(01/034) Prisoners whose Release was Adjourned by the Prison Administration and Observation Board…
On January 8, 2026, it is learned from the news coverage of January 8, 2026 that, the release of 2 prisoners in Karabük T Type Prison, Hacı Aslan and Ali Alkoç, who completed their life sentences, has been adjourned (6 months for Hacı Aslan and 11 months for Ali Alkoç) by the decision of Prison Administration and Observation Board (CİGK). It is reported that Ali Alkoç’s release was adjourned 5 times before and Hacı Aslan’s release was adjourned 2 times.
(01/035) Police Intervention to Protests in Istanbul and Şırnak…
The police prevented the participants from dispersing in groups after the press declaration of Democratic Institutions Platform at Şişhane Square in Beyoğlu district of Istanbul on January 8, 2026, about the attacks on Kurdish neighbourhoods in Aleppo city of Syria; and intervened the groups on the grounds of slogans shouted and detained 25 people.
The police intervened the protest for the same cause in Cizre district of Şırnak on January 8, 2026 and detained at least 3 people by using physical violence.

The trial of the case against Swedish citizen journalist Joakim Medin continued on January 8, 2026 at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 13. The indictment demands sentence for Joakim Medin on the charges of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’. The court decided to wait for the reply to the appeal for Joakim Medin’s defense and adjourned the trial to May 7, 2026.
Joakim Medin was detained at Istanbul Airport on March 27, 2025, arrested on March 28, 2025 and released on May 16, 2025.

The first trial of the case against 168 people who were detained during the police intervention against the protest organized in 2024 for “November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women”, started to be held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 29 on January 8, 2026. The indictment demands sentence for 168 people on the charge of ‘violating Law No 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’. The court adjourned the trial to April 8, 2026.

The trial of the case against 10 people, including Marmaris Mayor and Republican People’s Party (CHP) Muğla provincial chair, for the protests against detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor, is held at Muğla Penal Court of First Instance No 3 on January 8, 2026. The indictment demands sentence for 10 people on the charge of ‘violating Law No 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’. The court adjourned the trial to April 30, 2026.

The trial of the case against singer Fatih Karaca, known as Mabel Matiz, on the grounds of his song “Perperişan”, started on January 9, 2026 at Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance No 54. The indictment demands sentence for the singer on the charge of ‘mediating the publication of obscene publications’. The court adjourned the trial to March 27, 2026.

It is learned that journalists covering the protest in Cizre district of Şırnak on January 8, 2026, about the attacks on Kurdish neighbourhoods in Aleppo city of Syria, were prevented by the police. It is also stated in the news reports that journalists were threatened by the police.

On January 8, 2026, it is learned from the news coverage of January 8, 2026 that, the social media account of Education and Science Workers’ Union (Eğitim İş) was banned to access on the grounds of protection of national security and public order by Ankara Penal Court of Peace No 7.
On January 8, 2026, it is learned from the news coverage of January 8, 2026 that, 6 X social media accounts of Mezopotamya and Jinnews news agencies in Turkish, Kurdish and English are banned to access on the grounds of protection of national security and public order under Article 8/A of Law No 5651, and the accounts are made invisible from Turkey.
On January 8, 2026, it is learned from the news coverage of January 8, 2026 that access to X social media account named Archive Unutmaz was banned on the grounds of protection of national security and public order within the scope of Article 8/A of Law No 5651 and the account was made invisible from Turkey. It is not known which judge issued the decision.
