(11/061) Refugee Loses His Life…
According to news reports on November 4, 2025, it was learned that Micheal Adufu, a Ghanaian citizen, was arrested on May 7, 2025, at the hospital where he was being treated, on the grounds that he had damaged medical equipment, despite being unconscious, and was detained by the magistrate’s court to which he was referred. Michael Adufu, who was transferred back to the hospital without being admitted to prison due to his health condition, was reported to have died on May 23, 2025, at the hospital where he was receiving treatment. The news also stated that Micheal Adufu was released on May 14, 2025.
Ceren Şen Tosun, a member of the Izmir Bar Association’s Executive Board, made the following statement on the matter: “On May 5, we saw that Adufu received medical support for two days. Then, on May 7, a complaint was filed against Adufu for ‘damaging property’. Adufu was taken to the police station that same day and then to the courthouse on May 8. Our lawyer, who went as a defense attorney from the Bar Association, stated that he saw Adufu unable to walk, sitting on a wheeled office chair inside a garbage bag, and told the authorities that it was impossible to take a statement in this manner. Although the lawyer requested that Adufu be urgently transferred to a hospital, the Public Prosecutor’s Office rejected this request, and the individual was sent to the Justice of the Peace Criminal Court with a detention order. Adufu, who was brought before the magistrate wrapped in a black garbage bag, was unable to answer any questions. More accurately, he could not even sit up because he had completely lost the ability to walk (…). Two lawyers saw Adufu in the courthouse corridors inside a garbage bag (…) and intervened. This situation is ignored by law enforcement officers, and Adufu is transported in a black garbage bag. After this situation came to the attention of our bar association, we took an interest in the matter and went to Şakran Closed Prison to meet with Adufu. However, we learned that when Adufu was brought to the prison (…), he was unconscious and was immediately transported to the city hospital by ambulance. According to the information we received from the city hospital, the person arrived at the city hospital unconscious. He remained in intensive care for 20 days and died there without regaining consciousness.”
The Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office announced on November 6, 2025, that an investigation into the matter had been launched.
