(05/238) Person Who Lost His Life in Izmir…
It is learned from the news coverage of May 23, 2024, that an armed attack by a person named Evren Yiğit (43, m) in the Buca district of Izmir injured Kemal Altın, elected municipality council member from Justice and Development Party (AKP), and another person named Davut Orhan Fırat. It is reported that Evren Yiğit was wounded due to the gunshots opened by people who were reported to be plainclothes police officers and he died in hospital.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 24, 2024, that a prisoner (S. Ö.) in Manisa T Type Prison attempted suicide by setting his bed on fire in his single room on May 23, 2024, and was seriously wounded. It is also reported that 2 correction officers and 4 prisoners who were affected by smoke were taken to hospitals and 3 prisoners were taken to the prison infirmary for treatment.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 23, 2024, that Eren Odabaş, a prisoner in Marmara High-Security Prison No 1, who is reported to have cancer, has been prevented from access to treatment since February 9, 2024.

It is learned that the appeal made on May 24, 2024, to the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s family and tutelary along with the families and tutelary of Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded.

27 people, including Gazette Patika reporter Ali Kadir Güler and members of different political parties and initiatives, who were detained in house raids in Istanbul on May 21, 2024, on the grounds that they wanted to march from Saraçhane to Taksim during May 1 celebrations, were arrested by Istanbul Criminal Peace Judgeship at Istanbul Courthouse on May 23, 2024, on the allegations of ‘resisting to prevent duty’ and ‘violating Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’. With these arrests, the number of people arrested for May 1 became 74.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 24, 2024, that at least 7 people were detained in house raids in the Lice district of Diyarbakır. The reason for detentions is unknown. Detainees’ whose names could be learned are as follows: Yılmaz Şimşek, Mehmet Şimşek, Yusuf Şimşek, Abdullah Akdoğan, Abdurrahman Demirok.

The first hearing of the case against journalist Furkan Karabay, on the grounds of a social media post he made on November 2, 2023, upon the complaint of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s son Bilal Erdoğan, started on May 23, 2024 at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 45. The journalist is demanded to be sentenced for an ‘unjustified attack on personal rights’. The court adjourned the hearing to November 14, 2024.

The trial of the case against journalist Gözde Bedeloğlu for her article titled “Those who protect the state from yesterday to today” published in BirGün newspaper, based on the complaint of Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Gaziantep MP Sermet Atay, continued on May 24, 2024, at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 2. The indictment demands a sentence for the journalist on the charge of ‘insulting a public official for his duty’. The court adjourned the hearing to November 12, 2024.

The trial of the case against 15 people including Hakkari co-mayor Mehmet Sıddık Akış, continued on May 23, 2024, at Hakkari Heavy Penal Court No 1. The prosecutor declared his final opinion and demanded the separation of the cases against 2 people, 9 people including Mehmet Sıddık Akış be sentenced for ‘establishing and leading an illegal organization’ and 4 people be sentenced for ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The court adjourned the trial to June 5, 2024.

The first trial of the case against Eren Odabaş, executive of Pir Sultan Abdal Cultural Association (PSAKD) Gazi Şehitleri Cemevi, for the armed attack at Istanbul Çağlayan Courthouse on February 6, 2024, started on May 23, 2024 at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 26. The indictment demands a sentence for Eren Odabaş on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The court released Eren Odabaş on judicial control conditions and adjourned the trial to a later date.
Eren Odabaş was arrested on February 9, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 24, 2024, that Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office prepared an indictment against 8 people who were detained with torture and ill-treatment during the police intervention against Socialist Workers’ Party (SEP) members distributing leaflets for election campaigns in the Yüksel Street in Ankara on May 4, 2023, and Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 38 accepted the indictment. The indictment demands a sentence for 8 people on the charges of ‘violating Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’ and ‘damaging public property’.

The trial of the case against lawyer Mehmet Emin Aktar, former chair of Diyarbakır Bar Association, for sharing the minutes of the search conducted in his office, continued on May 23, 2024, at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5. The indictment demands a sentence for Mehmet Emin Aktar on the charge of ‘targeting people who took part in the fight against terrorism’. The court adjourned the trial to June 28, 2024.

The indictment demands a sentence for the lawyer on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The court decided to continue judicial control conditions on Adile Salman and adjourned the trial to October 3, 2024.

The final trial of the case against Gökhan Gündüz, a prisoner in Izmir Buca Kırıklar High Security Prison No 2, on the grounds of ‘insulting the President’ through a cartoon in a letter he sent to a friend, was held at Izmir Penal Court of First Instance No 40 on May 21, 2024. The court sentenced Gökhan Gündüz to 6 thousand Turkish Liras judicial fine.
It was also stated in the news reports that Gökhan Gündüz has been in prison for 31 years and his release was postponed on the grounds of the case in question, even though he has completed the execution of his life sentence, which corresponds to 30 years according to the law.

On May 23, 2024, the trial of the case against Lice Police Chief Aykut Oral and police officers İsmail Akkuş, Emre Özcan, Gökhan Bay and Hayrettin Çakmak, on the charges of ‘restriction of liberty’ in connection with the abduction and torture of a child named Y. D. (14, m) by police officers during Newroz celebrations in Diyarbakır in 2023, continued at Lice Penal Court of First Instance. The prosecutor declared the final opinion on the case and demanded a sentence for the defendants on the charges of ‘threatening liberty’ and ‘damaging property’. The court decided to continue judicial control conditions for the defendants and adjourned the trial to June 5, 2024.

The final trial of the case against police officers M. Y. and M. E. C. and neighborhood watcher U. O., about the death of Metin Sucu, one of the 2 people detained in Istanbul on May 25, 2023, in connection with the death of a 2-year-old baby in Çaycuma district of Zonguldak due to sexual assault, in the police vehicle that took him to Zonguldak, was held at Kocaeli Heavy Penal Court No 3 on May 22, 2024. The court sentenced the defendants to 18 years each on the charge of ‘killing due to injury causing fracture of bone in the body’ and 3 years each on the charge of ‘intentional injury’ against the other detainee A.G. and sentenced them to 21 years each.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 23, 2024, that Mardin Criminal Peace Judgeship No 1 imposed a publication ban on news reports about a Syrian child (16, k) who was subjected to physical violence and sexual assault and was injured in Mardin, by the decision on May 23, 2024.

The Ministry of Interior announced on May 24, 2024, that 45 people were detained in operations conducted in 18 provinces in the last 4 days.
