(01/036) Meeting Requests with Abdullah Öcalan not Responded to…

It is learned that the appeal made on January 7, 2025, to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by lawyers in order to visit their clients PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded.

(01/037) Journalist Detained İn Antep…

JINNEWS reporter Derya Ren, who was in Antep’s Nizip district on January 7, 2025, to cover a news story, was detained on suspicion when the vehicle she was traveling in was stopped by the police. It has been learned that after an argument with the Counterterrorism Branch officers who came to the scene, Ren was taken into custody on charges of ‘resisting the police’ and released the same day after her statement was taken at the police station.

(01/038) Bar Executives Under Investigation…

Istanbul Bar Chairperson Ibrahim Kaboğlu and 10  Board members gave statements to the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office on January 7, 2025, as part of an investigation initiated against them on charges of ‘making propaganda for a terrorist organization’ and ‘deliberately spreading misleading information’ due to their social media posts about the deaths of journalists Nazım Daştan and Cihan Bilgin in North and East Syria.

It has been learned that Yeni Yaşam Newspaper employee Şakir Karadaş and Ajansa Welat employees Hülya Taş and Rohat Bulut were detained at a police checkpoint in Erciş district of Van on January 7, 2025, after a background check.

(01/040) Journalists on Trial in Ankara…

The final trial of the case against journalists Deniz Nazlım, Sibel Yükler, and Yıldız Tar, who were detained under torture and ill-treatment while protesting the arrest of their colleagues at Ulus Square in the Altındağ district of Ankara on 5 July 2022, on the charge of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No 2911’, was held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 71 on 7 January 2025. The court acquitted 3 journalists.

(01/041) Journalist on Trial in İstanbul…

The final trial of the case against journalist Furkan Karabey on the grounds of a new he had made was held at İstanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 2 on 7 January 2025. The indictment seeks the journalist’s conviction for the crime of ‘publicly insulting the judicial organs of the state.’ The court sentenced Furkan Karabey to a judicial fine of 4,500 TL.

(01/042) Academic on Trial in Diyarbakir…

The first trial against Prof. Dr. Cenap Ekinci from Dicle University Medicine Faculty who was detained on 3 December 2024 for  his social media and was arrested on 4 January 2024 was held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 5 on 7 January2025. The indictment seeks the Cenap Ekinci’s conviction for the crime of ‘making propaganda of an illegal organisation.’ The court, which announced its decision at the first hearing, acquitted Cenap Ekinci and ordered his release.

(01/043) Women on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against 3 women who were subjected to torture and ill-treatment during the police intervention against a peaceful demonstration against the detention of Prof. Dr. Şebnem Korur Fincancı, former Chair of the Central Council of the Turkish Medical Association (TTB) and Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TİHV) board member, in Istanbul on 26 October 2022, and who called Hanifi Zengin, then Istanbul Security Branch Director, ‘harasser’, was held  at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 27 on 7 January 2025. The court acquitted 3 women.

(01/044) People on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 12 people who were detained in the house raids for marching to Taksim during the May 1 celebrations in Istanbul, started on January 7, 2024, at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 25. The indictment demands a sentence for 12 people on the charges of ‘violating Law No 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’, ‘resisting to prevent duty’, ‘intentional injury’ and ‘damaging property’. Court adjourned the trial to Jube 24, 2025.

Eight people who were detained as part of an investigation were released at the first hearing of the case on July 3, 2024.

(01/045) Journalists and Other People on Trial in Antalya…

The final trial of the case against 17 people, including journalists Eylem Sonbahar, Sema Karakurt, and Metin Cihan, who were detained during a police crackdown on a protest against the G20 Leaders Summit held in Antalya on November 15, 2015 was held on 7 January 2025 at Antalya Heavy Pnal Court No 25. The court ruled to dismiss the case against 16 individuals due to the statute of limitations, and the case against one individual who did not present a defense was separated. The hearing for the case of the individual whose file was separated will be held on April 21, 2025.

(01/046) People Detained in Edirne…

Two individuals were detained in Edirne on January 7, 2025, on allegations of attempting to illegally cross into Greece.
