According to the “Male Violence Monitoring Report” published by Bianet on February 6, 2024, at least 28 women and 5 children were killed by men across Turkey in January 2024. It is also stated that men inflicted violence on at least 39 women, abused 5 children, and forced 39 women into sex work.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 7, 2024, that 2 militants died in a clash between the Turkish Armed Forces units and HPG militants in the Metina area of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (IKBY) on January 12, 2024.

The police intervened against the press statement of Özak Tekstil workers in front of a shopping mall in the Beylikdüzü district of Istanbul on February 7, 2024, to demand their labor rights and detained 23 people. It is learned from the news coverage of February 8, 2024, that detained people were released after the police intervened in the commemoration event organized by the Confederation of Revolutionary Unions (DISK), Confederation of Public Employees’ Unions (KESK), Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects (TMMOB) and Turkish Medical Association (TTB) in Beşiktaş district of Istanbul on February 6, 2024.

On February 8, 2024, United Revolutionary Party Party Assembly (PM) member Mehmet Fırat Ekmen, Social Freedom Party (TÖP) Central Coordination member Rozana Urkun, TÖP member Berfin Büyükertaş and Socialist Movement Initiative for Struggle member Tuğçe Kızıldemir were detained in house raids in Izmir on the grounds of social media posts. Mehmet Fırat Ekmen and Tuğçe Kızıldemir were released by the Criminal Peace Judgeship on judicial control conditions, while Rozana Urkun and Berfin Büyükertaş were released the same day after statement procedures.

The first trial of the case against 87 members and executives of Workers’ Party of Turkey (TİP) who were detained under torture and ill-treatment while protesting the sale of tents by Red Crescent in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on February 26, 2023, after the earthquakes on February 6, 2023, started on February 8, 2024, at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 44. The indictment demands a sentence for 87 people on the charge of ‘violating Law No 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’. Following the defenses, the court adjourned the hearing to September 11, 2024.

The trial of the case against journalists Rojin Akın and Emrah Erdoğan on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ continued on February 7, 2024, at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 23. Rojin Akın and Emrah Erdoğan did not attend the hearing. The court decided to continue judicial control condition on Rojin Akın and to wait for the execution of the arrest warrant on Emrah Erdoğan and adjourned the trial to April 3, 2024.

The indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office against journalist Fatih Altaylı based on a social media post was accepted by the Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 21 on February 7, 2024. The indictment demands the journalist be sentenced for ‘praising offense and offender’.

The trial of the case against journalist Pınar Gayıp, editor of Etkin News Agency (ETHA) and Mehmet Acettin, co-owner of the news agency, for a news article published on the agency’s website, continued on February 8, 2024, at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 2. The indictment demands a sentence for the journalists on the charge of ‘publicly degrading the State of the Republic of Turkey’ under Article 301/1 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK). The court adjourned the hearing to March 28, 2024.

The trial of the case against journalist Barış Pehlivan and Mustafa Büyüksipahi, former Editorial Coordinator of Cumhuriyet Newspaper, for a news report they made, continued on February 8, 2024, at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 19. The indictment demands a sentence for the journalists on the charge of ‘insulting a public official’. Presenting his final opinion on the case, the prosecutor demanded the punishment of Barış Pehlivan and the acquittal of Mustafa Büyüksipahi. The court adjourned the hearing to June 4, 2024.

The trial of the case against 23 Tevgera Jinên Azad (TJA) activists including 1 arrestee, continued on February 7, 2024, at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 25. The indictment demands a sentence for defendants on the charges of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and ‘being an executive of an illegal organization’. The court decided to continue the detention of Zeynep Boğa and adjourned the trial to April 30, 2024.

The trial of the case against climate and energy expert Önder Algedik, on the grounds of a post about Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), continued on February 8, 2024, at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 24. The indictment demands Önder Algedik be sentenced for ‘publicly disseminating misleading information’. The court acquitted Önder Algedik.

On February 8, 2024, Izmir Heavy Penal Court No 16 accepted the indictment prepared by Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office against Mehmet Şerif Çelik about the death of Syrian citizen Muhammed Yasir Elati and the injury of Hussin Dhımesh in Konak district of Izmir on August 1, 2023. The indictment demands a sentence for Mehmet Şerif Çelik on the charges of ‘intentional killing’ and ‘attempted killing’. The first hearing of the case will be held on March 12, 2024.

On February 8, 2024, the Constitutional Court decided on the individual application made on December 12, 2022, regarding the access ban imposed by Ankara Criminal Peace Judgeship No. 4 on November 4, 2022, on the video on the drug problem in Turkey, in which former Republican People’s Party (CHP) Chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu appeared on October 31, 2022, together with Hacer Foggo, advisor to the CHP Poverty Solidarity Office, and ruled that the access ban was a violation of freedom of expression.

Governorate of Diyarbakır announced on February 7, 2024, that all events such as demonstrations, marches, press statements, hunger strikes, sit-in protests, rallies, opening stands, setting up tents, distributing leaflets, hanging banners, etc. are banned for 8 days between February 8, 2024 and February 15, 2024.
