7 October 2021 Daily Human Rights Report

(10/061) Labour Killings…

On October 6, 2021, the Worker Health and Worker Safety Council (ISIG) revealed that at least 175 workers including 18 women, 5 children and 5 migrants died while working in September 2021. It is stated in the report that at least 1674 workers lost their lives in the first nine months of 2021, and 53 workers lost their lives from Covid-19 in September 2021.

(10/062) Male Violence Monitoring Report…

According to “Male Violence Monitoring Report” of Bianet published on October 6, 2021, at least 26 women and 4 children got killed by men in September 2021. It is also reported that 5 women were raped, at least 78 women were forced to sex work, 65 women were subjected to violence, 13 children were abused by men in September, 2021.

(10/063) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of October 6, 2021 that, Garibe Gezer, a prisoner kept in Kocaeli Kandıra F Type Prison No 1 was subjected to torture, ill-treatment and sexual assault. It is also stated in the news reports that Garibe Gezer attempted suicide. Eren Keskin, lawyer of Garibe Gezer, states the following in the petition submitted to the prison prosecutor: “Garibe Gezer was transferred from Kayseri Penal Institution to Kandıra Penal Institution on March 15. She was kept in a solitary cell for 22 days. After finishing the solitary confinement penalty, she demanded to be put in a ward for 3 prisoners (…) On May 21, 2021, she rejected as she was going to be put in a solitary cell once again; and female correction officers holding her arms and pulling her hair, have dragged her on the ground. They took off her salwar and put her in the solitary cell, after dragging her half-naked, in places where male correction officers were. She was kept in the cell for 2 days. She protested it, but this time the correction officers came into the cell for she was banging the door, and they beat her again. On May 24, 2021, 8 correction officers came to the cell and beat her. While female correction officers where twisting her hands, male officers were stepping on her throat. Then took her to the cell which is known as padded cell. The correction officers, searched her body by lifting her clothes, and she was subjected to a sexual assault at that moment. As she was trying to remove the pads on the walls of the cell, the correction officers came once again and beat her severely. She fainted, they handcuffed her behind her back and kept her in the padded cell like this for 3 or 4 hours. Since she could not cope with the sexual assault trauma, she tried to kill herself the same night, hanging herself with the sheets. The sheets broke off and she hit her head to the ground as she fell. Although she had a bleeding, she was not intervened for 1-2 hours, and was kept on the ground (…) Still suffering from the sexual torture and ill-treatment, she burned the cell on June 7, and then she was put in the padded cell again. (…) She defines the padded cell as a two or three square meters’ room, covered with leather, kept under surveillance for 24 hours with cameras, the ground was covered with faeces and the smell of it with the urine was so bad to bear, and there was just a hole in the room, which could be seen by the cameras, to be used as a toilet.”

(10/064) Racist Attack in Konya…

It is learned that 2 people are arrested on October 6, 2021, through the investigation about the racist attack in Meram district of Konya on July 30, 2021 which killed 7 members of Dedeoğulları family.

(10/065) Abducted People in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of October 6, 2021 that, 2 people (Savaş Yavuz and Barış Yavuz) were abducted by persons who present themselves as police officers, were subjected to torture and ill-treatment and they were forced to be police informants.

Barış Yavuz stated the following at the press declaration in the Human Rights Association (IHD) office: “They told us that they were police officers when they took us to a remote place. They started to ask questions (…) They started to threaten us, they forced us to be police informants, asked what we know, who we have contact with. We were subjected to police violence for an hour. They insulted and threatened us.”

Savaş Yavuz stated the following: “My brother came to meet me after work, the police stopped us. They interrogated us in the car. They asked questions about our family and father. When we said that we knew nothing, they said ‘You will learn something and come to inform us. Or we will come and get you again’ as a threat.”

(10/066) Journalist Subjected to Police Violence in Istanbul…

It is learned that journalist Fatoş Erdoğan was subjected to physical violence of the police while she was following the protest in Boğaziçi University on October 5, 2021.

