining negotiations, and that some employees were injured due to physical violence. It is reported that no one was detained during the intervention.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 12, 2024, that the police used rubber bullets to intervene against the march organized by Labour and Democracy Forces in the Sancaktepe district of Istanbul on June 3, 2024, against the Ministry of Interior’s decision to appoint Hakkari Governor Ali Çelik as trustee in place of Mehmet Sıddık Akış, who was elected as Hakkari co-mayor in March 31 local elections, and detained many people by using torture and ill-treatment. It is also reported that journalists were prevented from taking video footage. The total number of detainees and the names of detainees could not be learned.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 13, 2024, that 9 people who were arrested on May 17, 2024, after being detained in Izmir for participating in the protests in Izmir against the denial of the mandate of Abdullah Zeydan, co-mayor of Van Metropolitan Municipality from Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) on March 31, 2024 elections, were released on judicial control conditions.

The trial of the case against Dicle Müftüoğlu, co-chair of Dicle Fırat Journalists Association (DFG) and editor of Mezopotamya Agency (MA), continued on June 13, 2024, at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5. The prosecutor declared the final opinion on the case and demanded a sentence for the journalist on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The court rejected the request to lift judicial control measures against Dicle Müftüoğlu and adjourned the trial to October 24, 2024.
Dicle Müftüoğlu was arrested on May 3, 2023, and released on judicial control measures at the hearing of the case on February 29, 2024.

The trial of the case against İzel Sezer, Editor-in-Chief of İleri News, and Batuhan Batan, Managing Editor, for the news article titled “It was journalism on trial again”, upon the complaint of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s former lawyer, continued on June 13, 2024, at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 25. The prosecutor declared the final opinion on the case and demanded the acquittal of the journalists on the charges of ‘insult’ and ‘slander’. The court adjourned the hearing to December 17, 2024.

The trial of the case against journalists Pınar Gayıp, Eylem Nazlıer, Esra Soybir, Serpil Ünal, Serpil Ünal, Yadigar Aygün and Zeynep Kuray, who were detained during the police intervention against the press statement held in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on April 29, 2023, to protest the arrests of journalists in Diyarbakır and Ankara based investigations, continued on June 13, 2024, at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 22. The prosecutor declared the final opinion on the case and demanded a sentence for the journalists on the charge of ‘violating Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’. The court adjourned the trial to October 31, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 13, 2024, that Bakırköy Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against İsmail Arı on the charges of ‘insult’ and ‘slander’, upon the complaint of Kamil İnce, a member of All Industrialists’ and Businessmen’s Association (TÜMSİAD), for some expressions in the book titled “Menzil’in Kasası” written by journalist İsmail Arı and published by Tekin Publishing House.
(06/133) Co-Mayor Prevented from Traveling Abroad…
It is learned from the news coverage of June 13, 2024, that the passport of Gülşen Sincar, co-mayor of Diyarbakır Kayapınar Municipality, who went to Istanbul Airport to travel abroad, was seized and she was prevented from leaving the country on the grounds of “a record of cancellation/administrative decision by Ankara- NVİ on June 2, 2024, and an annotation in the description section of passport information, which constitutes a ban on traveling abroad”. It is also reported in the news that there is no investigation or case against Gülşen Sincar.
