(09/059) Operations and Attacks…

The Ministry of National Defence announced that 1 soldier (Yunus Özbek) died after having a heart attack during the “Claw-Lock” military operation in the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on September 7, 2023.

It is learned from the news coverage of September 9, 2023 that 2 militants died in a clash between security forces and HPG militants in rural areas of Özalp district of Van.

(09/060) Labour Killings…

On September 10, 2023, the Worker Health and Worker Safety Council (ISIG) revealed that at least 201 workers including 21 women, 10 children and 11 migrant workers died while working in August, 2023. Thus 1255 workers died in labour killings in the first eight months of 2023.

(09/061) Torture and Ill-Treatment Under Custody in Istanbul…

It is learned from the declaration of the People’s Law Office on September 9, 2023 that one finger of Grup Yorum music band member Dilan Poyraz who was detained and handcuffed behind her back during the police raid to Idil Cultural Center in Okmeydanı neighbourhood of Istanbul on September 8, 2023, was broken.

(09/062) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of September 8, 2023 that, 3 female prisoners (Mizgin Kayıtbey, Lale Kabişen and Nazlıcan) who objected male correction officers coming for the roll-call in Ağrı Patnos L Type Prison on August 31, 2023 were subjected to torture and ill-treatment of male correction officers. It is claimed in the news reports that the prisoners were subjected to “hogties” and were kept in that position for 4 hours. Mizgin Kayitbey’s mother stated to the press that the weekly phone call with her daughter on September 8, 2023 was interrupted after her daughter talked about the torture they were subjected to. Lawyer Bayram Çiçek, who met with prisoners who were subjected to torture and other ill-treatment, stated the following to the press: “Even though a week had passed since the incident, the scars were still vivid. Torture starts when the women say, ‘We have special clothes, the male officers cannot do roll-call’. They were beaten upon objection. Green Left Party Ağrı deputies previously visited the prison and prisoners have told them about what they have been through. During the torture, the correction officers beat them saying ‘So you tell about the prison’s problems to the deputies?’, prison directors also say this later.”

It is learned from the news coverage of September 8, 2023 that a ward of 28 prisoners in Istanbul Marmara (Silivri) L Type Prison No. 1 was given lunch for only 2 people on September 6, 2023, and that the correction officers spilled the food on the floor as the prisoners objected this.

It is learned from the news coverage of September 11, 2023 that 39 prisoners in Ankara Sincan Women’s Prisoners who rejected daily meals to protest the right violations against ill prisoners were subjected to disciplinary proceedings.

It is learned from the news coverage of September 10, 2023 that an ill prisoner named Şervan Serkaya who was transferred from Maraş Türkoğlu L Type Prison to Kırşehir S Type Prison was not referred to hospitals.

(09/064) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on September 8, 2023 to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by families and tutelary of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, and Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in Imralı Prison, in order to visit them was not responded.

(09/065) Police Intervention to Protest in Izmir…

The police intervened in the protest held by workers who were dismissed for being union members in a company in Izmir, and detained 39 people, including the Agricultural Workers’ Union (Tarım-Sen) chair Umut Kocagöz and the Mine Workers’ Union (Maden-Sen) chair Gökay Çakır, using physical violence.

(09/066) Police Intervention to Press Declaration in Istanbul…

The police intervened in the press declaration of Saturday Mothers/People held at the Galatasaray Square of Beyoğlu district of Istanbul on September 9, 2023, and detained 19 people including the Human Rights Association (HRA) Istanbul branch chair Gülseren Yoleri. It is learned that the police prevented journalists and human rights observers from recording the intervention. Detained people were released after statement procedures on the same day. Detained people were: Gülseren Yoleri, Hatice Onaran, Hanife Yıldırım, Maside Ocak, Melike Ersoy, Gülendam Özdemir, Newroz Ali Tosun, Mikail Kırbayır, Ali Ocak, Nazım Dikbaş, Ömer Kavran, Deniz Aytaç, Mete Demircigil, Davut Arslan, Hünkar Yurtsever, Doğan Özkan, Cüneyt Yılmaz, Türker Demirci and Necif Kuru Arpaçay.

(09/067) Police Prevention to Support Declaration in for Saturday Mothers…

The police prevented the press declaration called by the HRA Van branch to be held in Van on September 9, 2023 to support Saturday Mothers/People, on the grounds of the governorate’s ban. The press declaration at the entrance of the HRA branch office as the group could not leave the building due to police prevention.

(09/068) Prevention of Event in Istanbul…

It is learned that the “Take Your Drink and Come” event, which was planned to be organized by the Free Thought Association on the beach of Kadıköy district of Istanbul on September 9, 2023, was prevented by the police and 3 people who were the managers of the association were fined for “behaviour against the order” in accordance with the Misdemeanour Law.

(09/069) Detained YSP Member and Other Person in Istanbul…

On September 8, 2023, the Green Left Party (YSP) Youth Assembly executive board member Ömer Görünmek and a person named Mücahit Avcı were detained in Istanbul on the grounds of an event they participated. Ömer Görünmek was released by the court on judicial control conditions on September 11, 2023 while Mücahit Avcı was released after statement procedures.

(09/070) Detained People in Diyarbakır…

2 of 4 people (Ramazan Datumani and Davut Datumani) who were detained in Çınar district of Diyarbakır on September 5, 2023 were arrested by the court on September 8, 2023 while 2 of them were released on judicial control conditions.

