(02/087) Male Violence Monitoring Report…

According to “Male Violence Monitoring Report” of Bianet published on February 8, 2022, at least 23 women and 3 children got killed by men in January 2022. It is also reported that 3 women were raped, at least 24 women were forced to sex work, 57 women were subjected to violence, 27 children were abused by men in January 2022.

(02/088) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 8, 2022 that, the Democratic Society Congress (DTK) co-chair Leyla Güven was imposed an 11-day solitary cell confinement as a result of the disciplinary proceeding in Elazığ Women’s Prison.

(02/089) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on February 8, 2022 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan in order to visit him was not responded.

(02/090) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened the protest of workers occupying their workplace to demand a wage raise and reinstatement of dismissed workers in Esenyurt district of Istanbul on February 9, 2022. The police detained 150 people including members and executives of the Warehouse, Harbour, Dock and Sea Workers Union (DGD-SEN). Detained people are released after statement procedures on the same day.

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on February 8, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

The police intervened the press declaration of Şişli Municipality workers in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) on February 8, 2022 and forced people away from the building by using physical violence.

(02/093) Detained People for Participating in Protest in Mardin…

It is learned that 41 people were detained in house raids, on the grounds of participating in the press declaration on February 6, 2022, in Kızıltepe district of Mardin to protest the raise in electricity prices. Detained people, including the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) former district co-chair Kadir Işık, are released after statement procedures on the same day.

Director and actor Abdülselam Kılgı is detained on the grounds of an investigation on him, at Izmir Airport where he arrived from Germany on February 8, 2022.

(02/095) Detained People in Van…

On February 8, 2022, 2 poeple are detained in house raids in Van. The reason of detention is unknown.

(02/096) Konya/Meram Massacre Case…

The trial of the case against 11 poeple including 1 arrestee (Mehmet Altun), for the racist attack which killed 7 members of Dedeoğulları family in Meram district of Konya on July 30, 2021; is held at Konya Heavy Penal Court No 4 on February 8, 2022.

The court board rejected recusation demand of the complainant party, and the complainant lawyers left the court room as the court board proceeded the trial before the appeal to its refusal was concluded. The court decided to continue detention of Mehmet Altun and adjourned the trial to April 19, 2022.

(02/097) Former Parliamentary Member on Trial…

The first trial of the case against former parliamentary member Berhan Şimşek, for his expressions on a television programme, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 56 on February 8, 2022.

The indictment demands sentence for Berhan Şimşek on the charge of ‘publicly degrading the state, the Grand National Assembly, the government and judicial bodies of the state’.

After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to June 21, 2022.

(02/098) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against Deniz Yücel, former Turkey correspondent of Die Welt, on the grounds of insulting the former deputy public prosecutor of Istanbul, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 24 on February 8, 2022. The court imposed on Deniz Yücel a punitive fine of 7,080 Turkish Liras.

(02/099) Journalist on Trial in Kars…

Journalist Selda Manduz has been acquitted by the local court but as Erzurum Regional Court reversed the local court’s verdict, the retrial is held at Kars Heavy Penal Court No 2 on February 8, 2022. The court sentenced Selda Manduz to 1 year and 6 months on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

(02/100) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against Gazete Duvar reporter Hazal Ocak, former publishing coordinator Serkan Ozan, former executive editor Olcay Büyüktaş Akça and former managing internet editor Ozan Yurtoğlu from the Cumhuriyet newspaper, upon the complaint of the President’s son over a news report, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 2 on February 8, 2022. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to June 7, 2022.

(02/101) Penalty Fine for Participating in a Protest in Istanbul…

It is learned that 5 people who have been detained after the meeting on March 6, 2021 in Istanbul by Istanbul8 March platform, are imposed administrative fines of a total 3,500 Turkish Liras on the grounds of ‘violating the Law on Public Health’.

(02/102) People on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against 8 people who have been detained by the police intervening the Pride March on June 26, 2021 in Istanbul, on the charge of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations’ at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 16 on February 8, 20222. The court acquitted 8 people.

(02/103) Person on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The final trial of the case against writer Ömer Ağın, through the investigation on DTK, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5 on February 8, 2022. The court acquitted Ömer Ağın.

(02/104) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 241 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 111,096 as of February 8, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 88,970 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 12,446,111 as of February 8, 2022.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 8, 2022 that, 19 of 23 prisoners in a ward in Ağrı Patnos L Type Prison tested positive for Covid-19 and those prisoners are staying in the ward where prisoners with negative results are kept.
