(06/085) Racist Attack in Istanbul…

It is learned that a Syrian refugee, Sherifi El Ahmed (22), was shot at the head in front of his house after the racist attack to the house in Bağcılar district, where he lived with 2 Syrian refugees, and died in hospital on June 7, 2022.

(06/086) Operations and Attacks…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 7, 2022, that 3 militants died in clashes between Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) units and HPG militants in the Haftanin region of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (IKRG) on February 11, 2022.

(06/087) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 7,2022, that, the prisoner named Cesim Karataş, held in Urfa T-Type Prison No 1, was threatened by the correction officers saying, “You should be executed, I would actually kill you”. It is also learned in the news reports that the social and cultural rights of the prisoners were restricted except for their sports rights, and that the newspapers Evrensel and Yeni Yaşam were not given to the prisoners, and that Kurdish newspapers and magazines were not taken in the prison.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 7, 2022, that 4 prisoners (Emrullah Abay, Mehmet Şafak Elçiçek, Süleyman Parlak and İsmail Genç) brought to Hatay İskenderun T Type Prison for a trial of their cases were subjected to torture and other ill-treatment in prison

It is learned from the news coverage of June 7, 2022, that the prisoners held in Urfa T Type Prison No 1 were not taken to the hospital.

It is learned that the appeal made on June 7, 2022 to the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan in order to visit him was not responded.

(06/090) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened in the press declaration made on June 7, 2022 in front of the Human Rights Monument on Ankara Yüksel Street as part of the “I Want My Job Back” protest, and forced the people away from the monument by using physical violence.

The police intervened the press declaration of Şişli Municipality workers who were dismissed while working in Şişli Municipality in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) Headquarters in Ankara, on June 7, 2022, and the police forced the participants away from the party building by using physical violence.

(06/092) Detained Journalists in Diyarbakır…

On June 8, 2022, 16 journalists, including Dicle Fırat Journalists Association (DFG) Co-chair Serdar Altan and Jinnews executive editor Safiye Alagaş, were detained in house raids in Diyarbakır.

Detained journalists are: Serdar Altan, Safiye Alagaş, Gülşen Koçuk, Aziz Oruç, Ömer Çelik, Suat Doğuhan, Ramazan Geciken, Berivan Karatorak, Esmer Tunç, Neşe Toprak, Zeynel Abidin Bulut, Mazlum Doğan Güler, Mehmet Şahin, Elif Üngür, İbrahim Koyuncu and Remziye Temel.

On June 7, 2022, 1 person (Hasan Irgat) was detained in a house raid in the Tatvan district of Bitlis. The reason for detention is unknown.

(06/094) The Case Against Former MP in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) former MP Nursel Aydoğan is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 4 on June 7, 2022. the indictment demands sentence for Nursel Aydoğan on the charge of “being an illegal organisation member”. The court rejected the request for dismissal of the case made on the grounds of the decision of the European Court of Human Rights regarding the lifting of the immunity of the deputies and adjourned the trial to December 6, 2022.

The trial of the case against Cumhuriyet newspaper editor-in-chief Serkan Ozan, responsible editor-in-chief Olcay Büyüktaş Akça, internet news director Ozan Yurtoğlu and reporter Hazal Ocak, for the news report titled  “Bilal Erdoğan’s lucky friend” published in Cumhuriyet newspaper  is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 2 on June 7, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to November 8, 2022.

(06/096) Person on Trial for Insulting the President in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against Hacer Ankut Efe, a member of the People’s Liberation Party (HKP), on the charge of ‘insulting the President’ in a social media post is held at Istanbul Bakırköy Penal Court of First Instance No 10 on June 7, 2022. The court sentenced Hacer Ankut Efe to 1 year, 2 months and 17 days in prison.

(06/097) Police Officers on Trial in Antalya…

The trial of the case against police officers Y. D. and U. Y. regarding the death of Murat Araç (19) is held at Gazipaşa Penal Court of First Instance on June 7, 2022. Murat Araç has lost his life after falling from the third floor of the Antalya Gazipaşa District Security Directorate where he was taken after being detained on December 4, 2017. The indictment demands 6 months to 2 years of sentence for 2 police officers on the charge of ‘abuse of power’. The court adjourned the trial to July 5, 2022.

(06/098) The Case on the Attack on HDP Building in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 1 person (M. E. S) regarding the attack on the HDP building in Bahçelievler district of Istanbul on 28 December 2021, is held at Istanbul Bakırköy Penal Court of First Instance No 7 on June 7, 2022.

After defence hearings, the court decided to continue detention of M. E. S. and to send the case file to Bakırköy Heavy Penal Court on duty, by giving a decision of non-jurisdiction regarding the file.

(06/099) Interventions and Bans on Pride Month Events…

It is learned that the Pride Parade to be held on the campus of Ankara Middle East Technical University on June 10, 2022 as a part of LGBTI+ Pride Month was banned by the Rectorate on June 7, 2022.

(06/100) Banned Theater Play in Mersin…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 7, 2022, that Moliere’s play Tartuffe, which will be staged in Kurdish on June 6, 2022 at the Metropolitan Municipality Congress Hall, was banned by Mersin Governorate’s Office, saying it was “not deemed appropriate”.

(06/101) Police Raid the News Agency Office in Diyarbakır…

On 8 June 2022, the office of Jinnews news agency in Yenişehir district of Diyarbakır was raided by the police. It is learned that computers, digital materials and some books and magazines in the office were seized by the police after the search. It is reported that managers of the news agency were not informed by the police about the search.
