In the framework of the 54th session of the Human Rights Council, the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT), the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT), Human Rights Foundation of Turkey and Human Rights Association are pleased to invite you to a hybrid side-event focusing on the issues of enforced disappearances and arbitrary detentions in Turkey, which will take place on Tuesday 19 September 2023 from 3.00 to 4.00pm (CEST), Room XXV in Palais des Nations, Geneva.
The event will feature several civil society representatives from Turkey who will address the worrying increase in enforced disappearances since 2016 in the country, marking the declaration of state of emergency after the coup attempt. Drawing upon the emblematic case of Saturday Mothers/People – who advocates for truth and justice by asking about the fate of their forcibly disappeared relatives with peaceful vigils -, panellists will share their struggles under the current laws and practices limiting their freedom of assembly and of association. This event will also provide an opportunity to elaborate on recommendations on how to protect the civic space in Turkey and how to bring these issues on the UN agenda.
You can also follow the event online by clicking here.
We are looking forward to seeing you there!
