It is learned from the news coverage of May 14, 2024, that in Antalya Manavgat S Type Prison, some prisoners have to sleep on the floor due to overcapacity in some wards, there are queues in toilets and bathrooms and the food is not filling and sufficient.
It is learned from the news coverage of May 14, 2024, that Edirne L Type Prison has more prisoners than capacity, there are water cuts sometimes lasting for days, prisoners’ belongings sent from outside the prison are delivered late and male prisoners’ wards are searched with dogs.
It is learned from the news coverage of May 15, 2024i that Deniz Aytaç, a prisoner in Izmir Kırıklar F Type Prison was transferred to a prison in Antalya against his will on May 13, 2024.
(05/141) Police Intervention Against a Press Statement in Istanbul…
The police intervened against the press statement of TAYAD (Solidarity Association of Prisoners’ Families) in front of Istanbul Courthouse on May 15, 2024, demanding acceptance of the demands of Nurettin Kaya, who has been on a death fast for 209 days in Erzurum Dumlu Y Type Prison and detained 3 people. The names of the detainees are Dudu Kaya, Hasan Basri Yıldız, and Feridun Osmanağaoğlu.

Among the 55 people who were detained in house raids in Van on May 13, 2024, on the grounds of participating in the protests against the refusal to give the mandate to co-Mayor of Van Metropolitan Municipality Abdullah Zeydan, who was elected from Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) on March 31, 2024, 8 of them were arrested by the Criminal Peace Judgeship on May 15, 2024, on the charges of ‘resisting to prevent duty’, ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and ‘damaging public property’. 7 people were released on judicial control conditions. It is reported that the procedures of 40 people are still ongoing.
On May 15, 2024, at least 21 people including executives and members of Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) and executives of Marmara Association for Solidarity with Families of Prisoners and Detainees (MATUHAYDER) were detained in house raids in Istanbul for the same reason. It is learned that a 24-hour restriction of lawyer visitation is imposed on the case. The names of detained people whose names are known are Adil Gümüş, Fikri Baş, Zübeyir Taş, Vildan Doğan, Ünal Yusufoğlu, Alamettin Demir, Necla Aktay, Suat Yıldız, Ertan Hamitoğlu, Zübeyde Gülsüm, Suzan Gezici, Ahmet Altınışık, Bingüzel Ulu, Filiz Aydın, Yaşar Gökdemir.
On May 15, 2024, 16 people including members of Social Freedom Party (TÖP), Workers’ Party of Turkey (TİP), Sosyalist Mücadele Initiative, Yeni Demokrat Gençlik, Halkevleri were detained in house raids in Izmir for the same reason. The names of the detainees whose names are known are Erkan Gökber, Tuğçe Kızıldemir, Mehmet Kasar, Emine Akbaba, Berfin Büyükertaş, Arda Duvarcı, Azat Kunur, Elif Yerlikaya, Muhammet Arda Bulgan, Nilüfer Yıldız, Samet Sağnıç, Serdar Aktürk, Sezgin Zevkibol, Sude Timagur.

On May 15, 2024, DEM Party Döşemealtı district co-chair Fehmi Karakuş, Ahmet Refik Akarca and Derya Polat were detained in house raids in Antalya. The reason for detention could not be learned.

A person named Şerenaz Gezici was detained in a house raid in Van through an investigation initiated by Bitlis Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. The reason for detention could not be learned.

The hearing of the case against Mehmet Ferhat Çelik, Editor-in-Chief of Yeni Yaşam newspaper, and Osman Akın, Managing Editor, on charges of ‘slander’ and ‘insult’ based on a news article published in the newspaper about Serhat Albayrak, which was to be held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 2 on May 14, 2024, was adjourned to October 24, 2024 due to the judge’s leave of absence.

The final trial of the case against Azime Bozkurt, distributor of Yeni Yaşam newspaper, was held at Tunceli Heavy Penal Court No 2 on May 14, 2024. The court sentenced the newspaper worker to 2 years and 1 month on the charge of ‘aiding an illegal organization’.

The first trial of the case against lawyer Gurbet Özbey, a member of Lawyers’ Association for Freedom (ÖHD), started on May 14, 2024, at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5. The indictment demands a sentence for the lawyer on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The court adjourned the trial to September 12, 2024.

The trial of the case against 10 people on the grounds of the speeches made during the traditional ‘Cow Feast’ held at Ankara University Faculty of Political Sciences (SBF) in 2022, continued on May 14, 2024, at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 68. The indictment demands a sentence for 10 people on the charges of ‘publicly degrading religious values adopted by a section of the public’ and ‘insulting the President’. The court adjourned the hearing to September 26, 2024.

On May 10, 2024, Kayseri Heavy Penal Court No. 1 held the final hearing of the case against 7 people in relation to the physical violence against Kayseri Kocasinan District Municipality Assembly former member Sedat Kılınç and journalist Azim Deniz, who came to Deniz Postası TV channel to attend a program after resigning from Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) on April 8, 2022. The court sentenced 7 people to 11 years and 4 months each on the charges of ‘simple injury’, ‘violation of inviolability of workplace by using force or threat’, ‘damage to property’, ‘deprivation of liberty by force, threat or deception’ and ‘preventing the exercise of freedom of belief, thought and opinion in a chain’.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 15, 2024, that Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 13 rejected the request of Osman Kavala, who was sentenced to heavy life imprisonment in the Gezi Trial and whose sentence was approved by the Court of Cassation, through his lawyers, for a new trial in Gezi Trial.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 15, 2024, that DEM Party Kars MP Gülüstan Kılıç Koçyiğit’s demand for a draft bill on February 15, 2024, on the constitutional guarantee of education in the mother tongue and acceptance of Kurdish as mother tongue for Kurdish children, was not processed by the Directorate of Laws and Decisions of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey on the grounds of ‘unconstitutionality’.
