Assyrian Gevriye Akgüç (92) lost his life due to an armed attack in the Midyat district of Mardin on November 6, 2023. It is learned that 15 people, including 2 village guards, are detained in relation to Gevriye Akgüç’s death.

On November 7, 2023, 18 people, including Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (HEDEP) Solhan district co-chair Übeyid Özer, were detained in house raids in Genç, Karlıova and Solhan districts of Bingöl. The names of the detainees which were learnt are as follows: Übeyid Özer, Alaattin Narinç, Abdurrahman Sav, Şefika Doğan, Mehtap Ergi, Mazlum Serinyel, İsmail Andan, Yunus Sönmez, Saadet Arslan, Ruken Yiğit, Tuba Demir, Hasan Akyol, Ahmet Dumlu, Kıymat Bağlı, Vesile Sayak, Tütem Çıkaray.

Bircan Yıldırım, editor-in-chief of BircanTVHaber, was detained on November 7, 2023 on charges of ‘publicly disseminating misleading information’ based on a social media post she made.

On November 7, 2023, the trial of the case against Sırrı Süreyya Önder, Istanbul MP and Deputy Chair of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), continued at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 8. The indictment demands sentence for Sırrı Süreyya Önder on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’. The court decided to suspend the proceedings against Sırrı Süreyya Önder on the grounds that he was elected as an MP and gained legislative immunity.

The first hearing of the case against DİSK Basın-İş Chair and Gerçek Gündem Managing Director Faruk Eren and Gerçek Gündem Editor Furkan Karabay, upon the complaint of former Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor and later Constitutional Court Member İrfan Fidan, began on November 7, 2023, at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 22. The indictment demands a sentence for the journalists on the charge of ‘targeting officials who took part in the fight against terrorism’. Following the defences, the court adjourned the hearing to March 5, 2024.

The trial of the case against 49 people, including 11 lawyers from the Libertarian Lawyers Association (ÖHD) and 38 members of the Association for Solidarity with Families of Detainees (TUAD), which was closed down by a decree law, continued on November 7, 2023, at the Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 14. The court adjourned the hearing to February 8, 2024.

On November 7, 2023, the Urfa Penal Court of First Instance No. 4 accepted the indictment of Urfa Public Prosecutor’s Office against JINNEWS reporter Derya Ren and Aslı Ceren Aslan, Sabiha Ünder and Zerga Açar, who had a quarrel with correction officers in Urfa T Type Prison No 2 on July 19, 2019, on the grounds of being insulted. The indictment demands sentence for Derya Ren and Aslı Ceren Aslan for ‘insult’ and Sabiha Ünder and Zerga Açar for ‘intentional injury’. The first hearing of the case will be held on January 19, 2024.

On November 7, 2023, the first hearing of the case against police officer S. K. on the torture and ill-treatment of Samet G. at the Taksim Şehit Haşim Taştan Police Station where he was detained and one of his testicles was removed, started at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court. The indictment demands a sentence for the defendant police officer on the charge of torture. The court adjourned the hearing.

It is learned that on November 7, 2023, an anonymous person or persons attacked the district office of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) in Kartal, Istanbul, and wrote “Hamas is here, run Özgür” and “Israel=CHP” on the entrance of the office and on the banners hanging on the office.

It is learned that news reports about a retired prosecutor on https://www.cumhuriyet.com.tr, https://artigercek.com, and https://www.birgun.net websites are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Maraş Penal Court of Peace No 1 on November 6, 2023.
