(04/080) Male Violence Monitoring Report…

According to “Male Violence Monitoring Report” of Bianet which was published on April 7, 2021, at least 36 women and 4 children were killed by men in March 2021. It is also reported that 9 women were raped, 66 women were forced to sex work, 68 women were subjected to violence, 25 children were abused by men in March, 2021.

(04/081) Labour Killings…

On April 8, 2021, Worker Health and Worker Safety Council (ISIG) revealed that at least 142 workers including 7 women, 3 children and 4 migrants died while working in March 2021.

(04/082) Operations and Attacks…

The Ministry of Defence declared that 2 soldiers (Gökhan Çakır and Ahmet Akdal) died in an attack against Turkish Armed Forces in Syria on April 7, 2021.

(04/083) Soldier Died in a Plane Crash in Konya…

On April 7, 2021, an aerobatic military plane crashed in Konya and the pilot Burak Genççelep died.

(04/084) Prevention of Right to Health in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of April 7, 2021 that, an ill prisoner in Afyon Bolvadin T Type Prison was not referred to hospital and that prisoners were not given their medications on a regular basis.

(04/085) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on April 7, 2021 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s lawyers in order to visit their client was not responded.

(04/086) Police Prevention to Protest About Hunger Strikes in Prison…

The police prevented the press declaration of Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in Diyarbakır on April 7, 2021; which was held to draw attention to indefinite hunger strikes that started on November 27, 2020 in prisons to demand an end to isolation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan. It is learned that the group held a sit-in protest upon prevention. It is learned that the police prevented journalists from recording the protest.

(04/087) Detained Person in Diyarbakır…

On April 7, 2021, 1 person (Halil Ercan) is detained in a house raid in Bismil district of Diyarbakır. The reason of detention is unknown.

(04/088) Lawyers on Trial in Istanbul…

On September 15, 2020, Penal Department No 16 of the Court of Cassation has approved the verdict of Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 37 for 17 lawyers, all members of Progressive Lawyers’ Association (ÇHD) and Peoples’ Law Office (HHB); and reversed the verdicts against 2 lawyers (ÇHD chair Selçuk Kozağaçlı and HHB member Barkın Timtik). The court has ruled consolidation of the case against 2 lawyers with another case on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 18. The retrial of the case is held on April 7, 2021.

Selçuk Kozağaçlı and Barkın Timtik attended the trial and made defence declarations. After defence hearings the court decided to continue detention of 2 lawyers and adjourned the trial to September 5, 2021.

Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 37 has sentenced Ayşegül Çağatay, Yağmur Ereren, Didem Baydar Ünsal, Yaprak Türkmen to 3 years and 9 months each and Ahmet Mandacı and Zehra Özdemir to 3 years 1 month and 15 days each, on the charge of ‘knowingly and willingly aiding an illegal organisation’. The local court has separated the cases against Oya Aslan and Günay Dağ; and sentenced Özgür Yılmaz and Ebru Timtik to 13 years and 6 months each; Behiç Aşçı and Şükriye Erden to 12 years each; Engin Gökoğlu, Aytaç Ünsal and Süleyman Gökten to 10 years and 6 months each; Aycan Çiçek and Naciye Demir to 9 years each for ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

Lawyers from ÇHD and HHB were detained on November 8, 2017 and were arrested on November 13, 2017. The court has released 17 lawyers on September 14, 2018 however, they were arrested again upon prosecutor’s appeal on September 16 and 17, 2018.

(04/089) Co-Mayor on Trial in Kars…

The final trial of the case against Şevin Alaca, suspended Kars city co-mayor, is held at Kars Heavy Penal Court No 2 on April 7, 2021.

The court sentenced Şevin Alaca to 6 years and 10 months and 15 days on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and decided to release her upon verdict.

Şevin Alaca was detained on October 1, 2020 and was arrested by the court on October 8, 2020. The Ministry of Interior has appointed a trustee to Kars on October 2, 2020.

(04/090) Co-Mayor and Other People on Trial in Erzurum…

The trial of the case against 9 people (7 of them are arrested) including Burhanettin Şahin, HDP co-mayor of Karayazı district of Erzurum who was suspended and replaced by a trustee, is held at Erzurum Heavy Penal Court No 2 on April 7, 2021.

After defence hearings the court decided to continue detention of 5 people including Burhanettin Şahin until the next trial which is adjourned to June 23, 2021.

Burhanettin Şahin was detained on August 31, 2020 and was arrested on September 3, 2020.