(09/071) Detained SGDF Members in Diyarbakır…

On September 9, 2023, two members (Muhammed Altınkaya and Heja Kaya) of the Socialist Youth Associations’’ Federation (SGDF) were detained in a house raid in Diyarbakır. Detained people were released after statement procedures on September 11, 2023.

(09/072) Detained Person in Van…

On September 9, 2023 a person named Baran Tibelik was detained in a house raid in İpekyolu district of Van. The number of detainees through this investigation raised to 4. 3 people (Şiyar Orhan, Delil Bozkurt and Serhat Akdağ) are arrested by the court on September 11, 2023 while Baran Tibelik was released after statement procedures at the prosecutor’s office.

(09/073) Detained TKP Members in Kocaeli…

The police intervened in the film screening held at the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) Freedom Neighbourhood House in Kocaeli on September 9, 2023 and detained 13 people. Detained people were released after statement procedures on the same day.

(09/074) Detained People in Diyarbakır…

2 people were detained after the Amedspor-Düzcespor football match played on September 10, 2023 on the grounds that they did not stand up while the National Anthem was being sung. Detained people were released on judicial control conditions by the court on September 11, 2023.

(09/075) Arrested Person in Izmir…

It is learned that a 16-year-old child (Y. İ.) who was detained on the grounds of writing “Don’t make a fuss” on an Atatürk monument in Kemalpaşa district of Izmir was arrested by the court on September 11, 2023.

(09/076) Former MP on Trial…

The indictment of Silopi Prosecutor’s Office against the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) former Hakkari MP and the Democratic Society Congress (DTK) co-chair Leyla Güven for the speech she gave at an event in Silopi district of Şırnak on December 18, 2020 was accepted by Silopi Penal Court of First Instance No. 3 on September 11, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Leyla Güven on the charge of ‘inciting hatred and hostility among public’. The first trial will be held on October 31, 2023.

(09/077) Association Member on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The final trial of the case against Rosa Women’s Association member Narin Gezgör was held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 9 on September 11, 2023. The court sentenced Narin Gezgör to 7 years and 6 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

(09/078) Musician on Trial in Uşak…

The final trial of the case against musician Tan Taşçı, over his social media posts about the case against actress Ezgi Mola, for her social media post about specialised sergeant Musa Orhan, who is charged with sexual assault to a child, is held at Uşak Banaz Penal Court of First Instance on September 11, 2023. The court sentenced Tan Taşçı to a penalty fine of 1,300 Turkish Liras on the charge of ‘insult’ and deferred the announcement of the verdict.

A child named Ipek Er committed suicide after she was subjected to sexual assault by specialised sergeant Musa Orhan in Beşiri district of Batman, and lost her life in hospital on August 18, 2020.

(09/079) October 10 – Ankara Massacre Case…

The trial of the case against Erman Ekici and 16 fugitive defendants, for October 10 – Ankara Massacre, is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 4 on September 8, 2023. The court decided to continue detention of Erman Ekici and adjourned the trial to November 30, 2023.

19 defendants have been sentenced to jail sentences on August 3, 2018, at the final trial of the case on October 10 – Ankara Massacre and the case against 16 fugitives was separated.

(09/080) Investigation Against CHP MP…

It is learned from the news coverage of September 9, 2023 that, Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation against the Republican People’s Party (CHP) Diyarbakır MP Sezgin Tanrıkulu on the charge of ‘degrading Turkish Nation, State of Turkish Republic, the Organs and Institutions of the State’ and ‘inciting hatred and hostility among public’ for his expressions “Not everything done by the Turkish Armed Forces is free from criticism. We are members of parliament and we question these. Isn’t it the Turkish Armed Forces that staged a coup on September 12? Isn’t it the army that attempted a coup on July 15 and burned villages? There are cases that I follow. Isn’t it the Turkish Armed Forces that threw 15 villagers from a helicopter?”.

It is learned from the news coverage of September 8, 2023 that, the Aykut Kence Evolution Conference, which will be held by the Middle East Technical University (METU) Biology and Genetics Society (BİYOGEN) at the METU Culture and Congress Center on December 6 – 7, 2023, was cancelled by the university rectorate on the grounds that the building would be renovated.

It is learned that the news reports mentioning the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) former Van MP, published on https://artigercek.com (2 news reports) and https://www.dokuz8haber.net websites were banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Van Erciş Penal Court of Peace on September 6, 2023.

It is learned that the news reports about the operation “Swamp” of the General Directorate of Security, published on https://www.birgun.nethttps://halktv.com.tr and https://haber.sol.org.tr/ websites were banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Istanbul Penal Court of Peace No. 3 on September 8, 2023.

(09/083) Ban of Events in Van…

Van Governorate’s Office made a declaration on September 8, 2023 and banned press declarations, sit-in protests, conducting surveys, opening stands and tents, collecting petitions, distributing leaflets, hanging banners, and so on for 2 days as of September 9, 2023.

(09/084) Attack on CHP Office in Kocaeli…

It is learned that a person named D. D. carried on an attack on the CHP office in Sırrıpaşa neighbourhood in Derince district of Kocaeli on September 11, 2023 which caused material damage.

(09/085) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The Ministry of National Defence announced on September 9, 2023 that, 46 people were detained in alleged attempt to illegally flee to Greece.
