It is learned from the news coverage of May 8, 2024, that Gültekin Öztürk, who was hit by a police motorcycle while crossing the street in the Kayapınar district of Diyarbakır on May 6, 2024, lost his life in Gazi Yaşargil Training and Research Hospital.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 7, 2024, that journalist Esra Solin Dal, one of 9 journalists who were detained on April 23, 2024, in house raids through an investigation initiated in 2022, and who was arrested on April 26, 2024, on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and sent to Istanbul Bakırköy Women’s Prison, requested to be transferred from a single room to a room where she can stay with other prisoners, and was rejected by the prison administration on ‘security grounds’.
It is learned from the news coverage of May 7, 2024, that bullets were found in the food given to prisoners in the A-9 ward of Diyarbakır Women’s Prison and prisoners filed a criminal complaint to the prosecutor’s office and prison administration.
It is learned from the news coverage of May 7, 2024, that the problem of water cuts in Kütahya T Type Prison due to lack of mains connection to the prison building continues and prisoners have to meet their needs with water from the canteen due to water cuts.
It is learned from the news coverage of May 7, 2024, that Ali Koç, a prisoner in Karabük T Type Prison, who has been in prison for more than 31 years, was not released and his execution was postponed for 1 year on the grounds of not accepting remorse imposed by Prison Administration and Observation Board, and his execution was postponed once for 6 months and once for 3 months on the grounds of not being in ‘good behavior’, and that prison directors threatened political prisoners by saying “We will not give you a good behavior report under any circumstances. We will bury your execution”.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 8, 2024, that Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) district office in the Birecik district of Urfa was subjected to an armed attack and material damage occurred in the office. It is reported that 1 person named H.B., who was detained in relation to the incident, threatened DEM Party district executives through phone messages on May 7, 2024, and district executives who were subjected to threats filed a criminal complaint against H.B.

On May 8, 2024, 9 people were detained in house raids in Hakkari, on the grounds of participating in protests against the decision of Van Provincial Electoral Board to give the municipality’s executive license to Abdulahat Arvas, candidate of Justice and Development Party (AKP) who came second in the elections. It is learned that detained people were restricted from seeing their lawyers for 24 hours. Names of detained people are Barış Özdinç, Serhat Engin, Serkan Akdağ, Ferhat Çetin, Serkan Tan, Agit Kurt, Cahit Erdal, Mazlum Kurt and Ali Sönmez.

7 of 8 people (Derya Us, Nurcan Yalçın, Sema Koç, Fatma Opçin, Zuhal Ayaz, Muhammed Özer, Songül İpek) who were detained in house raids in Diyarbakır on May 6, 2024, on the grounds of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and ‘violating the law on prevention of financing of terrorism’ for sending money to prisoners through an investigation initiated in 2021, were released by the criminal peace judgeship on judicial control conditions on May 7, 2024.
Dilan Polat Dirin, who was detained through the same investigation, was released on May 6, 2024 on judicial control conditions.

On May 8, 2024, 3 people were detained in house raids in Antalya. The reason for the detentions could not be learned. The names of the detained people are Mehmet Çobaner, Mehmet Deniz and Fırat Eren.

On May 8, 2024, 8 people were detained in house raids in Eskişehir, on the grounds of slogans chanted during Newroz celebrations. The detainees were released the same day after statement procedures at the police. The names of the detainees are İbrahim Binici, Yusuf Çelik, Emrah Demirtaş, Tarık İbrahim Altun İbrahim Binici, Cihan Kaya, Doğukan Ali Yıldız, Serkan Şahin, İbrahim Matur.

On May 8, 2024, 6 people including 2 children were detained in house raids in Istanbul on the allegations of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’. Detained people were released the same day after statement procedures at the police. The names of the detainees could not be learned.
(05/073) The Case of Sinan Ateş…
It is learned from the news coverage of May 7, 2024, that Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 32 accepted the indictment of Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office against 22 people for the killing of Sinan Ateş, former chair of Ülkü Ocakları in Ankara on December 30, 2022. The indictment demands a sentence for 22 people on the charges of ‘premeditated murder’, ‘attempted murder’, ‘abetting a crime’, and ‘aiding a crime’. The court will set a date for the hearing.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 8, 2024, that the concert of the music group ‘Dolu Kadehi Ters Tut’, which was to be held at Gaziantep University Mavera Congress and Art Center on May 7, 2024, was targeted by Gaziantep Family Platform with phobic and discriminatory discourses, and the concert was moved to Şehitkamil Municipality Culture and Congress Center, and the concert there was canceled without any justification.
It is reported that the head of Gaziantep Youth Branch of Yeniden Refah Party (YRP) used discriminatory and phobic expressions such as ‘standing firm against perversion’ and ‘LGBT propaganda’ in his statements on May 7, 2024, on his social media account after the band’s concerts were banned.

On May 7, 2024, 19 people were detained in operations covering 11 cities through an Izmir based investigation and 38 people were detained in house raids in Istanbul.
On May 8, 2024, 15 people were detained in house raids in Ankara.
