On June 8, 2023, the Worker Health and Worker Safety Council (ISIG) revealed that at least 145 workers including 15 women, 6 children and 6 migrant workers died while working in May, 2023. 730 workers including 61 women, 11 children and 37 migrant workers died in labour killings in the first five months of 2023.

It is learned that Muhammed İsmail Karaağaç, a student of the Turkish Military Academy, fell ill during his training in Isparta on June 8, 2023 and died in the hospital where he was taken.
(06/089) Torture and Ill-Treatment of Child in Diyarbakır…
It is learned from the news coverage of June 8, 2023 that, a 16-year-old child (M. K.) was subjected to physical violence of the police and was handcuffed behind their back at Diyarbakır Courthouse on June 6, 2023. Diyarbakır Bar Association stated the following: “Despite the fact that the victim child did not show any resistance during the arrest and detention at the courthouse, the child was subjected to violence by being slapped in the face by the police officer (…) The victim child, who was taken to the police station handcuffed behind the back, entered the courthouse on 7 June 2023 at 11:20 a.m. taken to the prosecutor’s office. Silvan Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office demanded the arrest of the victim child and the Silvan Criminal Judgeship of Peace decided to arrest the victim child”.

It is learned that the appeal made on June 8, 2023 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.

It is learned that Müşerref Geçer and Emrah Kılıç, the HDP co-mayors of Patnos district of Ağrı and the HR Director of the municipality Uğur Laçin were detained on June 9, 2023. The reason for detention could not be learned.

4 people (P. K. A., C. A., H. B. and A. Ç.) who were detained through an investigation in Aydın on June 6, 2023, were released by the court with a ban on leaving the country on June 8, 2023.

On June 8, 2023, 8 people were detained in house raids in Antalya, on the grounds of sending money to prisoners. Detained people are: Fatma Gün, Emine Tekmenuray, Zekiye Alak, Hülya Ayık, Hüzna Göksel, Ayşe Arslan, Valide Kaplan and Emine Arslan. Detained people were released after statement procedures at the prosecutor’s office on June 9, 2023.

It is learned that 1 person (Rewşen Gürün) was detained in a house raid in Nusaybin district of Mardin on June 8, 2023. The reason for detention could not be learned.
(06/096) Police Intervention to Protest in Ankara…
The police intervened in the press declaration of the lawyers in front of Ankara Courthouse on June 8, 2023 to protest that Can Atalay, Hatay MP of the Workers’ Party of Turkey (TIP), was not released despite being elected as a deputy. It was learned that the lawyers were subjected to physical violence by the police during the intervention which was on the grounds of the instruction of the chief prosecutor’s office.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 8, 2023 that, the Pride March at the Middle East Technical University (METU) campus to be held as a part of the Pride Month was banned by the rectorate. It is also stated in the news reports that phobic posters targeting LGBTI+s were held in several parts of the university campus.

It is learned that the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Youth Assembly member Dilan Karakoç was detained in a house raid in Menemen district of Izmir on June 8, 2023. The reason for detention could not be learned.

The final trial of the case against Sendika.org reporter Derya Saadet, over the social media post about the case against the father of Deniz Poyraz who was killed in the racist attack against the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Izmir office; is held at Izmir Heavy Penal Court No. 18 on June 8, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Derya Saadet on the charges of ‘insult’ and ‘targeting anti-terror officials’. The court acquitted Derya Saadet.

The trial of the case against Evrim Kepenek, over her news reports about a person on trial for child abuse, is held at Izmir Selçuk Penal Court of First Instance on June 8, 2023. The court adjourned the trial to October 10, 2023.

The trial of the case against 108 members and executives of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) including former co-chairs, including 18 arrestees, is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 22 on June 7-9, 2023. The court rejected to release arrested politicians, to lift the judicial control on the others. The court decided to send a writ to the Grand National Assembly for the demand of ending the proceedings against Sırrı Süreyya Önder who was elected as Istanbul deputy of the Greens and Left Future Party and adjourned the trial to July 3, 2023.

The trial of the case against 8 people who were detained by the police intervening in the Pride March in Eskişehir on July 3, 2022, is held at Eskişehir Penal Court of First Instance No. 4 on July 8, 2023. The court adjourned the trial to June 15, 2023.

The final trial of the case against Emine Şenyaşar, on the grounds of insulting İbrahim Yıldız in her statements at the “Justice Watch” protests that she holds in front of the Urfa Courthouse, is held at Urfa Penal Court of First Instance No. 5 on June 8, 2023. The court sentenced Emine Şenyaşar to a judicial fine of 8,000 Turkish Liras on the charge of ‘insulting a public officer’. On June 14, 2018, Justice and Development Party Urfa MP candidate İbrahim Halil Yıldız and his personal guards had a quarrel with shopkeepers in Suruç district of Urfa which resulted in death of Emine Şenyaşar’s husband Hacı Esved Şenyaşar and her sons Adil and Celal Şenyaşar.

The first trial of the case against HDP central executive board member İdil Uğurlu, PEace Mother Behiye Yalçın, Selma Demir, Hayat İzgi and Newroz Çelik is held at Izmir Heavy Penal Court No. 20 on June 8, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for 5 people on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. After defence hearings the court decided to release 5 people and adjourned the trial.

The final trial of the case against Professor Süleyman Büyükberber, former rector of Gazi University, is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 28 on June 8, 2023. The court sentenced the defendant to 3 years and 9 months on the charge of ‘aiding an illegal organisation’.

Diyarbakır Governorate’s Office made a declaration on June 7, 2023 and announced the Dergan hamlet east area in Lice district as special security zone and banned entrance without permission for June 7-22, 2023.
