It is learned from the news coverage of June 8, 2023 that 3 militants died in a clash between security forces and HPG militants in the rural areas of Lice district of Diyarbakır on June 3, 2023.
The Ministry of Interior declared that 1 soldier (Aydın Ceylan) died in a clash between security forces and HPG militants in the rural areas of Pervari district of Siirt on June 7, 2023.

It is learned that a prisoner named Serhat Karsu in Erzurum Dumlu High Security Prison No. 1 was not receiving treatment and was threatened by the prison doctor saying “I’m not sending you to anywhere. You will die here if you are dying”.
(06/072) Death Fast in Prison…
It is learned from the news coverage of June 7, 2023 that a prisoner named Emrullah Kanioğlu was on hunger strike for 300 days in Diyarbakır T Type Prison No. 2 to demand a fair trial. It is learned that Emrullah Kanioğlu who converted his strike to a death fast 6 days ago, was referred to Diyarbakır Gazi Yaşargil Research and Training Hospital as his condition worsens but was taken back to prison as he rejected treatment. It is claimed in the news reports that Emrullah Kanioğlu was taken to hospital once again and was diagnosed with “psychosis” and was admitted to the psychiatry clinic.
(06/073) Interventions and Bans on Pride Month Events…
It is learned from the news coverage of June 7, 2023 that the “Pride” film screening to be held by the Science Aesthetics Culture and Art Research Foundation (BEKSAV) Cinema Collective as part of Pride Month was banned by Kadıköy District Governorate’s Office. The police intervened in the people who came to the foundation building at the time of the film screening, detained at least 8 people, including the executive of the foundation, by using physical violence. Detained people were released on the same day after statement procedures.

8 members of a family including 5 children who were detained in house raids in Cizre district of Şırnak on June 6, 2023, were released after statement procedures on June 7, 2023. The names of detained people and the reason for detention could not be learned.

The final trial of the case against Öztürk Türkdoğan, former co-chair of the Human Rights Association (HRA), on the grounds of the statement of the HRA on April 24, 2017, regarding the Armenian Genocide, is held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No. 24 on June 8, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Öztürk Türkdoğan on the charge of ‘publicly degrading the State of the Republic of Turkey’. The court acquitted Öztürk Türkdoğan.

The first trial of the case against Diyarbakır Bar Association former chair Cihan Aydın and executive board members Muhlis Oğurgül, Ahmet Dağ, Erhan Aytekin, Fırat Üger, Gazal Bayram Koluman, Mehmet Akbaş, Serdar Çelebi, Tevfik Karahan, Ömer Şeran and Özgür Yılmaz Biçen, for the statement about the Armenian Genocide on April 24, 2020, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 9 on June 7, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for bar association executives on the charge of ‘publicly degrading the State of the Republic of Turkey’. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to October 23, 2023.

The retrial of the case against journalists Ahmet Memiş, Ali Akkuş, Cemal Azmi Kalyoncu, Gökçe Fırat Çulhaoğlu, Ünal Tanık, Yakup Çetin and Yetkin Yıldız is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 25 on June 8, 2023 as the Penal Department No. 16 of the Court of Cassation has overturned the local court’s earlier verdict. The court adjourned the trial to October 19, 2023.

The trial of the case against 8 university students, for protesting the rector appointed to Boğaziçi University by the President, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 60 on June 7, 2023. The court sentenced 4 people to 10 months each on the charge of “damaging public property” and postponed the sentence, and acquitted 4 people.

The trial of the case against 52 people, on the grounds of ‘deprivation of liberty’ and ‘violation of the law on meetings and demonstrations’ for they have participated in the protests against the new rector appointed to Boğaziçi University by the President, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 49 on June 7, 2023. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to October 11, 2023.

The final trial of the case against 8 people who were detained by the police intervening into the press declaration held in Ankara on August 12, 2020 to protest Turkey’s withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention, is held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No. 53 on June 7, 2023. The court acquitted 8 people.

The trial of the case against documentary director Sibel Tekin is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 26 on June 8, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Sibel Tekin on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court decided to lift the ban on leaving the country and adjourned the trial to October 3, 2023.
Sibel Tekin was detained on December 16, 2022, was arrested by the court on December 17, 2022; and was released on judicial control conditions on January 30, 2023.

The trial of the case against Veli Saçılık, for his social media posts about the Interior Minister and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) chair, is held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No. 30 on June 7, 2023. The court adjourned the trial to November 9, 2023.
(06/083) Vartinis Massacre Case…
The retrial of the case against former gendarmerie lieutenant Bülent Karaoğlu, for death of 9 members of Öğüt family including 7 children, in their house that was burned down by soldiers on May 17, 1993 in Altınova (Vartinis) town of Korkut district in Muş; is held at Kırıkkale Heavy Penal Court No. 1 on June 6, 2023. The court adjourned the trial to July 5, 2023.
The final trial of the case was held on March 1, 2016; and the local court has acquitted all 4 defendants (Hasköy Gendarmerie Commander lieutenant Bülent Karaoğlu, Hasköy District Company Commander Lieutenant Hanifi Akyıldız, Gökyazı Gendarmerie Commander master sergeant Turhan Nurdoğan and Muş Security Directorate Special Task Department chief police Şerafettin Us). On January 26, 2021, the Penal Department No. 1 of the Court of Cassation has approved the acquittal for 3 defendants but reversed the local court’s verdict regarding Bülent Karaoğlu, who was the commander of Hasköy Gendarmerie Station back then.

The Minister of Justice stated the following regarding the situation of Workers’ Party of Turkey (TİP) Hatay MP Can Atalay, who was not released despite being elected as a deputy in the elections held on May 14, 2023: “It is not under the responsibility of the Ministry of Justice. It is a case of the Court of Cassation. His case continues as a convict at the Court of Cassation, the verdict has been given. The Presidency of the Assembly will act according to the response of the Court of Cassation. The Gezi Case is an issue related to the constitutional order. A file outside the scope of immunity in Article 14 of the Constitution.”

It is learned from the news coverage of June 7, 2023 that the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTUK) issued following television channels with administrative fines: FOX TV for the expressions “Democracy is not just ballot boxes” of journalist Çiğdem Toker in a programme; Halk TV for the expressions “I respect the election results legally but not politically” of the Victory Party chair Ümit Özdağ in a programme; Tele1 TV for the allegations about ballot papers in a programme; and Flash News for the expressions of the Democrat Party Istanbul MP Cemal Enginyurt.

It is learned that the https://onlyfans.com website of a social media platform that works with a subscription system was banned to access by Istanbul Penal Court of Peace No. 1 on June 7, 2023.
