(07/088) Attack on Turkish Journalist in Germany…

Turkish journalist Erk Acarer is subjected to an attack in his house in Berlin, Germany on July 7, 2021. It is learned that Erk Acarer got injured at the face and body.

Erk Acarer stated the following on the attack: “I was attacked by three persons in the outer court of the building I live in. One of the attackers were shouting ‘You will not write’. They could not use their guns because there were many people witnessing the attack.”

(07/089) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 8, 2021 that, the letter of Diyarbakır co-mayor Selçuk Mızraklı to Yeni Yaşam newspaper for an interview he responded in Kayseri Bünyan T Type Prison No 2, was censored by the prison administration.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 8, 2021 that, phone call and visit rights of the prisoners who tested positive for Covid-19 were restricted.

(07/090) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on July 8, 2021 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s lawyers in order to visit their client was not responded.

(07/091) Police Intervention to Workers’ Protest in Ankara…

The march of miners from Soma district of Manisa to Ankara for their compensation rights was prevented by the police stopping them at the city entrance. The miners’ march to the Grand National Assembly on July 8, 2021 is also prevented by the police. It is learned that workers continued their sit-in protest upon prevention.

(07/092) Gendarmerie Intervention to a Protest in Mardin…

The gendarmerie used pepper spray and fired up into the air to intervene people protesting Dicle Electricity Distribution personnel removing the main transformers which provides electricity for watering wells in Anıtlı rural neighbourhood of Derik district of Mardin on July 8, 2021. It is learned that nobody was detained.

(07/093) HDP Executive on Trial in Van…

The trial of the case against the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Party Assembly member Fırat Keser is held at Van Heavy Penal Court No 2 on July 8, 2021.

Fırat Keser joined the trial from prison via sound and vision system. After defence hearings the court decided to continue detention of Fırat Keser and adjourned the trial to September 10, 2021.

(07/094) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against Cem Şimşek, former executive editor of Evrensel newspaper, on the grounds of insulting the President in a news report “German cartoonists sketched Erdoğan badly”, is held at Bakırköy Penal Court of First Instance No 27 on July 8, 2021.

The court sentenced Cem Şimşek to 11 months and 20 days on the charge of ‘insulting the President’ and postponed the sentence.

(07/095) Union Executive on Trial in Izmir…

The final trial of the case against Shipbuilding and Maritime Transportation, Warehouse and Storage Workers’ Union (Limter-İş) organising expert Deniz Bakır is held at Izmir Heavy Penal Court No 27 on July 8, 2021.

Deniz Bakır joined the trial via sound and vision system from prison. After defence hearings the court sentenced Deniz Bakır to 7 years and 6 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and decided to release him on verdict.

Deniz Bakır was detained on January 14, 2021 and was arrested by the court on January 17, 2021.

(07/096) Medeni Yıldırım Case…

The final trial of the case against Adem Çiftçi, a soldier on compulsory military service, for death of Medeni Yıldırım in Lice district of Diyarbakır on June 28, 2018, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 7 on July 8, 2021. Medeni Yıldırım was killed with a shot fired from military station during a march to protest the construction of a high security military station in Kalecik village of Lice.

The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded acquittal of Adem Çiftçi. The court ruled acquittal of Adem Çiftçi.

(07/097) Prison Massacre Case…

The trial of the case against 196 people who were on duty at Gendarmerie General Command during “Operation Back to Life”, which caused death of 12 people and injury of 29 in Bayrampaşa Prison, is held on Bakırköy Heavy Penal Court No 13 on July 8, 2021. The operation which killed 32 people in 20 prisons in total was conducted to enable conversion of the prisons to F Type prisons and to end hunger strikes in prisons on December 19, 2000.

The court decided to call Ali Aydın, head of the Gendarmerie General Command Public Security Department for testimony via sound and vision system on an unannounced day and adjourned the trial to December 9, 2021.

(07/098) Security Staff on Trial on the Charge of Sexual Assault in Van…

The final trial of the case against 2 security staff (İ. H. K. and Y. V.) of Kurubaş Repatriation Center of Provincial Directorate of Migration Management in Van, on the charge of sexual assault to an Iranian woman Z. M., is held at Van Heavy Penal Court No 1 on July 8, 2021.

The court sentenced 2 defendants to 15 years each on the charge of ‘aggravated sexual assault’ and decided to continue detention of 2 people.

(07/099) People on Trial for Attacking Journalist Can Dündar…

The final trial of the case against Murat Şahin, for the armed attack to journalist Can Dündar is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 28 on July 8, 2021. Murat Şahin has carried an armed attack to Can Dündar in front of Istanbul Courthouse in Çağlayan on May 6, 2016 and has wounded journalist Yağız Şenkal. The court sentenced Murat Şahin to 3 years and 15 days and a penalty fine of 500 Turkish Liras on the charges of ‘threat with the use of a weapon’, ‘intentional injury’, and ‘possession of unregistered firearm’ and deferred the announcement of the verdict.

It is learned that the news reports about the Minister of National Education, published on https://www.cumhuriyet.com.tr, https://odatv4.comhttps://www.yenicaggazetesi.com.tr websites are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Ankara Batı Penal Court of Peace No 7 on July 7, 2021.

(07/101) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On July 8, 2021, 4 people are detained in Edirne in an alleged attempt to illegally cross to Greece and 1 person is detained in Ankara.

(07/102) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 48 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 5,171 as of July 8, 2021.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 50,096 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 5,465,094 as of July 8, 2021.
