(03/075) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Adana…

On March 8, 2024, during a house raid in the Ceyhan district of Adana, 2 people, İdban Bahadır and Volkan Bahadır, were subjected to torture and ill-treatment, and Volkan Bahadır was wounded in his arm. It is stated in news reports that the police raided the wrong address. Idban Bahadır made the following remarks in his statement to the press: “They attacked us, my son was by the window, a police officer pushed my son. As a result of the push, my son’s arm hit the glass. The glass shards caused my son’s arm injury (…) We told the police the wrong address. They told us ‘I have a search warrant, I will search’.”

It is learned that the appeal made on March 8, 2024, to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by families and tutelary of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, and Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in Imralı Prison, to visit them was not responded to.

On March 8, 2024, 4 members of the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) were detained in house raids in Ankara. The reason for the detention is unknown. The names of the detainees are Kahraman Yılmaz, Ali Yıldız, Gökçe Otlu, and Burcu Durak.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 7, 2024, that the flags of the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) hung in the Yüksekova district of Hakkari were removed by the police.

(03/079) Interventions Against 8th of March Protests…

On March 7, 2024, the police intervened in the march organized by Istanbul University students for March 8 International Working Women’s Day at Beyazıt Square in the Fatih district of Istanbul, on the grounds that the banner carried by the students said LGBTIQ+ and detained at least 10 people.

(03/080) Rights Defenders, Union and Medical Chamber Executives on Trial in Van…

The case against 8 people, including Health and Social Service Workers Union (SES) Van Branch Co-Chairs Zeki Seven and Figen Çolakoğlu, HRFT applicant physician and Van-Hakkari Medical Chamber board member Dr. Ayfer Bostan, HRFT applicant physician and Van-Hakkari Medical Chamber board member Dr. Hüseyin Yaviç, HRFT applicant physician and Van-Hakkari Medical Chamber former chair Dr. Hüseyin Yaviç, who were detained during the police intervention against the press statement on 8 February 2022 in front of Van Regional Education and Research Hospital, called by the Turkish Medical Association (TTB) continued on March 8, 2024, at Van Penal Court of First Instance No 1. The indictment demands a sentence for 8 people on the charge of ‘violating Law No 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’. After defences, the court adjourned the trial to March 29, 2024.

The final hearing of the lawsuit filed against journalist Furkan Karabay upon the complaint of the President’s former lawyer due to his news article titled “Why did he threaten Erdoğan’s lawyer? The indictment came out in the armed attack with FETÖ Exchange allegations” was held on March 7, 2024, at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 21. After the defences, the court dismissed the lawsuit.

The trial of the case against journalist Gökhan Yavuzel, on the grounds of insulting the President in a social media post on June 22, 2021, was held at Urfa Penal Court of First Instance No 4 on March 8, 2024. The court adjourned the trial to October 31, 2024.

The trial of the case against journalist Gökhan Yavuzel, on the grounds of insulting the President in a statement he made after receiving a death threat, continued on March 8, 2024, at Urfa Penal Court of First Instance No 4. The court adjourned the trial to October 31, 2024.

(03/084) Former MP and Others on Trial in Hakkari…

The final trial of the case against Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) former co-chair Figen Yüksekdağ and former MPs Ertuğrul Kürkçü, Aysel Tuğluk and politicians Nazmi Gür, Esat Canan, Adil Zozani, Halil Aksoy and Hüsamettin Zenderlioğlu was held at Hakkari Heavy Penal Court No 2 on March 7, 2024. The court sentenced Adil Zozan and Halil Aksoy to 7 years and 6 months, Aysel Tuğluk and Nazmi Gür to 6 years each on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’. The court separated the cases of Figen Yüksekdağ, Ertuğrul Kürkçü and Hüsamettin Zenderlioğlu and acquitted Esat Canan.

(03/085) Party Executive on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The final trial of the case against Zekiye İlbasan, former Deputy Co-Chair of the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) was held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 4 on March 7, 2024. After defences, the court acquitted Zekiye İlbasan.

Zekiye İlbasan was detained on October 9, 2023, arrested by the court on October 10, 2023, and released on January 25, 2024.

(03/086) Party Executive on Trial in Izmir…

The first trial of the case against DEM Party İzmir provincial executive Neriman Birlikler started on March 7, 2024, at İzmir Bayraklı Heavy Penal Court No 18. The indictment demands a sentence for Neriman Birlikler on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. After defences, the court released Neriman Birlikler and adjourned the trial to June 7, 2024.

Neriman Birlikler was detained on November 28, 2023, on the grounds of her visits to the prison and was arrested on December 1, 2023.

(03/087) Ban of Access to Web Content…

It is learned that the news reports on https://www.birgun.net, https://www.cumhuriyet.com.tr, and https://www.dha.com.tr websites about male dormitory students being subjected to violence, harassment, and abuse were banned by Antalya Alanya Criminal Peace Judgeship No 1 on March 7, 2024, upon the request of Ministry of Family and Social Services.
