(05/076) Male Violence Monitoring Report…

According to the “Male Violence Monitoring Report” published by Bianet on May 8, 2024, at least 30 women and 2 children were killed by men across Turkey in April 2024. It was also stated that men inflicted violence on at least 33 women, harassed 10 women, abused 20 children, and forced 20 women to sex work.

(05/077) Person Subjected to Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Ankara…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 8, 2024, that a person named T. K. who was waiting at a bus stop in the Çankaya district of Ankara, was detained by the police using physical violence while checking his identity card, and that physical and verbal violence continued after detention.

T.K. stated the following to the press: “While I was waiting at the bus stop, police officers came up to me and asked me to do a background check (GBT). I gave my ID card for the GBT, but the police asked me ‘Where are you from’. ‘ I asked them what where I was from had to do with the background check. I told them that if they wanted to do a background check, I gave them my ID. Then the police became more aggressive and said, ‘I asked a question, you will answer it. Get against that wall, I will search your bag. When I objected to them searching my bag and my clothes, they started to threaten me with things like ‘I will crush you here, I will bury you here’ (…) Then, when I moved to a less visible place, they once again repeated things like ‘Face the wall, we will search you’. When I shouted to expose myself, they called more police. There were around 10 police officers and they tried to put me on the ground and handcuff me behind my back, they started to step on my head, they started kicking me, and handcuffed me behind my back. Then I was taken to the police car with handcuffs behind my back and there the torture with kicks and fists continued. Afterward, I was subjected to sexist swearing that could amount to harassment.”

(05/078) Police Intervention against a Protest in Istanbul…

On May 8, 2028, the police intervened against the press statement about Nurettin Kaya, who is on death fast in prison, in front of Istanbul Çağlayan Courthouse and detained 2 people (Feridun Osmanağaoğlu and Hasan Basri Yıldız) by using physical violence. 2 people were released after statement procedures.

(05/079) Police Intervention against a Protest in Ankara…

The march of a group of prisoners’ families, rights organizations and representatives of political parties from the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) to the Ministry of Justice in Ankara on May 8, 2024, demanding an end to the isolation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan and a democratic solution to the Kurdish issue, was prevented by the police. Upon the police prevention, a press statement was held in front of the Çankaya gate of the Parliament. It is learned that the police prevented the opening of banners during the press statement.

(05/080) Party Executive, Members and Others Detained in Urfa…

15 of 17 people including 2 children who were detained on May 7, 2024 in Urfa, including Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Bozova District Executive and Youth Assembly members, were referred to the court on May 8, 2024. 7 people (Muzaffer Akcan, Kemal Çakmak, Nuh Albayrak Kemal Aslan, Sergen Doğan, Mehmet Emin Çakmak and Yaşar Korkmaz) were released after statement procedures at the prosecutor’s office. 8 people (Leylan Dağhan, Şirin Aktaş, Bünyamin Demir, Hüseyin Arslan, Meyaser Korkmaz, Serhat İçlek, İsmail Topkan and Aziz Taşkın) were released by the criminal peace judgeship on judicial control conditions. 2 detained children (M. E. A. and M. A.) were released after statement procedures at the police on May 7, 2024.

(05/081) Former Co-Mayor on Trial in Diyarbakır…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 8, 2024, that the Diyarbakır Regional Court of Appeals upheld the 1-year jail sentence given to Seyit Narin, former co-mayor of Sur district of Diyarbakır, for ‘using the title of co-mayor’ in the case at Diyarbakır Penal Court of First Instance No 13, on the charge of ‘abuse of office’. It is reported that Seyit Narin was arrested and sent to prison.

(05/082) Former City Council Member on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The retrial of the case against Şehriban Zuğurli, a former member of Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Assembly, on the charges of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and ‘resisting to prevent duty’, was continued on May 8, 2024 after Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 10 overturned the sentence of 7 years 9 months and 22 days in total. The court adjourned the hearing to May 28, 2024.

(05/083) People on Trial for Press Statement on Afrin Operation…

The final hearing of the case against Peoples’ Democratic Congress (HDK) co-spokesperson Onur Hamzaoğlu, Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) deputy chair Fadime Çelebi, Socialist Re-Liberation Party (SYKP) Co-Chair Ahmet Kaya, Greens and Left Future Party Co-Chairs Naci Sönmez and Özlem Eylem Tuncaeli, Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Co-Chair Hacer Özdemir and Mehmet Arslan, for the press statement made by HDP, HDK and DTK representatives on February 4, 2018, on Turkish Armed Forces’ (TSK) operation to Afrin, was held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 29. The indictment demands a sentence for 7 people on the charges of ‘ inciting the public to hatred and hostility’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’. The court acquitted 6 people and separated the case against Mehmet Arslan.

Fadime Çelebi and Onur Hamzaoğlu were arrested on February 17, 2018, and were released on the trial held on July 21, 2018.

(05/084) Journalist on Trial in Bitlis…

The trial of the case against journalist Sinan Aygül, who is also the president of Bitlis Journalists’ Association, started on May 8, 2024, at Bitlis Tatvan Penal Court of First Instance No 1, following the objection to the sentence of 2 months and 5 days of imprisonment given by Tatvan Penal Court of First Instance No 1 on the charge of ‘insult’ based on his remarks about the mayor’s bodyguards who attacked him. The court adjourned the hearing to June 5, 2024.

On June 17, 2023, Sinan Aygül was subjected to physical violence by two bodyguards of Tatvan Mayor Mehmet Emin Geylani, one of whom was a police officer, following his news reports on corruption and irregularities in Tatvan Municipality in Bitlis.

(05/085) Artist on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against artist Ferhat Tunç for his social media posts continued on May 7, 2024, at Istanbul Büyükçekmece Penal Court of First Instance No 14. The indictment demands a sentence for Ferhat Tunç on the charges of ”inciting or insulting the public to hatred and hostility” and ”insulting the President”. The court adjourned the hearing to January 21, 2025.
