(03/078) Operations and Attacks…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 9, 2023 that, 2 militants died in a clash between HPG militants and security forces on December 24, 2023 and 1 militant died in a clash on March 1, 2023 in the rural areas of Tunceli.

(03/079) Earthquakes in Antep and Maraş…

The Minister of Family and Social Services made a statement on March 8, 2023 and declared that a total of 1,915 unaccompanied children were registered in the system, 1,649 of them were identified and given to their families, 174 children were in the hospital, 92 children were in the institutions of the ministry, and 78 children could not be identified.

It is learned from the news coverage that, the number of contractors, including Nurdağı district mayor Ökkeş Kavak, who were arrested for their responsibility in the buildings collapsed in Antep and Maraş earthquakes is 269 as of March 9, 2023.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 8, 2023 that, the tents of 9 Syrian families in Elbistan district of Maraş were removed by the security forces under coercion and the families were taken elsewhere.

The General Directorate of Security announced that prosecutions were initiated against 651 people and 157 people were detained, 29 people were arrested for their social media posts about the earthquakes in Antep and Maraş, as of March 9, 2023.

(03/082) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 9, 2023 that, 2 people (Mehmet Samur and Adle Samur) who were detained in Suruç district of Urfa and were arrested later, were subjected to forcibly strip search in Urfa Prison No. 1 and 2.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 9, 2023 that, the Socialist Youth Associations’ Federation (SGDF) member Umut Polat who was detained during relief activities in Antep and was arrested afterwards, was subjected to strip search at Antep E Type Prison.

It is claimed in the news reports on March 8, 2023 that, a prison named Ahmet Kaya who suffers from a broken rib as a result of torture and ill-treatment that he was subjected to in Van High Security Prison was asked to pay 250,000 Turkish Liras for the surgery in Ankara.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 8, 2023 that, the prisoners who reject mouth search in Balıkesir Bandırma Prison were not referred to hospital.

(03/084) Preventions and Interventions Against 8 March Events…

The police prevented the march to be held in Kayapınar district of Diyarbakır for 8 March International Women’s Day. It is learned that the group had a sit-in protest upon prevention.

It is learned that the subway stations in Taksim were closed as of 14.00 on March 8, 2023, on the grounds of Feminist Night March to be held in Beyoğlu district of Istanbul; and that the police prevented those who wanted to participate in the march. It is reported that the police prevented those gathering in Cihangir to march to Kabataş and used pepper spray to intervene and detained 26 people. It is learned that 22 people were released on the same day and 4 people were still under custody.

It is learned that 1 person named Sevde Ünal was detained after the Feminist Night March in Izmir, on the grounds of carrying a banner reading “Murderer Erdoğan”. It is learned that the police used pepper spray to intervene in those protesting the detention. Detained person was released on the same day. It is learned that the prosecutor called this person for statement on March 9, 2023 and she was released by the court with a ban on leaving the country on the same day.

(03/085) Detained Journalists in Istanbul…

ANKA agency reporter Gaye Şeyma Can and Gazete Yolculuk reporter Buse Söğütlü were detained by the police as they were reporting in the Feminist Night March in Beyoğlu district of Istanbul on March 8, 2023. Gaye Şeyma Can was released on the same day, it is learned that Buse Söğütlü was still under custody.

Musician Ali Baran is detained at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport on March 9, 2023, through an investigation against him on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

(03/087) Journalist on Trial in Aydın…

The trial of the case against journalist Yağmur Kaya, upon the complaint of retired soldier Musa Çitil over the interview she made with the Human Rights Association co-chair Eren Keskin, is held at Aydın Heavy Penal Court No. 2 on March 9, 2023. The indictment demands sentence on the charge of ‘targeting public officials who took part in the fight against terrorism’. Yağmur Kaya did not attend the trial, the court adjourned the trial to June 1, 2023.

(03/088) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against journalist Metin Cihan over a news report, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 22 on March 9, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Metin Cihan on the charge of ‘illegally obtaining or disseminating personal data’. Metin Cihan did not attend the trial, the court adjourned the trial to April 28, 2023.

(03/089) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

It is learned that the indictment of Istanbul Anadolu Public Prosecutor’s Office against journalist Sedef Kabaş on the grounds of insulting the President in social media, is accepted by Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 2 on March 9, 2023. The first trial of the case will be held on June 22, 2023.

(03/090) Co-Mayor on Trial in Şırnak…

The first trial of the case against Adalet Fidan Fındık, the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) co-mayor of Silopi district of Şırnak, on the grounds of a press declaration she participated in is held at Silopi Penal Court of First Instance on March 8, 2023. Adalet Fidan Fındık attended the trial and made defence. The court adjourned the trial to March 14, 2023.

(03/091) Attack on Party Office in Karaman…

It is learned that anonymous person or persons attacked on the provincial office of the Felicity Party in Karaman on March 9, 2023. It is learned that the office was damaged in the attack.

(03/092) Administrative Fine for TV and Radio Channels…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 8, 2023 that the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTUK) issued Flash Haber TV channel for the expressions of theologian Cemil Kılıç regarding the earthquakes, with broadcast ban for 3 times and with administrative fine for 3 times, and issued Haber Türk TV channel with administrative fine for 3 times.

(03/093) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

It is learned that 11 people were detained in operations covering 2 cities through an Istanbul based investigation on March 9, 2023.
