(05/061) Operations and Attacks…

The Ministry of National Defence announced that 1 soldier (Mehmet Sevim) died in a weapon accident in İdlib area of Syria on May 7, 2023.

(05/062) May 14, 2023 General Elections…

It is learned that 15 people were detained in relation to the attack on May 7, 2023 on the rally of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) in Erzurum with stones which injured 17 people. Detainees were released by the court provided that 14 of them will be on judicial control conditions on May 8, 2023.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 8, 2023 that, the Labour Party (EMEP) members who were distributing leaflets in front of a tea factory in Fındıklı district of Rize were called to gendarmerie station to give official statement.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 8, 2023 that, CHP’s posters in Urfa were removed by anonymous person or persons.

It is learned that the election campaign vehicle of the ATA Alliance was attacked and damaged by anonymous person or persons in Silvan district of Diyarbakır on May 8, 2023.

On May 8, 2023, a group of people alleged to be the Justice and Development Party (AKP) members attacked on a coffee house in Izmir where CHP posters were hung. It is learned that nobody was injured and 5 people were detained in relation to the attack.

It is learned that a group attacked the Greens and Left Future Party (YSP) campaign stand in Gümüşhacıköy district of Amasya on May 8, 2023. It is learned that nobody was injured in the attack.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 9, 2023 that, Turkey has denied accreditation as election observers to Danish parliamentarian Soren Sondergaard and Swedish parliamentarian Kadir Kasirga, who had been appointed as members of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly’s election observation mission to the 14 May general elections, did not grant permission to travel.

(05/063) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 9, 2023 that, the Free Women’s Movement (TJA) spokesperson and former Nusaybin district mayor Ayşe Gökkan was kept in handcuffs for hours during hospital transfer from Ankara Sincan Women’s Prison, and was injured at the wrists due to that. It is also stated that Ayşe Gökkan was taken back to prison without being treated.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 9, 2023 that, in Edirne L Type Prison which was opened recently, the prisoners were not given drinking water for a week.

(05/064) Journalist and Other People on trial in Ankara…

The first trial of the case against 24 people including Jinnews reporter Öznur Değer, who were detained by the police intervening in the press declaration held in Ankara on November 28, 2021; is held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No. 18 on May 8, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for 24 people on the charges of ‘resisting to prevent duty’ and ‘participating in unlawful meetings and marches unarmed and not dispersing despite the warning’. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to July 10, 2023.

(05/065) Journalist on Trial in Ankara…

The final trial of the case against journalist Gökhan Yavuzel, on the grounds of ‘inciting hatred and hostility in public’ over his article titled “The relationship of art and power”, is held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No. 7 on May 8, 2023. The court acquitted Gökhan Yavuzel.

(05/066) Former DBP Co-Chair, Journalist and Other People on Trial in Batman…

The trial of the case against 28 people including the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) former co-chair and former deputy Sebahat Tuncel and Jiyan News grant holder İdris Yayla, on the grounds of the protest against trustee appointments to the municipalities in 2016, is held at Batman Penal court of First Instance No. 1 on May 9, 2023. The court decided to separate the case against 3 people and adjourned the trial to June 22, 2023.

(05/067) People on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 13 people including 2 journalists for a protest held in front of Istanbul Bakırköy Women’s Prison on May 10, 2019; is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 23 on May 8, 2023. The court adjourned the trial to July 13, 2023.

The final trial of the case against a person named V. M. on the grounds of ‘insult’ by a social media post reading “Hope it sticks in your throat, you thieves” regarding the Presidency’s Director of Communications, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 35 on May 8, 2023. The court decided to acquit V. M.

(05/069) Hande Buse Şeker Case…

Police officer Volkan Hicret has been sentenced to life imprisonment and 20 years by Izmir Heavy Penal Court No 4, on the grounds of sexually assaulting and killing trans woman Hande Buse Şeker in Izmir on January 9, 2019. As the local court’s verdict was reversed by Izmir Regional Court, the retrial of the case is held on May 8, 2023. The court adjourned the trial to July 19, 2023.

(05/070) Cancelled Concert in Rize…

It is learned that the concert of musicians Selçuk Balcı and Korhan Özyıldız to be held on May 9, 2023 in Rize was banned by the Governorate’s Office on May 8, 2023.

(05/071) Ban of Access to Web Contents…

It is learned that the news reports about the jail sentence given to journalist Bülent Mumay, published on www.dw.com/tr, https://www.birgun.net and a social media post about it, are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Istanbul Penal Court of Peace No. 9 on May 8, 2023.

It is learned that the news reports about the allegations that AKP Karaman Youth Branch chair punched a police officer, published on https://www.sozcu.com.tr, https://www.gazeteduvar.com.tr, https://t24.com.tr websites are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Karaman Penal Court of Peace on May 8, 2023.

It is learned that 2 social media posts shared by Ali Yeşildağ, are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Istanbul Küçükçekmece Penal Court of Peace No. 3 on May 6, 2023.

It is learned that the social media account “Ali Yeşildağ” is banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Istanbul Küçükçekmece Penal Court of Peace No. 6 on May 8, 2023.

(05/072) Earthquakes in Antep and Maraş…

The Minister of Family and Social Services made a statement on May 8, 2023 and declared that a total of 1,914 unaccompanied children were registered in the system, 1,823 of them were identified and given to their families, 22 children were in the hospital, 58 children were in the institutions of the ministry, and 2 children could not be identified.
