It is learned that the appeal made on April 23, 2024, by lawyers in order to visit their clients PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded to by Bursa Public Prosecutor’s Office.
(04/160) Journalists Detained in Istanbul, Ankara, and Urfa…
On April 23, 2024, 9 journalists were detained in simultaneous house raids in Istanbul, Ankara and Urfa through an investigation launched in 2022. It is reported that 3 more people including 2 journalists are detained through the same investigation. It is learned that confidentiality of the investigation file and 24-hour restriction on lawyer visits are imposed.
Names of the detained journalists: Mezopotamya Agency (MA) reporter Esra Solin Dal, Yeni Yaşam Newspaper employee Enes Sezgin and journalists Saliha Aras, Yeşim Alıcı, Beste Argat Balcı, Şirin Ermiş, Erdoğan Alayumat (Istanbul); MA reporter Mehmet Aslan (Ankara); former MA reporter Doğan Kaynak (Urfa).

2 of 5 people (Emine Sürgeç, Eylem Sürgeç) who were detained in house raids in Tunceli Center and Nazimiye districts on April 22, 2023, were arrested by the Criminal Peace Judgeship on April 24, 2024, on the charges of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and ‘aiding an illegal organization’. 3 people [Makbule Nakış, Torun Dilsiz (71) and Özlem Dilsiz Çakmak] were released on judicial control conditions.

On April 22, 2024, a person named C. S. was detained on the allegations of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ during a house raid in Koçbeyi village of Şırnak Central district. C. S. was released by the Criminal Peace Judgeship on April 24, 2024, on judicial control conditions.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 22, 2024, that a person named Abdurrahim Akman was arrested after being detained in the Silopi district of Şırnak upon finalization of his sentence for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ and was taken to prison.

It is learned that Makbule Özer (81), who was arrested on May 9, 2022, in Van upon finalization of her sentence of 2 years and 6 months for ‘aiding an illegal organization’ and was released on September 7, 2022, upon postponement of her sentence, was re-arrested and taken to prison on April 22, 2024, upon a new report of Forensic Medicine Institution (ATK) Specialized Department No 3 stating that she “can stay in prison”.

On April 23, 2024, a person named R. K. who shouted “O Muslims, do not worship idols” during April 23 National Sovereignty and Children’s Day events in Kayseri was detained.

On April 22, 2024, 12 people who were arrested for participating in the protests in Yüksekova district of Hakkari against the decision of Van Provincial Election Board to grant the mandate to Abdulahat Arvas, the candidate of Justice and Development Party (AKP) who came second in the elections, were released after their appeal was accepted by Yüksekova Criminal Peace Judgeship.

On April 22, 2024, Urfa Criminal Court of First Instance accepted the indictment of Urfa Public Prosecutor’s Office against Emine Şenyaşar, whose husband Hacı Esvet Şenyaşar and sons Adil and Celal Şenyaşar were killed after a quarrel between Justice and Development Party (AKP) parliamentary candidate İbrahim Halil Yıldız and his bodyguards and shopkeepers in the Suruç district of Urfa on June 14, 2018, on the grounds of insulting the President in her statements during the justice watch protest. The first hearing of the case will be held on October 31, 2024.
