(01/061) Asylum Seeker Children Subjected to Physical Violence of Security Guards in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 7, 2021 that, 4 asylum seeker children were subjected to physical violence of the security guards on the grounds that “they stow away” at Üsküdar station of Marmaray rail way in Istanbul. It is learned that the security guards intervened other passengers for they were recording the violence.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 7, 2021 that, Harun Kaya, a prisoner in Kürkçüler F Type Prison was subjected to disciplinary proceedings for his notes on a book, and that he was penalised to 15 days of solitary cell confinement as a result of disciplinary proceedings.

It is learned that the appeal made on January 7, 2021 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s lawyers in order to visit their client was responded.

(01/064) Detained University Students in Istanbul…

24 people who were detained in house raids in Istanbul, on the grounds of participating in the press declaration at Boğaziçi University campus which was held on January 4, 2021 to protest the new rector appointed to the university by the President, are released on judicial control conditions on January 7, 2021. It is learned that 16 people are still under custody.

The police prevented the march in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on January 7, 2021, which was to be held against detention of university students for participating in the press declaration on January 4, 2021 to protest the new rector appointed to Boğaziçi University by the President.

The police prevented the commemoration organized for a group including Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) MP’s at the graveside of Sakine Cansız, who lost her life in an armed attack in Paris on January 9, 2013.

(01/067) The Case Against Former HDP Co-Chairs, Co-Mayors and HDP Executives…

The indictment of Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office through “Kobanê investigations” against 108 people (27 of them are arrested) including HDP’s former co-chairs Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ, Kars city co-mayors Şevin Alaca and Ayhan Bilgen and several executives of HDP is accepted by Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 22 on January 7, 2021.

The first trial of the case will be held on April 25, 2021, Sunday.

(01/068) Co-Mayor on Trial…

The first trial of the case against Mehmet Demir, co-mayor of Batman who was suspended and replaced by a trustee, is held at Batman Heavy Penal Court No 2 on January 7, 2021.

It is learned that political party and association representatives were not allowed in the courtroom.

Mehmet Demir joined the trial from prison via sound and vision system. It is learned Mehmet Demir could not make his defence statement since 3 translators who were on duty could not translate his declarations. The court decided to continue detention of Mehmet Demir and adjourned the trial to January 20, 2021.

Mehmet Demir was detained on July 21, 2020 and was arrested on July 22, 2020.

(01/069) HDP Members on Trial in Adana…

The first trial of the case against 7 members of HDP Youth Assembly (İbrahim Önen and Hasan Arslan [both arrested] and Ferhat Kalkan, Ferhat Sezgin, Muhammed Seyit Barış, Gaffar Meşe and Serdal Arslan) is held at Adana Heavy Penal Court No 11 on January 7, 2021.

After defence hearings the court released 2 arrested people and adjourned the trial to March 18, 2021.

(01/070) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against journalist Ayten Akgün, for her social media posts is held at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 6 on January 7, 2021. The court sentenced Ayten Akgün to 11 months and 20 days on the charge of ‘insulting the President’ and deferred the announcement of the verdict.

(01/071) Poet on Trial in Ankara for ‘Insulting the President’…

The final trial of the case against poet Ahmet Telli, on the grounds of ‘insulting the President’ in social media posts on an account that is not his, is held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 22 on January 7, 2021. The court acquitted Ahmet Telli.

It is learned that Hurşit Besle, city council member of Şahinbey district of Antep is suspended by the Ministry of Interior on January 7, 2021, on the grounds of an investigation against him.

It is learned that Adnan Erol, city council member of Şehitkamil district of Antep is suspended by the Ministry of Interior on January 7, 2021, on the grounds of an investigation against him.

(01/073) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 194 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 1,370 new Covid-19 ill patients were diagnosed on January 7, 2021. It is also declared that the daily number of Covid-19 case is 12,171.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 22,264 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 2,296,102 as of January 7, 2021.

It is learned that 2 health workers (doctor Necati Emirhan in Samsun and Professor Münevver Bertan in Ankara) lost their lives due to Covid-19 on January 7, 2021.
