(10/100) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of 8 October 2024 that, Cem Dursun, a prisoner in Izmir Kırıklar F Type Prison No 1, was asked by the prison administration to pay 150,000 Turkish Liras to attend the funeral of his father who lost his life.

(10/101) Prisoner Whose Release Was Postponed by the Prison Administration and Observation Board…

It is learned from the news coverage of 9 October 2024 that, the release of Serdar Şitilay, a prisoner in Elazığ High Security Prison No 1, who completed 30 years of his life sentence on 5 April 2023, was postponed for the fourth time by Prison Administration and Observation Board (CİGK) for 6 months on the grounds of ‘not being able to integrate with the society after his release’.

(10/102) Co-Mayor and Others Detained in Siirt…

On 9 October 2024, in house raids in the Kurtalan district of Siirt, co-mayor Sadiye Aktin, Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) district co-chair Saliha Sak, Democratic Regions Party (DBP) district co-chair Sultan Yorulmaz, Kurtalan Municipality Assembly member Mehpare Yeşilbaş and 1 person named Gülbahar İvdil were detained on the grounds of a family visit. While 4 of 5 detainees (Sadiye Aktin, Saliha Sak, Mehpare Yeşilbaş, and Gülbahar İvdil) were released after statement procedures at the police on 9 October 2024, Sultan Yorulmaz was released on judicial control conditions by the criminal peace judgeship on the same date.

(10/103) People Detained in Mardin…

On October 8, 2024, 22 people were detained in house raids in Mardin on the allegations of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ through social media posts. Some of the detainees were released after statement procedures at the police on 9 October 2024, and some of them were released after statement procedures at the prosecutor’s office on the same date. The detainees whose names could be learned are as follows: Aynur Bulut, Halime Sümer, and lawyer Medeni Ayhan.

(10/104) Mayor of Istanbul on Trial…

The lawsuit filed by Anadolu Agency against Ekrem İmamoğlu, the mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, at Istanbul Büyükçekmece Civil Court of First Instance No 4 with a claim of 100,000 TRY for compensation for his statements was held on 8 October 2024. The court decided to dismiss the lawsuit.

(10/105) The Özgür Gündem Case…

The retrial of the case against Human Rights Association (IHD) Co-Chair Eren Keskin, Hüseyin Aykol, Ayşe Batumlu Kaya, and Reyhan Çapan, for the articles published in Özgür Gündem newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, continued on October 8, 2024, at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 14. The indictment demands a sentence for 4 people on the charges of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ and ‘ inciting the public to commit an offense’. The court adjourned the trial to 19 December 2024.

(10/106) Party Executive and Others on Trial in Şırnak…

On 8 October 2024, the first trial of the case against Süleyman Salğucak, DEM Party provincial co-chair Abdullah Güngen and Tufan Ertaş, who asked the question ‘Speak, where are you from?’ to the voters in Şırnak during the elections held on 31 March 2024, started to be held at Şırnak Penal Court of First Instance No 1. The indictment demands a sentence for 3 people on the charge of ‘preventing voters from entering the polling station or voting by using threats/force/violence’. After defense hearings, the court adjourned the trial to 12 November 2024.

It is learned that the rally of the DEM Party in Diyarbakır on October 13, 2024, was banned by the Governorate of Diyarbakır on October 9, 2024.

(10/108) Banned Events and Demonstrations…

The Governorate of Diyarbakır announced on 9 October 2024 that demonstrations, press statements, hunger strikes, sit-in protests, rallies, opening stands, setting up tents, distributing leaflets, hanging banners, and similar events and activities and the entry, passage, and exit of persons and vehicles that are considered to have come from other provinces to participate in these protests or to pass to other provinces by using the borders of this province, the exit of persons and vehicles that are considered to participate in these protests from the outer districts of Diyarbakır and the entry into the provincial center have been banned for 5 days.

(10/109) Ban of Access to Web Content…

It is learned that the news report titled ‘Qatari company’s partner is from Turkey’ on https://bianet.org website was banned from access by Istanbul Criminal Peace Judgeship No 5 on 8 October 2024 on the grounds of violation of personal rights, and the content was ordered to be deleted.

It is learned that 4 internet addresses and applications related to the social media platform Discord were banned from access by Ankara Criminal Peace Judgeship No 1 on 9 October 2024.