(04/091) HDP Executive on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The final trial of the case against HDP Party Assembly member Halide Türkoğlu, on the grounds of her membership in Kurdish Language Studies and Development Association (KURDÎ-DER) which was closed down by a state of emergency decree and in Free Women’s Congress (KJA), is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 9 on April 7, 2021.

The court sentenced Halide Türkoğlu to 6 years and 3 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

(04/092) HDP Members and Executives on Trial in Kars…

The trial of the case against HDP Kars provincial co-chair Cengiz Anlı and HDP members İzzet Altığ, Mustafa Yardımcıel, Reis Baykız and Kaya Naki is held at Kars Heavy Penal Court No 2 on April 7, 2021.

After defence hearings the court released 5 people and adjourned the trial to June 10, 2021.

(04/093) DBP Employee on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The final trial of the case against İsmail Bardakçı, an employee of press committee of Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Diyarbakır office, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 11 on April 7, 2021.

The court sentenced İsmail Bardakçı to 6 years and 3 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

(11/094) Priest on Trial in Mardin…

The final trial of the case against Assyrian Priest Sefer Bileçen is held at Mardin Heavy Penal Court No 4 on April 7, 2021.

The court sentenced Sefer Bileçen to 2 years and 1 month on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

Sefer Bileçen was detained on January 9, 2020 and was arrested by the court on January 10, 2020. He was released on judicial control conditions upon his lawyer’s objection on January 14, 2020.

(04/095) Diyarbakır JITEM / Musa Anter Case…

The consolidated case on Musa Anter’s killing in Diyarbakır in 1992 and activities of JITEM (Gendarmerie Intelligence and Anti-Terror Unit) in Diyarbakır is held on April 7, 2021 at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 6. The case known as “JITEM Main Case” on Diyarbakır Penal Court No 1 and the case of Musa Anter’s killing has been consolidated by the Supreme Court’s decision on January 29, 2016.

The court adjourned the trial to July 7, 2021.

(04/096) Penalty Fine Imposed for Distributing Leaflets in Eskişehir…

It is learned from the news coverage of April 7, 2021 that, 3 members of HDP are imposed a penalty fine of 39,711 Turkish Liras for violating the Law of Misdemeanour by distributing leaflets before the Newroz celebration in Eskişehir on March 21, 2021.

(04/097) Proceedings Against Parliamentary Members…

It is learned that 14 proceedings demanding lift of impunity of 11 parliamentary members are submitted to Grand National Assembly on April 7, 2021.

Parliamentary members subjected to proceedings are:

  • HDP group deputy chair and Istanbul MP Hakkı Saruhan Oluç
  • HDP Van MP Sezai Temelli (2 proceedings)
  • HDP Diyarbakır MP Semra Güzel (2 proceedings)
  • HDP Van MP Muazzez Orhan Işık
  • HDP Diyarbakır MP Dersim Dağ
  • HDP Batman MP Ayşe Acar Başaran
  • HDP Diyarbakır MP Remziye Tosun (2 proceedings)
  • HDP Iğdır MP Habip Eksik
  • HDP Muş MP Gülüstan Kılıç Koçyiğit
  • HDP Urfa MP Nimetullah Erdoğmuş.

(04/098) Ban of Events in Iskenderun…

Iskenderun Sub-governorate made a declaration on April 7, 2021 and banned all events in the district such as meetings and demonstrations, press declarations, open-door and indoor meetings, protests, concerts, festivals, assemblies, opening tents and stands, sit-in protests, hunger strikes, commemorations, hanging banners and posters, distributing leaflets, collecting petitions, carrying torches, conferences, panel discussions and so on for 7 days as of April 8, 2021.

(04/099) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The final trial of the case against 497 people for the incidents at Presidential Guard Regiment during the coup attempt on July 15, 2016; is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 19 on April 7, 2021. The court sentenced 6 people to heavy life imprisonment, 32 people to life imprisonment, and 106 people to jail penalties from 6 years 3 months to 15 years and 8 months. The court acquitted 354 people.

(04/100) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 276 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 2,203 new Covid-19 ill patients were diagnosed on April 7, 2021. It is also declared that the daily number of Covid-19 case is 54,740.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 32,943 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 3,633,925 as of April 7, 2021.

On April 7, 2021, a health worker (Mehmet Duman) in Izmir lost his life from Covid-19.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 7, 2021 that a prisoner who was diagnosed with Covid-19 in Afyon Bolvadin T Type Prison was taken under treatment at intensive care unit of Afyon Public Hospital.
