(07/065) Operations and Attacks…

The Ministry of National Defence announced that 2 soldiers (Hasan Taş and Furkan Günergök) who were injured in a clash during the “Claw-Lightning” military operation of the Turkish Armed Forces in the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government, died in hospital on July 9, 2023.

It is learned that an ill prisoner named Bişar Yazıcı (52) who was kept in Van High Security Prison, died in Diyarbakır Dicle University Hospital on July 8, 2023.

(07/067) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 7, 2023 that, in Diyarbakır Women’s Prison, the prisoners’ personal belongings were scattered around and some were seized during ward searches, prisoners were prevented from cultural, social and sports rights, prisoners were forced to strip search at the entrance and those who reject it were subjected to physical violence.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 7, 2023 that, in Diyarbakır High Security Prison No. 1 the prisoners were not given Yeni Yaşam and Evrensel newspapers, the food given to them was inadequate and insanitary, the prices at the prison commissary were high, and Kurdish books and magazines and some other books sent to prisoners which were not banned were not given to them.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 7, 2023 that, the prisoners transferred to Diyarbakır High Security Prison No. 2 from other prisons were forced to strip search at the entrance, the wards were overcrowded and the food given to prisoners was inadequate and insanitary.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 7, 2023 that, in Diyarbakır T Type Prison No. 3 the prices at the prison commissary were high, the petitions of prisoners regarding right violations were not answered and the prisoners were forced to take off their shoes during ward searches.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 7, 2023 that, in Diyarbakır Women’s Prison there were not enough health professionals, the prisoners were forced to be in handcuffs during medical examinations and the prisoners who were taken to hospital were forced to be in double handcuffs.

It is learned that the appeal made on July 8, 2023 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.

(07/070) People Subjected to Physical Violence of Village Guards in Diyarbakır…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 10, 2023 that, 3 shepherds (Z. B., H. B. and İ. B.) were subjected to physical violence of the village guards in the rural areas of Kulp district of Diyarbakır.

(07/071) Threatened Journalists in Muğla…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 9, 2023 that, journalists reporting on a fire in Bodrum district of Muğla were threatened by a civilian saying “Delete the images, or I will shoot you at the feet. I will find you”.

(07/072) Interventions Against Pride Month Events…

The police intervened in the 2nd Adana Pride March and detained 18 people including the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Adana provincial co-chair Helin Kaya and lawyers Zelal Demiray, Umay Büyükdağ and Baran Taygun Metin by using physical violence. It is learned that the Greens and Left Future Party (YSP) Mersin MP Perihan Koca was subjected to physical violence of the police who wanted to detain her too. Detained people were released after statement procedures on the same day.

The police intervened in the LGBTI+ Pride March in Eskişehir on July 9, 2023 and detained 18 people by using physical violence.

The police prevented the 9th LGBTI+ Pride March in Antalya on July 9, 2023. It is learned that a press declaration was held at the Education and Science Workers’ Union office upon prevention.

(07/073) Police Intervention to Press Declaration in Istanbul…

The police intervened in the press declaration of Saturday Mothers/People held at the Galatasaray Square of Beyoğlu district of Istanbul on July 8, 2023, and detained 30 people including the HRFT executive board member Ümit Biçer and the Human Rights Association (HRA) chair Eren Keskin by using physical violence and handcuffing them behind their backs. It is learned that the police prevented journalists from recording the intervention, forced them away and journalists Fatoş Erdoğan, Dilan Şimşek and Umut Taştan were subjected to physical violence of the police. It is reported that lawyer Murat Çelik was injured by the physical violence of the police. Detained people were released after statement procedures on the same day. Detained people were: Hanife Yıldız, İkbal Eren, Mikail Kırbayır, Maside Ocak, Besna Tosun, Hasan Karakoç, Ali Tosun, Eren Keskin, Leman Yurtsever, Cüneyt Yılmaz, Oya Ersoy, Gülendam Özdemir, Nimet Tanrıkulu, Ümit Biçer, Hayrettin Pişkin, Ezgi Çetin, Şifa Nur Çetin, Ömer Kavran, Nazım Dikbaş, Taylan Bekin, İsmail Yücel, Aslı Takanay, Deniz Aytaç, Hüseyin Aygül, Hatice Onaran, Murat Çelik, Seyid Doğan, Hünkar Yurtsever, Pelin Laçın, Aydın Aydoğan.

(07/074) Police Intervention to Protest in Urfa…

The police used water cannons and pepper spray to intervene in the people protesting power cuts in Viranşehir district of Urfa on July 9, 2023 and detained 20 people using physical violence.

(07/075) The Case Against Saturday Mothers/People in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 46 people including Saturday Mothers/People and right defenders who were detained in the police intervention against 700th week of Saturday Mothers/ People protests, which was to be held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 21 on July 7, 2023 is adjourned to a further date as the judge was on leave. The indictment demands sentence for 46 people on the charge of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations’.

(07/076) The Case About the Attack to Cemevi in Ankara…

The final trial of the case against 3 people for the attack against a Cemevi and 2 Alevi institutions in Ankara on July 30, 2022 is held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No. 15 on July 7, 2023. The court acquitted 2 defendants, and sentenced A. O.K. to 6 years and 1 months on the charge of ‘attack on the place of worship’ and ‘injury’ and decided to release the defendant.

(07/077) Cancelled Concert in Balıkesir…

It is learned that Hande Yener’s concert in Burhaniye district of Balıkesir as part of the Aromatherapy Festival on July 9, 2023 has been cancelled by the Justice and Development Party (AKP) Metropolitan Municipality. The concert was targeted by discriminatory and phobic attacks stating the following: “Our state holds a position against homosexuality. Our President also made statements about this. It saddens us that an AK Party municipality is leading such an activity and that an artist who openly supports homosexuality is invited. We want this concert to be cancelled.”

(07/078) Ban of Events in Adana…

Adana Governorate’s Office made a declaration on July 7, 2023 and announced that open door and indoor meetings, marches, press declarations, hunger strikes, sit-in protests, opening stands and tents, distributing leaflets, hanging banners and so on are banned for 3 days as of July 8, 2023.