(10/067) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

On October 5, 2021, 10 people were detained on the grounds of participating in the protest against Naci İnci on October 4, 2021, who was appointed as the rector of Boğaziçi University by the President. 2 of them (Enis Berke Gök and Caner Perit Özen) are arrested by the court on the charges of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations’ and ‘damage to public property’. 8 people are released provided that 5 of them will be on judicial control conditions.

It is learned that the students were detained upon Naci İnci’s criminal complaint.

(10/068) Detained People in Ankara…

On October 6, 2021, 3 members of the Revolutionary Anarchist Federation, who were writing on the walls, about the October 10 Massacre, are detained in Çankaya district of Ankara. 3 people are released after statement procedures at the prosecutor’s office.

(10/069) Detained People in Diyarbakır…

On October 6, 2021, 13 people are detained in house raids in Silvan district of Diyarbakır on the grounds of “planning a demonstration on the anniversary of Kobanê protests on October 6-8”.

(10/070) Detained People in Şırnak…

On October 6, 2021, 3 people are detained in house raids in Cizre district of Şırnak.

(10/071) Detained People in Diyarbakır…

It is learned that writer Serhat Polatsoy was stopped by the gendarmerie at a control point as he was driving on Diyarbakır-Urfa road on October 6, 2021, and that he was detained on a warrant.

(10/072) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against Can Dündar, former executive editor of Cumhuriyet newspaper for publishing the footage of MIT (National Intelligence Service) trucks stopped in Adana and Hatay on January 19, 2014, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 14 on October 6, 2021.

The indictment demands sentence for Can Dündar on the charges of ‘disclosure of information that, due to its nature, must be kept confidential for reasons relating to the security of the state for the purpose of political or military espionage’ and ‘aiding an illegal organisation without being a member of it’.

The court accepted intervention demand of the President and adjourned the trial to December 29, 2021.

(10/073) Co-Mayor on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The final trial of the case against Nevriye Çur, co-mayor of Yenişehir district, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 10 on October 6, 2021.

After defence hearings the court sentenced Nevriye Çur to 6 years and 3 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

(10/074) HDP Members and Executives on Trial in Hakkari…

The first trial of the case against the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) central district co-chair Sinem Seven, Hakkari Women’s Assembly spokesperson Zeynep Kaya, Şemdinli district co-chair Sozdar Atil and former provincial co-chair Şipan Turan, is held at Hakkari Heavy Penal Court No 3 on October 6, 2021. The case was opened for they participated in the protests against specialised sergeant Musa Orhan, who is charged with sexual assault to a child.

The indictment demands sentence for 4 people on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

The court acquitted 4 people.

(10/075) Association Chair on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The first trial of the case against Yüksel Almas, co-chair of MEBYA-DER (Association of People Lost Their Relatives in the Cradle of Civilizations), is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 9 on October 6, 2021.

The indictment demands sentence for Yüksel Almas on the charges of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

Yüksel Almas joined the trial from prison via sound and vision system. The court decided to continue detention of Yüksel Almas and adjourned the trial to December 13, 2021.

Yüksel Almas was detained on February 27, 2021 and was arrested on March 9, 2021.

(10/076) Association Executive on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The first trial of the case against Halime Topus, executive of MEBYA-DER, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 11 on October 6, 2021.

The indictment demands sentence for Halime Topus on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. After defence hearings the court acquitted Halime Topus.

(10/077) Investigation Against a Person in Urfa for ‘Insulting the President’…

It is learned that Urfa Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against Ferit Şenyaşar, on the grounds of “insulting the President” in a declaration he made. Ferit Şenyaşar made his official statement through the investigation on October 6, 2021. Ferit Şenyaşar and his mother are having “justice watch” in Urfa, as his father and two brothers were killed after the quarrel with İbrahim Halil Yıldız, the Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) parliamentary candidate back then and his personal guards, in Suruç district of Urfa on June 14, 2021.

On October 6, 2021, 3 people are detained in Ankara.

(10/079) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 236 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 30,438 as of October 6, 2021.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 65,799 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 7,288,840 as of October 6, 2021.
