(09/052) Male Violence Monitoring Report…

According to “Male Violence Monitoring Report” of Bianet published on September 7, 2022, at least 31 women and 7 children got killed by men in August 2022. It is also reported that at least 6 women were forced to sex work, 79 women were subjected to violence, 13 women were sexually harassed and 12 children were abused by men in August 2022.

It is learned from the news coverage of September 7, 2022 that, 2 militants died in a clash between Turkish Armed Forces and HPG militants in Qandil area of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on June 21, 2022.

(09/054) Person Injured by Armoured Vehicle Hit in Mardin…

It is learned that a person named Nazmiye Nazlı Özdemir was injured as a result of the collision of an armoured military vehicle with another vehicle at a checkpoint in Artuklu district of Mardin on September 7, 2022, and was taken to Kızıltepe Public Hospital.

It is learned from the news coverage of September 6, 2022 that Emel Hacıoğlu, a prisoner in Diyarbakır Women’s Prison lost her life at Gazi Yaşargil Research and Training Hospital where she was taken after an asthma attack.

It is learned from the news coverage of September 5, 2022 that, the prisoners in Diyarbakır High Security Prison No. 2 were not given Yeni Yaşam, BirGün and Evrensel newspapers.

(09/057) Hunger Strike in Prison…

It is learned that Gökhan Yıldırım, who is on hunger strike in Tekirdağ F Type Prison No. 1 since December 25, 2021 to demand a fair trial, and was being kept at Tekirdağ Public Hospital since August 10, 2022; was released from hospital and suspended the hunger strike as of September 6, 2022 following the postponement of execution on September 5, 2022.

(09/058) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened the press declaration of workers demanding their rights at the Finance Center in Ataşehir district of Istanbul, held in front of Emlak Konut Real Estate Investment on September 6, 2022; and detained 15 people including the Construction Workers’ Union (Inşaat-Iş) representatives Yunus Özgür and Deniz Gider and the Revolutionary Construction Workers’ Union (Dev Yapı-İş) general secretary Nihat Demir, by using physical violence. It is learned that the police prevented journalists from recording the intervention.

The police intervened the press declaration which was made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on September 6, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

(09/060) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police used physical violence to intervene in the vigil of ETF Textile factory workers in Istanbul on September 7, 2022. It is learned that 1 person was injured in the intervention.

(09/061) Arrested HDP Member in Istanbul…

Hüsamettin Tanrıkulu, a former member of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Youth Assembly who was detained in Istanbul on September 3, 2022, is arrested by the court on September 6, 2022.

(09/062) The Case Against Former HDP MP…

The trial of the case against HDP Hakkari MP and the Democratic Society Congress (DTK) Co-chair Leyla Güven, who has been stripped of MP status, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 9 on September 7, 2022.

Leyla Güven joined the trial via sound and vision system from prison. The prosecutor declared legal opinion and demanded 43 years 1 month and 15 days of jail sentence for Leyla Güven on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ in her social media posts and in the speeches she made. The court adjourned the trial to October 17, 2022.

(09/063) Lawyers on Trial in Istanbul…

On September 15, 2020, Penal Department No 16 of the Court of Cassation has approved the verdict of Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 37 for 17 lawyers, all members of Progressive Lawyers’ Association (ÇHD) and Peoples’ Law Office (HHB); and reversed the verdicts against 2 lawyers (ÇHD chair Selçuk Kozağaçlı and HHB member Barkın Timtik). The court has ruled consolidation of the case against 2 lawyers with another case on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 18. The retrial of the case is held on September 7, 2022.

After defence hearings the court decided to continue detention of 3 lawyers (Selçuk Kozağaçlı, Barkın Timtik and Oya Aslan) and adjourned the trial to November 7, 2022.

Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 37 has sentenced Ayşegül Çağatay, Yağmur Ereren, Didem Baydar Ünsal, Yaprak Türkmen to 3 years and 9 months each and Ahmet Mandacı and Zehra Özdemir to 3 years 1 month and 15 days each, on the charge of ‘knowingly and willingly aiding an illegal organisation’. The local court has separated the cases against Oya Aslan and Günay Dağ; and sentenced Özgür Yılmaz and Ebru Timtik to 13 years and 6 months each; Behiç Aşçı and Şükriye Erden to 12 years each; Engin Gökoğlu, Aytaç Ünsal and Süleyman Gökten to 10 years and 6 months each; Aycan Çiçek and Naciye Demir to 9 years each for ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The Court of Cassation has approved the local court’s verdicts except for 3 lawyers (Barkın Timtik, Selçuk Kozağaçlı and Ezgi Çakır).

Lawyers from the ÇHD and HHB were detained on November 8, 2017 and were arrested on November 13, 2017. The court has released 17 lawyers on September 14, 2018 however, 6 of them (Selçuk Kozağaçlı, Ahmet Mandacı, Aytaç Ünsal, Aycan Çiçek, Engin Gökoğlu and Behiç Aşçı) were arrested again upon prosecutor’s appeal on September 16 and 17, 2018. Oya Aslan was arrested on December 27, 2019.

(09/064) Journalist on Trial in Ağrı…

The trial of the case against journalist Abdullah Kaya, a reporter of Dicle News Agency which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, is held at Ağrı Heavy Penal Court No. 2 on September 6, 2022. The indictment demands sentence for Abdullah Kaya on the charges of ‘knowingly and willingly aiding an illegal organisation without being a member’ and ‘making successive propaganda for an illegal organisation’. The court adjourned the trial to November 15, 2022.

(09/065) People on Trial in Urfa…

The first trial of the case against 20 people who have been detained in the police intervention to the march held in Urfa on March 5, 2017, as part of 8 March Women’s Day events; is held at Urfa Penal Court of First Instance No. 2 on September 6, 2022. 20 people are charged with ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations’ and 2 of them are also charged with ‘publicly insulting a public official due to their duty’. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to February 16, 2023.

(09/066) Investigation Against Journalist in Van…

It is learned that Van Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation against journalist Oktay Candemir over the news report about the rally of the President in Van, and that Oktay Candemir made his official statement to the Provincial Directorate of Security on September 6, 2022.

(09/067) Helin Hasret Şen Case…

The trial of the case against police officer A. E., for death of Helin Hasret Şen, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 1 on September 6, 2022. Helin Hasret Şen, a 12-year-old child, had lost her life due to fire opened from an armoured police vehicle on October 12, 2015, during curfew in Sur district of Diyarbakır. The court rejected to arrest the defendant police officer and adjourned the trial to December 15, 2022.

(09/068) “Unidentified” Decision on Torture and Ill-Treatment Allegations in Adana…

It is learned from the news coverage of September 6, 2022, that the investigation of Adana Seyhan Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office regarding the incident where Hüseyin Selçuk, whose mobile phone was stolen during a concert in Adana in 2021, was subjected to physical violence by police officers and his leg was broken 3 times, has resulted in “unidentified case” on the grounds that the perpetrators could not be identified.

(09/069) Investigation Against Police Officer in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of September 7, 2022 that, an investigation is launched against Istanbul Provincial Security Directorate Security Branch chief Hanifi Zengin, following the criminal complaint of LGBTI+s who were subjected to torture and other ill-treatment by the police during the Pride Parade in 2022.

(09/070) Police Raid to Magazine Office in Istanbul…

It is learned that the police raided the office of Halk Okulu magazine in Istanbul on September 6, 2022 and detained 3 people in the office (Yılmaz Viraner, Oktay Kelebek, Filiz Bap).

(09/071) Dismissed Chamber Head…

It is learned from the news coverage of September 6, 2022 that, The Ministry of Interior High Disciplinary Committee has dismissed Tezcan Karakuş Candan, the head of the Ankara branch of the Chamber of Architects, from her post at Çankaya Municipality.
