(02/053) Labor Killings…

Worker Health and Worker Safety Assembly (ISIG) announced on February 7, 2024, that at least 158 workers, including 5 women, 7 children, and 3 migrants/refugees, lost their lives while working in January 2024.

(02/054) Police Intervention Against a Commemoration in Istanbul…

On February 6, 2024, the police intervened against the commemoration event organized by the Confederation of Revolutionary Unions (DISK), Confederation of Public Employees’ Unions (KESK), Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects (TMMOB), and Turkish Medical Association (TTB) for the anniversary of February 6, 2023 earthquake in Beşiktaş district of Istanbul, and detained at least 5 people. The names of detained people are unknown.

(02/055) People Detained in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 7, 2024, that 90 people were detained in raids to at least 25 addresses including İdil Cultural Center and People’s Law Office in Istanbul on February 6 and 7, 2024, through the investigation of the armed attack at Istanbul Çağlayan Courthouse on February 6, 2024. It is reported that detainees are subjected to a 24-hour restriction on lawyers. The names of detained people are as follows Lawyers Betül Vangölü Kozağaçlı, Didem Baydar Ünsal, Seda Şaraldı, Berrak Çağlar, Ali Sinan Çağlar, Şimal Deniz, Ayten Öztürk and Selma Demir, Özlem Balkı, Arif Pelit, Kemal Gün and Savaş Taş, Burcu Delen, Mercan Kanat, Yüksel Doğan, Gökhan Uysal and Ali Gürbüz, Dilan Poyraz, Barış Yüksel, Fırat Kaya, Bergün Varan and Merve Kurt, Selda Özçelik, Meryem Özsöğüt and Merve Demirel, Bahar Kurt Kızılaltun, Dr. Barış Kaya, Mehmet Yücetepe, Lerzan Caner Conde and Seval Eyi

(02/056) Party Executive and Others Detained in Diyarbakır…

On February 6, 2024, Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Dicle district co-chair Mehmet Taşkın, Kadir Babür, Yusuf Yıldız and Ömer Çetin were detained in house raids in Dicle district of Diyarbakır on the grounds of social media posts. 4 people were released the same day after statement procedures at District Gendarmerie Station.

(02/057) HDP Former MP on Trial…

The trial of the case against Semra Güzel, former Diyarbakır MP of Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) who was detained on September 2, 2022, after her impunity was lifted, and was arrested by the court on September 3, 2022, continued on February 7, 2024, at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 22. The court decided to continue the detention of Semra Güzel and adjourned the trial to April 25, 2024.

(02/058) Former Co-Mayor on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The retrial of the case against Filiz Buluttekin, former co-mayor of Sur district of Diyarbakır, who was replaced by a trustee, continued on February 7, 2024, at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 11, after Diyarbakır Regional Court of Appeals Penal Department No 2 overturned the 7 years and 6 months imprisonment sentence given to her on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The prosecutor declared the final opinion and demanded a sentence for Filiz Buluttekin on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The court adjourned the trial to April 29, 2024.

(02/059) Police Officer on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The acquittal verdict of police officer K. B. on the killing of paper collector Recep Hantaş by police fire on April 14, 2019, on Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 7, was reversed by Penal Department No 1 of Diyarbakır Regional Court of Appeals on October 20, 2023; and the retrial of the case at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 7 started on February 6, 2024. The indictment demands a sentence for police officer K. B. on the charge of ‘causing death with conscious negligence’. The court adjourned the trial to May 21, 2024.

(02/060) Journalist on Trial in Bitlis…

The trial of the case against journalist Mehmet Şah Oruç was held at Bitlis Heavy Penal Court No 2 on February 6, 2024. The indictment demands a sentence for the journalist on the charges of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’. Following the defenses, the court adjourned the trial to May 14, 2024.

Mehmet Şah Oruç was arrested on April 27, 2023, and released on October 31, 2023, on judicial control condition.

(02/061) Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against journalist Remzi Akkaya was held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5 on February 6, 2024. The indictment demands Remzi Akkaya be sentenced for ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The court decided to continue the detention of Remzi Akkaya and adjourned the trial to March 26, 2024.

Remzi Akkaya was detained on April 25, 2023, and arrested by the court on April 27, 2023.

(02/062) Journalist on Trial in Hakkari…

The first trial of the case against journalist Nimet Ölmez on charges of insulting Justice and Development Party (AKP) Hakkari Provincial Chair Zeydin Kaya in a social media post, started on February 6, 2024, at Hakkari Penal Court of First Instance No 1. The court adjourned the hearing to April 24, 2024.

(02/063) Journalist on Trial in Maraş…

The trial of the case against journalist Fırat Bulut for his news reports on the earthquake continued on February 7, 2024, at Maraş Elbistan Penal Court of First Instance No 2. The indictment demands a sentence for the journalist on the charge of ‘publicly disseminating misleading information’. Fırat Bulut, who is abroad, did not attend the hearing. The court adjourned the hearing to February 22, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 7, 2024, that Bingöl Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against journalist Fırat Bulut on the grounds of ‘publicly disseminating misleading information’ through a social media post.

The first hearing of the case against Veli Saçılık for a post criticizing the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) regarding the earthquakes that occurred on February 6, 2023, started on February 6, 2024, at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 10. The indictment demands a sentence for Veli Saçılık on the charge of ‘publicly disseminating misleading information’. Following the defenses, the court adjourned the hearing to May 23, 2024.

(02/066) Medical Doctor on Trial in Istanbul…

The first trial of the case against Dr. Yusuf Eryazğan, President of Şanlıurfa Family Physicians Association (ŞUAHED), started on February 6, 2024, at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 32, on the grounds of his statements on a TV show where he stated that there were problems in the supply of some vaccines. The indictment demands a sentence for Yusuf Eryazğan on the charge of ‘publicly disseminating misleading information’. The court adjourned the hearing to July 4, 2024.

(02/067) Indictment Prepared against a Person in Istanbul…

Istanbul Anadolu Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office prepared an indictment against Melisa Yaren Aydınalp, who marched in the Kadıköy district of Istanbul on December 10, 2023, with a banner reading “Freedom to boobs!”. The indictment demands a jail sentence from 6 months to 1 year for Melisa Yaren Aydınalp on the charge of ‘committing indecent acts’.

Melisa Yaren Aydınalp was detained through the investigation launched against her on December 19, 2023, and was released by the court on judicial control condition.

(02/068) Ban of Access to Web Content…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 7, 2024, that Erzurum Criminal Peace Judgeship No 2 banned access to news reports on 10 websites about an academic from Ağrı İbrahim Çeçen University making racist comments on the Roboski Massacre, on the grounds of ‘violation of personal rights’.

 (02/069) People Detained and Arrested in Relation with the Coup Attempt…

On February 7, 2024, 10 people were detained in operations conducted in 9 cities through an Izmir-based investigation.
