(03/048) Male Violence Monitoring Report…

According to the “Male Violence Monitoring Report” of Bianet published on March 3, 2023, at least 11 women got killed by men in February 2023. It is also reported that at least 40 women were subjected to violence, 1 woman was harassed, 1 woman was raped, and 2 children were abused by men in February 2023.

(03/049) Labour Killings…

On March 3, 2023, the Worker Health and Worker Safety Council (ISIG) revealed that at least 119 workers including 9 women, 1 child and 8 migrant workers died while working in January, 2023. It is reported that at least 182 workers including 21 women, 4 migrant workers died while working in February, 2023. 301 workers died in labour killings in the first two months of 2022.

(03/050) Earthquakes in Antep and Maraş…

According to the information recorded by Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute, on February 6, 2023, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 in Şehitkamil district of Antep which struck at 04:17 local time and an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 in Ekinözü district of Maraş which struck at 13:24 local time killed at least 45,968 people as of March 4, 2023.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 4, 2023 that, the prisoners in Antep Islahiye T Type Prison which was damaged in the earthquake, were not being transferred to other prisons despite of their demands.

It is learned from the news coverage that, the number of contractors, including Nurdağı district mayor Ökkeş Kavak, who were arrested for their responsibility in the buildings collapsed in Antep and Maraş earthquakes is 247 as of March 5, 2023.

(03/051) Torture and Ill-Treatment Under Custody in Urfa…

It is learned from the statement of Urfa Bar Association Human Rights Center on March 4, 2023 that, 2 of 7 people (Mehmet Samur and Adle Samur) who were detained in Karacurun hamlet of Suruç district of Urfa on March 2, 2023 were subjected to torture and ill-treatment under custody.

(03/052) Racist Attack in Bursa…

On March 5, 2023, numerous racist attacks took place in Bursa, before the Bursaspor-Amedspor match in front of the hotel where Amedspor players were staying, during and after the match. It is learned from the news reports that, foreign substances were thrown on the field, hateful slogans were shouted, posters of Mahmut Yıldırım an intelligent informant and using the code name “Yeşil”, and “White Taurus car” symbolizing torture and ill-treatment, enforced disappearance and unsolved murders in the 1990s, were held during the match, the team members who tried to leave the field were physically attacked after the match. Amedspor chair Selahattin Yıldırım stated to the press that 4 players and 3 managers received reports of assault. Bursa Governorate’s Office made the following statement on the same day: “Concerning the events in today’s match; 3 security managers who were responsible were dismissed and an investigation was launched against them. Legal action has been initiated against the persons involved in the using of banners, and against the persons responsible for the assault that took place in the locker room at the end of the match under the coordination of the Chief Public Prosecutor. In this context, 7 people have been detained so far.” It is learned that the number of people detained increased to 10 as of March 6, 2023.

(03/053) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on March 3, 2023 to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by families and tutelary of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, and Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in Imralı Prison, in order to visit them was not responded.

(03/054) Preventions and Interventions Against 8 March International Women’s Day Events…

The police intervened in the press declaration on the grounds of the slogans calling the government to resign, which was held in Sakarya Street in Ankara on March 5, 2023, organized by We Will Stop Femicide Platform and Women’s Assemblies as part of 8 March International Women’s Day events; and detained at least 5 people. It is learned that the police prevented journalists from recording the intervention.

(03/055) Detained People in Urfa…

2 of 7 people (Mehmet Samur and Adle Samur) who were detained in Karacurun hamlet of Suruç district of Urfa on March 2, 2023, were arrested by the court on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ on March 5, 2023. 2 people (Reşat Yıldız and Bozan Demir) were released after statement procedures at the prosecutor’s office while 3 people were released by the court on judicial control conditions.

(03/056) Detained People in Tunceli…

2 people (Neriman Dönmez and Erkan Gül) who were detained on the grounds of ‘aiding an illegal organisation member’ in house raids in Tunceli on March 1, 2023 were arrested by the court on March 4, 2023.

(03/057) Prosecutions and Detentions for Social Media Posts…

The General Directorate of Security announced that prosecutions were initiated against 615 people and 152 people were detained, 29 people were arrested for their social media posts about the earthquakes in Antep and Maraş, as of March 5, 2023.

(03/058) Journalists on Trial in Konya…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 6, 2023 that the indictment of Konya Public Prosecutor’s Office against Mezopotamya News Agency reporter Fırat Can Arslan and Jinnews reporter Dilan Babat, who were detained as he were reporting on the funeral in Gölyazı village of Cihanbeyli district of Konya on October 13, 2022; held for Jineology Research Center member and Jineology magazine editor Nagihan Akarsel who was shot in Sulaymaniyah in the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on October 3, 2022; was accepted. The first trial of the case against Fırat Can Arslan and Dilan Babat on the charge of ‘targeting officials who took part in the fight against terrorism’ at Konya Heavy Penal Court No. 2 on May 25, 2023.

(03/059) Ban of Events in Osmaniye…

Osmaniye Governorate’s Office made a declaration on March 3, 2023 and announced that all assemblies, open door meetings, meetings and demonstrations, press declarations, opening tents and stands, sit-in protests, collecting petitions, commemorations, hanging banners and posters, distributing leaflets and so on; and the entrance to the city for those who came to participate in such events are banned for 15 days as of March 3, 2023; on the grounds of criticisms after the earthquakes and 8 March International Women’s Day.

(03/060) Ban of Access to Web Contents…

It is learned that the news reports about the public tenders in former Trade Minister Ruhsar Pekcan’s term, published on https://www.gercekgundem.com/, https://www.aykiri.com.tr/ and https://www.yurtgazetesi.com.tr/ websites are banned to access on the grounds of personal rights by the Access Providers’ Association on March 3, 2023.

It is learned that the news reports about the tenders of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) municipalities in Tuzla and Pendik districts of Istanbul, published on https://www.birgun.net/, https://www.sozcu.com.tr/ and https://artigercek.com/ websites are banned to access on the grounds of personal rights by Bursa Penal Court of Peace No. 1 on March 3, 2023.
