(04/093) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of April 7, 2022 that, the prisoners in Diyarbakır High Security Prison No 1 were subjected to physical and verbal violence of the correction officers and were forced to stand up in line as in military order during roll-calls.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 7, 2022 that, in Kocaeli Gebze Women’s Closed Prison, the books and magazines demanded by prisoners were not given to them and prisoners were subjected to arbitrary disciplinary punishments.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 7, 2022 that, ill prisoners in Kocaeli Gebze Women’s Closed Prison were not receiving treatment.

(04/095) Hunger Strike in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of April 7, 2022 that, Tuğçenur Özbay, a prisoner in Izmir Şakran Women’s Closed prison has started a 1-month hunger strike on March 16, 2022, to support Sibel Balaç and Gökhan Yıldırım who are on hunger strike to protest right violations in prisons.

It is learned that the appeal made on April 7, 2022 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan in order to visit him was not responded.

The police intervened the press declaration of Şişli Municipality workers in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) on April 7, 2022 and forced people away from the building by using physical violence.

The police intervened the press declaration of Yasin Keskin, who demands to be reinstated to his job at Çankaya Municipality, outside of municipality building on April 7, 2022 and forced him away from the building by using physical violence.

(04/099) Detained People in Van…

On April 7, 2022, 11 people are detained in house raids in Van, through an investigation on Yenimahalle Free Public Association. 13 people have been detained through the same investigation on April 6, 2022.

(04/100) Detained HDP Executives and Other People in Malatya…

4 people (the Peoples’ Democratic Party [HDP] provincial executive Nurettin Kımık, Akçadağ district executive Murat Çatak, Akbay Örenli and Hacı Dere) who were detained in house raids in Malatya on April 7, 2022, are released on judicial control conditions by the court on April 8, 2022.

3 people (Timur Aydın, Selman Yavuz and Halit Gündüz) who were detained on April 7, 2022 in Erzurum, are arrested by the court on the grounds of finalised jail sentences.

(04/102) Newspaper Employees on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 7 employees of Özgürlükçü Demokrasi newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 23 on April 7, 2022.

The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded acquittal of Mizgin Fendik, and demanded sentence for grant owner İhsan Yaşar, executive editor İshak Yasul and editors Pınar Tarlak, Hicran Urun, Reyhan Hacıoğlu and Memhet Ali Çelebi on the charges of ‘being an illegal organisation member’, ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ and ‘publishing material for an illegal organisation’.

The court adjourned the trial to June 14, 2022.

(04/103) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The retrial of the case against Şahin Alpay, Ali Bulaç, Mümtazer Türköne, Amhet Turan Alkan and Mehmet Özdemir is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 13 on April 7, 2022. On September 25, 2020, Penal Department No 6 of the Court of Cassation has reversed the jail sentences given to journalists on the grounds of “lack of investigation”.

The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded separation of the case for Mehmet Özdemir, and jail sentence up to 15 years for other 4 people on the charge of ‘aiding an illegal organisation’. The court adjourned the trial to June 28, 2022.

(04/104) HDP Executives on Trial in Manisa…

The first trial of the case against Naile Gümüştaş and Hayri Bökü, district co-chairs of HDP in Turgutlu, is held at Manisa Heavy Penal Court No 3 on April 7, 2022. The indictment demands sentence for 2 people on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court decided to continue detention of 2 people and adjourned the trial to May 12, 2022.

Naile Gümüştaş and Hayri Bökü were arrested on February 14, 2022 and were arrested by the court on February 22, 2022.

(04/105) ESP Members and Executives on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against 23 members of the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP), the Socialist Women’s Assemblies (SKM) and the Socialist Youth Associations’ Federation (SGDF), who were detained while they were distributing leaflets in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on April 13, 2018, is held on April 7, 2022. The court acquitted 23 people. 10 of them including ESP co-chair Şahin Tümüklü were arrested on April 17, 2018.

(04/106) Mayor on Trial for ‘Insulting the President’ in Izmir…

The trial of the case against Gaziemir district mayor Halil Arda, on the grounds of ‘insulting the President’ on social media, is held at Izmir Penal Court of First Instance No 34 on April 7, 2022. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial.

(04/107) People on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against Nuriye Gülmen, Yasemin Karadağ, Fırat Kaya and Olcay Karadağ is held at Istanbul Heavy penal Court No 28 on April 7, 2022.

The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded acquittal of Fırat Kaya and Olcay Karadağ and demanded sentence for Nuriye Gülmen and Yasemin Karadağ on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

The court decided to continue detention of Nuriye Gülmen and Yasemin Karadağ and adjourned the trial to May 25, 2022.

(04/108) The Case on the Murder of Journalist in Istanbul…

The trial of the case regarding murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Consulate General of Saudi Arabia in Istanbul, is held at Istanbul Heavy penal Court No 11 on April 7, 2022.

The court decided to stop the proceeding and to transfer the case to the Saudi Arabian judicial authorities and to revoke the arrest warrants and red notice orders for the defendants.

Journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a citizen of Saudi Arabia, has gone missing after he went to the Consulate General Office in Istanbul on October 2, 2018, and the Saudi Arabian administration has claimed that the journalist died in the consulate building “as a result of quarrel” on October 20, 2022.

(04/109) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 36 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 9,354 as of April 7, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 98,311 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 14,939,259 as of April 7, 2022.
