(03/187) A Child Subjected to Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Diyarbakır…
On March 20, 2024, E. E. (17, m) who was detained in Diyarbakır on the allegations of hitting a police car with a car he was driving without a license and causing injury to 1 police officer, was subjected to physical violence in the police car where he was detained and was wounded in the head. The Governorate of Diyarbakır announced that a judicial and administrative investigation is initiated.
(03/188) Interventions against Newroz Events…
On March 20, 2024, the police intervened against the march after the Newroz celebration in the Cizre district of Şırnak and detained 6 children by using physical violence.
15 people, including 7 children, who were detained on March 20, 2024, in the Viranşehir district of Urfa for allegedly carrying banners during the Newroz celebration were released after statement procedures at the police on the same day.
5 people who were detained after the Newroz celebration in the Tatvan district of Bitlis on March 20, 2024, were released after statement procedures at the police on the same day.
Through the investigation conducted by Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, at least 57 people, including 2 children, were detained in house raids on March 20 and 21, 2024 in Izmir, Ankara and Afyon, on the grounds of slogans they chanted, scarves they wore and social media posts they made during Newroz celebration in Izmir on March 17, 2024.

5 members of the DEM Party Youth Assembly who were detained in house raids in Muş on March 20, 2024, were released after statement procedures at the police on the same day. The names of the detainees and the reason for detention could not be learned.

On March 21, 2024, it is learned that a person named Y. B. who wanted to enter the rally organized by Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Isparta with a t-shirt saying “no justice in retirement, no vote reis” was detained.
It is learned from the news coverage of March 21, 2024, that banners and posters of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) in the Güneysu district of Rize were torn by an anonymous person or persons.

The final trial of the case against 11 former members of Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Central Executive Committee (MYK), on the grounds of violating Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK) with a statement on the Armenian Genocide in 2021, was held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 48 on March 21, 2024.
The court decided to separate the case of current DEM Party Co-Chair Tuncer Bakırhan, and sentenced Alp Altınörs, Celalettin Can, Emin Orhan, Hüseyin Taka, Naci Sönmez, Samet Mengüç, Sultan Güneş Özcan, Şaziye Köse, Veli Saçılık, and Mahfuz Güleryüz to 5 months each on the charge of ‘insulting the Turkish nation, the state of the Republic of Turkey, the institutions and organs of the state’.

The final trial of the case against former HDP Diyarbakır MP Çağlar Demirel, on the grounds of insulting the President, was held at Diyarbakır Penal Court of First Instance No 5 on March 21, 2024. The court acquitted Çağlar Demirel.

The trial of the lawsuit filed against Migration Monitoring Association (GÖÇİZ-DER) with the demand to close down the association continued on March 20, 2024, at Istanbul Bakırköy Civil Court of First Instance No 15. The court decided to request the publications of the association from Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office for examination and adjourned the hearing to June 26, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 20, 2024, that the news report on https://www.politikyol.com website about a hand gesture of AKP mayoral candidate to a person in Bandırma district of Balıkesir, is banned from access by Istanbul Anadolu Criminal Peace Judgeship No 3 on March 13, 2024.
It is learned from the news coverage of March 20, 2024, that news reports on https://www.yenicaggazetesi.com.tr, https://www.veryansintv.com, https://haber.sol.org.tr websites on the allegations of judicial interference in Tekirdağ Courthouse are banned from access by Tekirdağ Criminal Peace Judgeship No 1 on March 19, 2024.
