On January 1, 2024, a person named Y.E.Ş. was wounded when the police opened fire in Ankara for disobeying the stop warning. The Minister of Interior made the following statement on the issue: “Tonight at 23.30, a 29-year-old man named Y.E.Ş. with a backpack, who made suspicious movements and ran towards our police on patrol on Vekâletler Caddesi, did not obey the stop warning and was wounded by our security forces. The person was taken to hospital. During the investigation, it was determined that the person was reported missing by his family on December 11, 2023, and that he was undergoing psychological treatment. The public will be informed about the developments”.

It is learned that the appeal made on January 2, 2024, to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, and Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in Imralı Prison, to visit them was not responded to.

On December 31, 2023, 2 members of Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Parti) Youth Assembly (Mücahit Kılıç, Serhat Yıldız) were detained in house raids in Muş. The reason of detention is unknown.

9 people who were detained on December 26, 2023, in Manisa due to social media posts and whose detention periods were extended, were referred to the court on December 29, 2023. The court decided to arrest 7 people and released 2 people on judicial control condition. The reason for the arrest could not be learned. The names of the arrested people are Murat Gür, Fırat Bahadır, Servet Güneş, Behiye Müsavar, Abdülhakim Sezgin, Agit Haru and a person named Umut whose surname is unknown.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 29, 2023 that, Ruşen F. who was detained in Erzurum on December 26, 2023 and was released by Erzurum Hınıs Penal Court of Peace on December 27, 2023, on the condition of sharing Turkish flag photos on her social media accounts every day, was lifted upon the objection of lawyers.

The trial of the case against 2 gendarmerie personnel (S. Ö. and S. A.) regarding the torture and ill-treatment of Osman Kale continued on December 27, 2023 at Tokat Erbağ Penal Court of First Instance No 1. The indictment demands a sentence for the defendant gendarmerie personnel on the charge of ‘intentional injury’. The defendants attended the hearing and made their defense. The court adjourned the trial to February 21, 2024.
