(03/070) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 8, 2022 that prisoners in Afyon T Type Prison were subjected to physical violence of the correction officers and were threatened by them saying “You cannot speak Kurdish. We are the state here; we will cut your head off”.

(03/071) Hunger Strike in Prison…

It is learned that the hunger strike of prisoners demanding an end to right violations in Mardin E Type Prison which started on February 21, 2022, ended on March 8, 2022 as their demands were accepted.

(03/072) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on March 8, 2022 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan in order to visit him was not responded.

(03/073) Preventions and Interventions to 8 March Events…

The police detained 38 people in Kadıköy district who gathered to participate in the Feminist Night March in Istiklal Street of Beyoğlu district of Istanbul on March 8, 2022. Detained people are released on the same day.

The police used pepper spray and rubber bullets to intervene in the Feminist Night March. It is learned that the march was held despite the intervention.

The police intervened the Feminist Night March in Izmir, it is reported that numerous people including lawyers were subjected to physical violence of the police. It is learned that 1 child was detained and was released on the same day.

The police used pepper spray to intervene in the Feminist Night March in Antalya and detained at least 30 people including lawyers. Detained people are released on March 9, 2022.

The police used physical violence to intervene in the Feminist Night March in Adana. It is learned that the group held a press declaration in front of police barricades.

The police detained 9 people including Safiye Akdağ, presenter of the 8 March demonstration in Diyarbakır. Detained people are released on the same day.

The police intervened the press declaration of Şişli Municipality workers in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) on March 8, 2022 and forced people away from the building by using physical violence.

(03/075) Detained Journalist in Elazığ…

Journalist Sultan Eylem Keleş is detained at Elazığ Airport on March 9, 2022, on the grounds of lack of her statement through an investigation. Sultan Eylem Keleş is released after statement procedures on the same day.

(03/076) CHP Executive on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against CHP Üsküdar district chair Suat Özçağdaş, on the grounds of taking pictures of Presidential Communications Director Fahrettin Altun’s house, is held at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 17 on March 8, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to April 20, 2022.

(03/077) Homeland Party Chair on Trial…

The trial of the case against the Homeland Party chair Muharrem Ince, on the charge of ‘insulting the President’ in a speech he gave in 2016, is held at Uşak Penal Court of First Instance No 3 on March 7, 2022.

The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and sentence for Muharrem İnce from 4 years up to 8 years. The court adjourned the trial to March 28, 2022.

(03/078) Journalist and Other People on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 7 people including journalist Şehriban Alkış, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 23 on March 8, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to June 9, 2022. 7 people have been detained by the police intervening the press declaration outside of the Provincial Directorate of Family Labour and Social Services in Istanbul to protest Turkey’s withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention.

(03/079) Child on Trial for ‘Insulting the President’ in Istanbul…

The first trial of the case against a 14-year-old child (T. A.) on the grounds of insulting the President by social media posts is held at Istanbul Anadolu Juvenile Court No 2 on March 8, 2022. The court decided to acquit T. A. at the first trial.

(03/080) Removal of Posters in Van…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 9, 2022 that, the posters reading “Istanbul Convention Keeps Alive” and “Implement the Law No 6284” which were posted by Van-Hakkari Medical Chamber for 8 March International Women’s Day on the billboards in Van, are removed on the grounds that “the governorate’s office is disturbed”.

(03/081) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 130 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 37,407 as of March 8, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 95,811 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 14,425,719 as of March 8, 2022.
